Y&R: Hinsey vs. Latham

"I find it strange that... Young and Restless...[is] basically handing over the 1 pm time slot to Days of Our Lives just as Hogan Sheffer istaking over.

Instead of bringing their A games with their A starts, we're getting snotty teens and reliquaries and...couples without an ounce of chemistry (...Y&R's Kevin and Jana...). Worse yet, those shows are trashing their heroines just when DAYS is shoring up theirs...

And don't even get me started on Y&R, where typing and pouring coffeeand murdering day players is being passed off as a storyline while heavyweights Nikki, Victor, Ashley and Phyllis sit idle. That birthday tape Noah made for Nick featurning former enemies Jack and Victor cavorting in party hats with Zapato the dog almost undid me. why would you deball the most powerful men on your show for the sake of a 30-second clip in a kid's movie?"

Looks like not everyone agrees on Latham's great work. I know, we've already discussed it. ;)

What article or column is this from?

Ahem, I've made numerous criticism on LML my own but is anyone irked that Hinsey fails to make her point? I mean those examples aren't real arguments on whether or not the writing is actually good - or is it?

As for couples without an ounze of chemstry: As long as there are Nick&Phyllis noone comes even close them to them. And she critizes that Nikki has no persona - HUH, this role has definitely gained shape since last year. As for Phyllis - see my comment above but I guess it would be too bold to writer such thing in a butt-kisser magazine. Hinsey could have made much more valid points - so this is bland and pointless...

Hinsey picks her favorites and doesn't give others a shot. I'd guess that Y&R is on her hit list right now. We've all said it isn't perfect, but she acts like it's Passions.

Keep in mind this is the same woman who said GH deserved to win Best Drama at the Emmys even though the year sucked.

I agree Y&R isn't as awful as she's making it out to be. Think of a year ago, when the Sheila storyline was creeping at a snail's pace, and somehow featured every day. No, it's not perfect. Yes, nobody cares about reliquaries. But there's still some stuff worth watching over there. I'm enjoying this Winters family storyline very much, love the Victor/Jack stuff, and am excited for what's brewing between Jill & Katherine. It could be better (and has been) but it's certainly not awful.

I have to say that I agree with Hinsey. I will take Sheila's recent story flop over Carmen's murder anyday.

I also have to say that I'm growing very annoyed with any scene that has Devon in it. TYPING, that's all we freaking hear anymore. I understand what the point is they're trying to make. Devon is deaf and he has to struggle, along with everyone close to him, with his new disability, but my God, can we speed up this storyline and get him the clochea (sp?) surgery already?

And what's up with Devon, Lily and Daniel being the new Scooby Detective Agency of the new millenium? That's not something I find interesting.

And don't even get me started on Prof. Korbell and the whole art crap their shoving down our throats.

Y&R is downgrading in quality so much, IMO. They may still have the numbers on their side, but we'll see how long that lasts with this crap.

Haha so she's jumping on the "Go DAYS" bandwagon now

I disagree about Kevin and Jana. I'm not sure I see any trashing of heroines.

Oh come on. It's filler, and filler has been around for years. She does NOT know what she is talking about here. Victor and Phyllis just had MAJOR storylines. Why can't the Winters be a frontburner family for once, after years of the Newmans dominating. I do agree that MTS and ED need something though. Hook Ashley up with Ji Min, they would be smoking.

BTW Y&R has had that coffeeshop for years Hinsey. Pouring coffee ain't a new thing on this show

This lady's a joke.

"Y&R" has been steadily gaining in the ratings and most people think it's the hottest show

on daytime (which it is).

"DAYS" has improved about 300% and is really good, but their ratings have been weak

the last 4 weeks and their stories are building more than paying off. There's not a lot

happening on there but re-casts, character development and a few twists here and there.

I don't know what this lady's talking about. "Y&R" is the best soap on daytime right now

and CBS as a whole is really getting competitive. Betty White on B&B, crazy acting and

plots on "GUIDING LIGHT", really great ratings for ATWT.

What is she smoking?

I wonder what Brad Bell has planned for B&B's 20th anniversary next year.

  • Member

Isn't B&B going to Australia? Thats great for the Australian fans because I know the show is huge there, along with Y&R and DAYS.

Hinsey can hate all she wants, but CBS is coming alive and the ratings are showing it. I truly find it unbelievable how much the soaps are rising week after week. Imagine if they had the bonus of primetime promotion, they'd be huge! Right now Y&R and B&B are higher rated than anything on the CW and ATWT is up their with their most competitive shows. GL has reached 3 million and many thought it was about to get cancelled.

CBSD is not perfect, but they are really trying, staying fresh and it's paying off. I also give NBC props for what they've done to DAYS, but PSNS still needs to go.

If anyone deserves a lashing, it's ABC, but I can assure you she pimped GH in the same article she's bashing Y&R in.

This woman's favoritism towards ABC sickens me. Out of all the networks that have soaps ABCD is in worst shape than all of them.

I strongly disagree with Hinsey on this one, which is rare because usually I find her to be spot on. I never used to be able to get into Y&R - it was slow, boring and really lacked payoff. Now I love it. It's so much more accessible.

Lately Hinsey has been opening her mouth and inserting her foot. In the latest SOW, Michelle Stafford (Phyllis) let her know how she felt about all the Phyllis trashing she had been doing.

One thing about Y&R/Bill Bell days was that it ALWAYS had a payoff. That and the best social events.

Hinsey could have come up with better arguements;

-Behind the scenes changes

-Jill and Katherine no shows

I have never agreed with her considering her ABC bias at times but she is right on here. She didn't bring up the best points but Y&R is suffering quality-wise. All the teens, Carmen, characters out of character, etc. The show is not horrible but it's boring as hell and it struggles to give solid day to day episodes. The start of Carmen's murder was great but then blah. LML taking full control behind the scenes doesn't help matters either.

The pace is good and fast and I like that and I loved the beginning of her work earlier this year but right now I am just not feeling the show at all. It struggles to hold my interest and it seems many long-term fans are upset as well. Like Drew said, the ratings are good now but they were for GH for a long time even with the mob and all the other crap and, eventually, they fell too even with the gimmicks and returning vets. At some point, if things continue to go this way, Y&R will start to lose ratings. Will it be massive? No but it will be noticeable and with the axing of so many long term writers and so on it is something that is very likely to happen since the newbies do not know the show as well as the old guard.
