  1. The combination of Robert Calhoun and Douglas Marland was at its creative peak in 1986 and 1987. No wonder Julianne Moore has always spoken highly of her time on As the World Turns.
  2. Y&R really fighting General Hospital for #1. Another big storyline of early 1987 was Jill launching Jabot Men's Line. Brenda Dickson run is winding down. Jess Walton takes over in June. Capitol ends with 5.6 rating and 93% clearance. Let's see how B&B does in its first week. As the World Turns moves back to 2 pm with the premiere of B&B at 1:30 pm. They'll be away from supercouple Days and All My Children, but will be fully head-to-head with One Life to Live. 6 months of Oprah and among the lowest tier soaps, Search for Tomorrow has ended, Santa Barbara clearance still 97%, Loving clearance still 91%, and Ryan's Hope clearance dropped from 86% to 81%.
  3. Martha Byrne original recipe Lily was As the World Turns version of Y&R Cricket.
  4. Y&R back to #1! February 1987 big storylines were Ashley in the New York psychiatric facility and Nikki illness. @Soapsuds will be happy to see As the World Turns at 3rd. This would have been the England remote leading to Frannie and Sabrina meeting. Julianne Moore A&E Biography showed the Frannie/Sabrina meeting scene. A month away from the end of Capitol and start of B&B. Capitol seems to have gotten a boost with the end being near.
  5. Which Sheila return? Spring 1992, Sheila revealed to have escaped from the fire on Y&R and then moves over to B&B. Fall 1995 Bradley brought Sheila back because B&B was tanking. Then there were B&B returns in 2002, 2003, 2017, and Y&R return in 2005.
  6. January 1987 Y&R big storylines were Ashley emotional breakdown in the aftermath of ending her pregnancy, Jill and Katherine custody battle for Phillip III, Nina attempts to get her baby from Rose DeVille.
  7. Heather's mother is April Stevens.
  8. What to look forward to in 1987: Y&R continuing its climb to #1. End of Capitol and premiere of B&B. CBS new daytime schedule w/ B&B at 1:30 pm and As the World Turns at 2 pm. Supercouple Days transitions from the Bo/Hope years to the Steve/Kayla years.
  9. So 1987 Days had three big cast departures with Deidre Hall, Peter Reckell, and Kristian Alfonso all moving on to prime time. It will be interesting to see the ratings after their departures. The 1987-1990 portion of supercouple Days were the Steve/Kayla years and their wedding got Days to #1.
  10. Million dollar Mamie is now 10 Million dollar Mamie, and I am here for it.
  11. Question for Days fans, was Deidre Hall doing double duty in Fall 1986 with Days and Our House? NBC smartly kept Deidre Hall in the family so to speak.
  12. November 12, 1986 Y&R Ashley tells Victor she ended the pregnancy by him. That scene was chosen by Eileen Davidson as part of the 50th anniversary memorable moments clip set. Y&R #1 half of November. December 5, 1986 Y&R we saw during the classics. Paul finds out he's a centerfold and the start of Ashley emotional breakdown in the aftermath of ending the pregnancy.
  13. Fall 1986 Marland As the World Turns is showing growth. November 7, 1986 was Anthony Herrera return. I think Marland As the World Turns will regularly be in the Top 5 for the rest of 1986 and in 1987, but it's going to be a tough battle w/ All My Children, One Life to Life, supercouple Days in that 3rd-6th tier.
  14. Y&R back to #1! @Soapsuds will be happy to see Marland As the World Turns in the Top 5.
  15. I'd go as far to say that CBS didn't even want Capitol to begin with. Capitol did not do the first job CBS wanted it to do, something more glamorous to compete with ABC, but it served its second job, a placeholder/time filler until Bill Bell had a second show ready. Sometimes I wonder if CBS regretted cancelling Search for Tomorrow. Even if CBS kept Search for Tomorrow, it probably would have ended as soon as Bill Bell had a second show ready.
  16. You're welcome @AbcNbc247 Family Matters was my favorite of the TGIF comedies and I stuck with it right until the end. I also liked Perfect Strangers and the first four seasons of Full House. I watched some of the first season of Step by Step but couldn't really get into it. I lost interest in Full House not long after it moved to Tuesday. Boy Meets World I watched here and there.
  17. September 29, 1986: CBS returned 4 pm ET to affiliates. October 6-10, 1986 Y&R dropped to 4th after killing it in the summer. What happened that week? Did ABC have something big go on? Y&R big changes in the second half of 1986: Cricket is now a full time character and will eat the show for the remainder of the decade. H. Wesley Kenney is on the way out as EP and Ed Scott takes over. One year of Marland As the World Turns and not much growth so far as shown on @beebs comparison of 1985/86 vs. 1984/85. The 3rd-6th tier was a crowded field w/ All My Children, One Life to Live, supercouple Days, Marland As the World Turns. I'm watching clearances of the bottom three to see if there was an Oprah effect. We know Search for Tomorrow is winding down, the last episode is some three months away.
