Ratings from the 1990s
The article even pointed out they were only hits because they were hammocked between Friends/Seinfeld/ER. Fall 1995 until end of 1999 the only show I'd consider a breakout hit was Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Miami Vice was a repeat on February 7, 1986, episode Buddies. Original broadcast November 1, 1985 had rating 20.6, 11th for the week. 1985/86 Miami Vice new episodes clean swept Falcon Crest.

1995/96, ER reaches #1 and Friends blows up. The rest of the broadcast network primetime lineups that weren't NBC Thursday, not looking so good. Who Lives and Who Dies on TV - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

You're still early in the series. Angela has some good emotional scenes in seasons 3 and 4.

I wonder if Ryan's Hope being ahead of Search for Tomorrow was CBS's motivation for rearranging the soap schedule on June 8, 1981. Ryan's Hope head-to-head w/ the first half of Y&R from June 8, 1981 to October 5, 1984. It will be interesting to see Y&R rise and Ryan's Hope fall during that period.

1980s Olympics Lake Placid winter: February 13-24, 1980 - From this thread, ABC pre-empted One Life to Live and General Hospital on February 13, 1980 for Olympics coverage. Moscow summer: July 19-August 3, 1980 - NBC had the broadcasting rights but the coverage was reduced due to the US boycott. From this thread, NBC did not pre-empt any of their soaps for Olympics coverage. Sarajevo winter: February 8-19, 1984 - ABC had the broadcasting rights. Los Angeles summer: July 28-August 12, 1984 - ABC had the broadcasting rights. Calgary winter: February 13-28, 1988 - ABC had the broadcasting rights. Steve/Kayla wedding got Days to #1. I take it Days didn't reach #1 when Bo/Hope got married.

@JAS0N47 Thanks again for bringing this part of daytime history to us. The first half of 1981 will be interesting for CBS, to see the lead up to the new schedule that started June 8.

Y&R July 2023 Discussion Thread
I always thought of Y&R's core four as Jeanne Cooper, Doug Davidson, Melody Thomas Scott, Eric Braeden. With Jeanne having left us a decade ago and now Doug effectively off the show, it almost feels like the end of an era. MTS is now Y&R's longest-serving cast member and she is the last cast member left that debuted in the 1970s.

Falcon Crest
That storyline was awful (it was sort of a dust off of that slimy film producer from season 2). When I mention inconsistencies and plot holes that are apparent when watching daily or binge watching, it's this storyline that comes to mind. Season 6 had a rewrite to add an assault to lead to a who's the daddy storyline. Season 5, the kidnapping/hostage there was no indication of an assault (clothing was intact and no injuries). In the rescue, no mention of an assault to the police. In the hospital, no medical exam or tests or medications. Maybe 1986 primetime soap viewers didn't think it was irresponsible to use an assault as a plot device, but through a 2023 lens it certainly is. I'd even say by 1991 it would be considered irresponsible.

That's why I will always refer to Miami Vice as the new hotness. Angela Lansbury threw the most elegant and classy shade ever when she called it Miami Heat. It will never not be funny to me that Murder, She Wrote clean swept Miami Vice. The last time I remember seeing Miami Vice reruns was early 2000s. Even then it hadn't aged well. It was like watching an hour long music video pretending to be a police procedural.

Not to derail the thread, but as far as network daytime game shows not named The Price is Right go, they really start to lose clearance from Fall 1986 through the end of the decade. That overlaps with Oprah going national and changing the syndication game.

Falcon Crest
I liked Chao-Li and I considered him part of the Channing family, not just their domestic help. It was a missed opportunity that his backstory and family wasn't fully explored, especially in the later years. There could have been storylines involving his backstory/family that tie-in Chinese-American history in California wine country and future (in the 1980s anyway) events ie. Hong Kong handover and China economic reforms.

Y&R/B&B/GL Vault Updates
The second half of 1997 through 1998 was the last time I'd say Y&R was truly excellent.
