I gave up warning others about Mr. Hillbilly Elegy a long time ago.

IDK why, but I just keep thinking of poor Brooke English on AMC.  During her many years on that show, she endured both an abortion after being raped by vile Eddie Dorrance and an ectopic pregnancy (during her brief marriage to Tad Martin) that also resulted in terminating the pregnancy after it nearly killed her.  I can't help but think tonight of all the Brookes who've had to face even one of those traumas, never mind both.  Imagine how much more difficult their situations might have been, had they lived in a country or at a time when they were denied their right to safe and, in many cases, life-saving abortions.

I tried to read his book and I could not get through it. Being lower middle class and seeing poorer people as the enemy is so obnoxious to me.

JD  Vance is one of the most repulsive figures I've ever seen  in  politics - not only is he the epitome of swarthiness and looks like he will keel over at any moment, every word out of his mouth is  clearly a lie, amped up for extremist backers. The Trump endorsement and weak primary competition meant he had an easy path, but even then he struggled to put it away. And he wears more mascara than a drag queen.

Chinless wonders like this triumph because the GOP always sticks together, while the Democratic Party has the lieks of Joe Manchin, who tanked any real chance we had this year. Here is Rob Portman, cheering on the man who will probably put his son in a camp:

Speaking of which:

You must be joking!! He can't have said that! Ugh, I feel physically sick. That is one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard.

His daughters had,  in 2020, begged voters not to support him. I guess at least someone listened...for once...

@Ponds Thank you for posting that. I know it must have been very hard. 😥

@DRW50 posted that link showing "next, Brown v Board" and my stomach flipped upside down. 'Fascism in its legal phase' was how I saw it characterized somewhere a few months back. Codifying the pecking order where *some people* have more rights than others -- and over others. At this point a semi-automatic will have more rights than a black, gay, and/or female body.

What a rotted, rubberstamp 'institution' the SC now is. I am furious (at myself mostly, and scared) that we took our eye off the ball and didn't try to think outside the box how we could possibly counter this clearly-telegraphed assault on our constitutional rights.

The fact that someone feels entirely comfortable spouting such evil is chilling.  Hell, he was bragging about taking away children's rights to an equal education.  Shameless bastards.

I don't know if you ever saw this but your comment reminded me of it. One of the few pieces of political comedy I have enjoyed in a number of years.

I hope I didn’t miss it, but I would love to hear the rundown on the results of the race between Shontel Brown and Nina Turner from @marceline.

You haven't. I'd be interested too. There's been a lot of push today by Nina's media allies to push her as the oppressed victim of the system, but this was a blowout. Nina is apparently going to grift for President in 2024 rather than try again.

There are definitely some people I know elsewhere with convenient amnesia about Turner. I laid it on pretty thick when she got stomped.
