Y&R Nikki learns her illness is in remission, but upon seeing Victor and Ashley together at the ranch, Nikki decides to keep the truth about her condition hidden from Victor. Lily's parentage reveal episode was one of the early 2000s holiday classics. GL shows a drop in the annual ratings until 1991/92. It's disappointing to me that GL ratings dropped during the Robert Calhoun years. Remember too that B&B did not have full clearance in its early years, plus it's head-to-head w/ second half of supercouple Days and second half of All My Children. I would think As the World Turns would have improved by not being head-to-head w/ second half of supercouple Days and second half of All My Children. Perhaps being fully head-to-head w/ One Life to Live was giving it tougher competition. I remember reading that somewhere many years ago, that Bill Bell allegedly demanded CBS give B&B the Y&R lead out otherwise he'd take both shows to another network. Same stunt that Mark Goodson allegedly pulled off a year earlier w/ The Price is Right and Card Sharks.

The big departure week on Days as per earlier post in this thread. Deidre Hall, Peter Reckell, Kristian Alfonso all moved on to primetime. There was a drop in the next week ratings. Lets see how long its takes for the second part of supercouple Days (Steve/Kayla years) to take off.

Mamie is the reason the Winters family exists on the show in the first place. She is needed as that family's rightful matriarch.

Looking at GL ratings, Pamela Long cannot return fast enough. GL was in a really bad way ratings-wise from 1986 until the end of the decade yet its amazing that it didn't enter cancel territory in that time. I personally liked the Robert Calhoun era but the ratings didn't reflect the improvement in the show.

Ratings from the 80's
Remember CBS had given up 4 pm ET in September 1986 so the only way CBS could've kept Capitol and premiered B&B is by ending $25,000 Pyramid. CBS would not drop Card Sharks a little over a year into its run or move it away from being the lead in to The Price is Right and risk incurring the wrath of Mark Goodson (it was alleged that Mark Goodson demanded CBS give Card Sharks the lead in to The Price is Right in January 1986 or he would take both shows to another network). A hypothetical CBS schedule March 1987 could have been 10 am Capitol 10:30 am Card Sharks 11 am The Price is Right Noon Local programming 12:30 pm Y&R 1:30 pm B&B 2 pm As the World Turns 3 pm Guiding Light Who knows how long Capitol would have lasted in an early morning slot because clearances would still be an issue. I think you meant to put series premiere for B&B and new time for As the World Turns. That 3rd-6th tier is showing lots of movement w/ supercouple Days, All My Children, One Life to Live, As the World Turns. B&B is in pretty much the same place where Capitol ended.

B&B was head-to-head w/ second half of supercouple Days and second half of All My Children, plus it did not have full clearance, so there's some struggling in the early years. From the annual ratings, B&B first moves past Days in 1990, then Days overtakes B&B in 1996, then B&B moves past Days in 1999. B&B would move past All My Children in 1996.

Capitol was a placeholder/time filler until Bill Bell had a second show ready. CBS even gave B&B the lead out from Y&R, that's how much faith they had in Bill Bell. Remember too that Y&R was on its way to toppling General Hospital for #1.

The combination of Robert Calhoun and Douglas Marland was at its creative peak in 1986 and 1987. No wonder Julianne Moore has always spoken highly of her time on As the World Turns.

Y&R really fighting General Hospital for #1. Another big storyline of early 1987 was Jill launching Jabot Men's Line. Brenda Dickson run is winding down. Jess Walton takes over in June. Capitol ends with 5.6 rating and 93% clearance. Let's see how B&B does in its first week. As the World Turns moves back to 2 pm with the premiere of B&B at 1:30 pm. They'll be away from supercouple Days and All My Children, but will be fully head-to-head with One Life to Live. 6 months of Oprah and among the lowest tier soaps, Search for Tomorrow has ended, Santa Barbara clearance still 97%, Loving clearance still 91%, and Ryan's Hope clearance dropped from 86% to 81%.

Y&R back to #1! February 1987 big storylines were Ashley in the New York psychiatric facility and Nikki illness. @Soapsuds will be happy to see As the World Turns at 3rd. This would have been the England remote leading to Frannie and Sabrina meeting. Julianne Moore A&E Biography showed the Frannie/Sabrina meeting scene. A month away from the end of Capitol and start of B&B. Capitol seems to have gotten a boost with the end being near.

Most successful soap returns
Which Sheila return? Spring 1992, Sheila revealed to have escaped from the fire on Y&R and then moves over to B&B. Fall 1995 Bradley brought Sheila back because B&B was tanking. Then there were B&B returns in 2002, 2003, 2017, and Y&R return in 2005.

What to look forward to in 1987: Y&R continuing its climb to #1. End of Capitol and premiere of B&B. CBS new daytime schedule w/ B&B at 1:30 pm and As the World Turns at 2 pm. Supercouple Days transitions from the Bo/Hope years to the Steve/Kayla years.

So 1987 Days had three big cast departures with Deidre Hall, Peter Reckell, and Kristian Alfonso all moving on to prime time. It will be interesting to see the ratings after their departures. The 1987-1990 portion of supercouple Days were the Steve/Kayla years and their wedding got Days to #1.

Question for Days fans, was Deidre Hall doing double duty in Fall 1986 with Days and Our House? NBC smartly kept Deidre Hall in the family so to speak.

November 12, 1986 Y&R Ashley tells Victor she ended the pregnancy by him. That scene was chosen by Eileen Davidson as part of the 50th anniversary memorable moments clip set. Y&R #1 half of November. December 5, 1986 Y&R we saw during the classics. Paul finds out he's a centerfold and the start of Ashley emotional breakdown in the aftermath of ending the pregnancy.

Fall 1986 Marland As the World Turns is showing growth. November 7, 1986 was Anthony Herrera return. I think Marland As the World Turns will regularly be in the Top 5 for the rest of 1986 and in 1987, but it's going to be a tough battle w/ All My Children, One Life to Life, supercouple Days in that 3rd-6th tier.

I'd go as far to say that CBS didn't even want Capitol to begin with. Capitol did not do the first job CBS wanted it to do, something more glamorous to compete with ABC, but it served its second job, a placeholder/time filler until Bill Bell had a second show ready. Sometimes I wonder if CBS regretted cancelling Search for Tomorrow. Even if CBS kept Search for Tomorrow, it probably would have ended as soon as Bill Bell had a second show ready.

TGIF Memories
You're welcome @AbcNbc247 Family Matters was my favorite of the TGIF comedies and I stuck with it right until the end. I also liked Perfect Strangers and the first four seasons of Full House. I watched some of the first season of Step by Step but couldn't really get into it. I lost interest in Full House not long after it moved to Tuesday. Boy Meets World I watched here and there.

September 29, 1986: CBS returned 4 pm ET to affiliates. October 6-10, 1986 Y&R dropped to 4th after killing it in the summer. What happened that week? Did ABC have something big go on? Y&R big changes in the second half of 1986: Cricket is now a full time character and will eat the show for the remainder of the decade. H. Wesley Kenney is on the way out as EP and Ed Scott takes over. One year of Marland As the World Turns and not much growth so far as shown on @beebs comparison of 1985/86 vs. 1984/85. The 3rd-6th tier was a crowded field w/ All My Children, One Life to Live, supercouple Days, Marland As the World Turns. I'm watching clearances of the bottom three to see if there was an Oprah effect. We know Search for Tomorrow is winding down, the last episode is some three months away.