  18. Y&R got 9 consecutive weeks at #1 during Summer 1986. September 8-12, 1986 was first week of Oprah gone national and clearances for the bottom three dropped from the previous week. It'll be interesting to see if there was an Oprah effect in subsequent weeks.
  19. 90210 didn't start until 1990.
  20. Please let there be less garbage time this month.
  21. When watching episodes from the main 1980s/1990s eras, GL feels like a different show each time. Potter/Marland held its own against General Hospital when that show was at it's peak as a pop culture phenomenon. Storylines from that era that impacted GL until the end were Roger's fall off the cliff in Santo Domingo; Alan/Hope marriage; intros of Chamberlain, Lewis, Reardon families. Kobe/Long Spring 1983-Summer 1984 set in motion characters and storylines that would carry GL through its final 25 years (Lewis family expanded and elevated to a main family, Phillip/Beth, Josh/Reva, Alexandra) but it was too much chasing 1980s trends. Willmore/Long had the task of cleaning up the mess from the writer turnover of 1986 through first half of 1987, plus that era was also affected by the 1988 writer's strike. Storylines from that era that impacted GL until the end were intro of the Cooper family and returns of Holly and Roger. Calhoun/Long/Curlee GL thrived despite the ratings not reflecting that. JFP/Curlee July 1991-August 1992 coasted off the groundwork laid in the Calhoun era and the ratings increased that first year but the momentum didn't last. Then came the events of 1993 that changed the show forever and we know the rest.
  22. Eileen Davidson interview from early 1983 where she talks about Y&R popularity in Canada. Marla Adams and Tracey Bregman appearance at 1985 Children's Miracle Network Telethon in Toronto.
  23. Y&R is killing it Summer 1986. Another four weeks at #1, bringing them to 7 consecutive weeks at #1. We are three weeks away from Oprah going national.
  24. Family Matters season 1 was Friday 8:30 pm, the lead out from Full House. Pre-Urkel episodes September 22, 1989: The Mama Who Came to Dinner (series premiere), rating 13.9, 38th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. NBC replaced Baywatch with Back to the Future. November 24, 1989: Stake-Out, rating 11.3, 46th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS replaced Snoops with Ice Stars Review. December 1, 1989: False Arrest, rating 13.9, 33rd for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Snoops. December 8, 1989: The Quilt, rating 14.3, 26th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Snoops. Season 1 Urkel episodes December 15, 1989: Laura's First Date, rating 11.3, 56th for the week. CBS replaced Snoops with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and wins 8-9 pm time slot. January 5, 1990: Man's Best Friend, rating 14.4, 35th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS pulled Snoops from the schedule and new Friday 8 pm show is Max Monroe: Loose Cannon. January 12, 1990: Baker's Dozen, rating 15.5, 32nd for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Max Monroe: Loose Cannon. January 19, 1990: The Big Reunion, rating 16.0 (season high), 21st for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. NBC replaced Baywatch with True Blue. February 2, 1990: The Party, rating 15.3, 24th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS replaced Max Monroe: Loose Cannon with You Don't Look 40, Charlie Brown. February 9, 1990: The Big Fix, rating 13.9, 30th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS pulled Max Monroe: Loose Cannon from the schedule and new Friday 8 pm show is The Bradys. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS cancelled The Bradys after the March 9, 1990 episode and March 16 CBS broadcast Why Charlie Brown? and Bugs Bunny Special. March 23, 1990: The Candidate, rating 14.8, 23rd for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS broadcast NCAA Men's Basketball. April 20, 1990: Bowl Me Over, rating 12.7, 33rd for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS broadcast Dolphins, Whales, and Us. April 27, 1990: Rock Video (season 1 finale), rating 13.2, 30th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. NBC replaced Baywatch with Mancuso FBI. CBS broadcast Candid Camera Special. Pre-Urkel episodes average 13.4. Urkel episodes average 14.1. Overall average 13.7. Family Matters was not in the 1989/90 Top 30. The numbers show a boost with the Urkel episodes but there's also the factors of lead in Full House showing growth (going from below the Top 30 in 1988/89 to 22nd in 1989/90) plus NBC and CBS not offering much competition (Baywatch on NBC was one season and done, and CBS was in the midst of its third place primetime mess era where nothing was really working as far as new shows go).
