  1. JFP's third week and Guiding Light gets its first weekly win over General Hospital since 1984. Y&R this week: Traci learns she is pregnant. CBS entire lineup in the Top 5 😍 This week was Maury Povich show debut. We are now at five years of Oprah, four years of Geraldo, three years of Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. Keep an eye on Santa Barbara and Loving clearances over the fall.
  2. I don't know about anyone else, but to me Knots Landing starting tanking in the aftermath of Val's babies. Empire Valley became a mess and Joshua's descent into madness and eventual death was difficult to watch.
  3. Rage of Angels (1983) and its sequel (1986) were NBC. CBS had Master of the Game (1984), If Tomorrow Comes (1986), Windmills of the Gods (1988), Nothing Lasts Forever (1995). Memories of Midnight (1991) and The Sands of Time (1992) were syndicated. ABC had A Stranger in the Mirror (1993) but it was a movie not a miniseries.
  4. On the male side of the equation there was Sidney Sheldon.
  5. I'm pretty sure Nicolas Coster was on As the World Turns by Summer 1994 so the timing doesn't work. Jed Allan first appeared on 90210 in Spring 1994 so timing also doesn't work there either. I'm thinking JFP's choice might have been either Roscoe Born or Lane Davies.
  6. The Long and Winding Road (season 6 finale) was the only Knots Landing episode that finished at #1.
  7. Not to derail this thread, but I don't deny the impact of The Cosby Show in both television history and popular culture. Perhaps you are right and I was being a bit too harsh.
  8. Of course JFP brought over her friends from Santa Barbara: Justin Deas, Marcy Walker, Marj Dusay. One casting during JFP run I'm curious about is Alan return in Summer 1994. It's surprising that GL cast a virtual unknown actor in such a pivotal role (at least to daytime viewers anyway; I know Ron Raines was a musical theater actor before he was cast on GL) and not a big soap name. Maybe the friend JFP wanted for the part wasn't available or not interested.
  9. Judith Krantz recycled actors in her miniseries. Lindsay Wagner - Scruples, Princess Daisy Barry Bostwick - Scruples, I'll Take Manhattan, Till We Meet Again Stacy Keach - Princess Daisy, Mistral's Daughter Robert Urich - Princess Daisy, Mistral's Daughter
  10. From the annual ratings, there is an increase from 1990/91 to 1991/92. How that's translated on a weekly basis we'll be seeing soon in the 1990s ratings thread.
  11. As we saw in the 1980s ratings thread, GL avoided cancel territory because Capitol showed no growth and B&B wasn't a hit right away. That year from the aftermath of Maureen's death to Nancy Curlee departure was a chore to get through. Not long after that was OJ. GL entered cancel territory in 1995. JFP was gone in May that year.
  12. We'll be seeing All I Want For Christmas is You hit #1 again soon.
  13. Who's the Boss has probably aged the best of the big 1980s family sitcoms. The Cosby Show will never see the light of day again because of what we now know about it. Family Ties embodied Reagan-era ideals the most so its very much a product of its time. Growing Pains hasn't held up well for me because of Kirk Cameron being a religious nut job and Tracey Gold health issues during the show's run.
  14. Think of another classic story that CBS had these connections to: a drama series that was a take on said classic story, and the beloved film version of said classic story that had a much-loved CBS primetime star in the main cast who performed the only version of the theme song that matters as far as I'm concerned.
  15. Of course OJ didn't help matters either. Is it safe to say that GL limped along in its final 15 years, much like its fellow P&G show Another World limped along in its final 20 years. I don't think As the World Turns limped along in its final 15 years.
  16. I loved those big 1980s miniseries based on best-selling novels. It's too bad the broadcast networks don't make miniseries anymore. Lifetime movie adaptations of best-selling novels don't have that same feeling as the network ones BITD.
  17. Y&R dominance will not be threatened until the aftermath of OJ when Reilly's Days blows up.
  18. Another World had been limping along for like 12 or 13 years at this point (the drop off that began Summer 1978 and then being effectively over in 1979 when then-time slot head-to-head General Hospital blew up). Santa Barbara never stood a chance head-to-head with General Hospital. Speculating here but I think Fall 1991 Santa Barbara is going to start losing clearances. There were four big syndicated talk show debuts that fall: Jenny Jones, Maury Povich, Jerry Springer, Montel Williams.
  19. The Wimbledon short week? Funny that Melissa Reeves gets the big splashy wedding the week after her husband debuts on Y&R.
  20. The big 1980s family sitcom moms: Phylicia Rashad, Meredith Baxter, Judith Light, Joanna Kerns.
  21. Lorie was introduced as the vixen daughter of the main upper class family but by the end of her run, would we have considered her more of an anti-heroine?
  22. Wasn't it rumored that GA and VI had beef BITD? Look at the timelines. Both depart in 1985. GA returns 1987 to February 1991. VI returns July 1991 to February 1996. GA returns April 1996.
  23. Y&R June 26, 1991 Scott Reeves debut. Guiding Light July 8, 1991 Alexandra exposes Roger at the country club. This storyline was the last hurrah of the Robert Calhoun era. Guiding Light July 16, 1991 Vincent Irizarry return. This week was the EP change to JFP. I enjoyed Guiding Light during the Robert Calhoun era and it disappoints me that there was a ratings drop during his run as EP. JFP first year at Guiding Light had a ratings increase as shown in the annual ratings but she was coasting off the groundwork laid during the Robert Calhoun era. Days is making a comeback. Has Deidre Hall returned at this point? I know James Reilly becoming HW is about a year and a half away.
  24. 🤯 That whole storyline was like some sort of take on a classic story that's a tale as old as time.
