  1. Y&R got 9 consecutive weeks at #1 during Summer 1986. September 8-12, 1986 was first week of Oprah gone national and clearances for the bottom three dropped from the previous week. It'll be interesting to see if there was an Oprah effect in subsequent weeks.
  2. 90210 didn't start until 1990.
  3. Please let there be less garbage time this month.
  4. When watching episodes from the main 1980s/1990s eras, GL feels like a different show each time. Potter/Marland held its own against General Hospital when that show was at it's peak as a pop culture phenomenon. Storylines from that era that impacted GL until the end were Roger's fall off the cliff in Santo Domingo; Alan/Hope marriage; intros of Chamberlain, Lewis, Reardon families. Kobe/Long Spring 1983-Summer 1984 set in motion characters and storylines that would carry GL through its final 25 years (Lewis family expanded and elevated to a main family, Phillip/Beth, Josh/Reva, Alexandra) but it was too much chasing 1980s trends. Willmore/Long had the task of cleaning up the mess from the writer turnover of 1986 through first half of 1987, plus that era was also affected by the 1988 writer's strike. Storylines from that era that impacted GL until the end were intro of the Cooper family and returns of Holly and Roger. Calhoun/Long/Curlee GL thrived despite the ratings not reflecting that. JFP/Curlee July 1991-August 1992 coasted off the groundwork laid in the Calhoun era and the ratings increased that first year but the momentum didn't last. Then came the events of 1993 that changed the show forever and we know the rest.
  5. Eileen Davidson interview from early 1983 where she talks about Y&R popularity in Canada. Marla Adams and Tracey Bregman appearance at 1985 Children's Miracle Network Telethon in Toronto.
  6. Y&R is killing it Summer 1986. Another four weeks at #1, bringing them to 7 consecutive weeks at #1. We are three weeks away from Oprah going national.
  7. Family Matters season 1 was Friday 8:30 pm, the lead out from Full House. Pre-Urkel episodes September 22, 1989: The Mama Who Came to Dinner (series premiere), rating 13.9, 38th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch on NBC and Snoops on CBS. September 29, 1989: Two Income Family, rating 12.8, 41st for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Snoops. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Snoops. November 3, 1989: Basketball Blues, rating 13.7, 37th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS replaced Snoops with A Peaceable Kingdom. November 10, 1989: Body Damage, rating 12.9, 39th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Snoops. November 17, 1989: Mr. Badwrench, rating 13.0, 35th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. NBC replaced Baywatch with Back to the Future. November 24, 1989: Stake-Out, rating 11.3, 46th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS replaced Snoops with Ice Stars Review. December 1, 1989: False Arrest, rating 13.9, 33rd for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Snoops. December 8, 1989: The Quilt, rating 14.3, 26th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Snoops. Season 1 Urkel episodes December 15, 1989: Laura's First Date, rating 11.3, 56th for the week. CBS replaced Snoops with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and wins 8-9 pm time slot. January 5, 1990: Man's Best Friend, rating 14.4, 35th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS pulled Snoops from the schedule and new Friday 8 pm show is Max Monroe: Loose Cannon. January 12, 1990: Baker's Dozen, rating 15.5, 32nd for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and Max Monroe: Loose Cannon. January 19, 1990: The Big Reunion, rating 16.0 (season high), 21st for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. NBC replaced Baywatch with True Blue. February 2, 1990: The Party, rating 15.3, 24th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS replaced Max Monroe: Loose Cannon with You Don't Look 40, Charlie Brown. February 9, 1990: The Big Fix, rating 13.9, 30th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS pulled Max Monroe: Loose Cannon from the schedule and new Friday 8 pm show is The Bradys. February 23, 1990: Sitting Pretty, rating 14.3, 31st for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot over Baywatch and The Bradys. March 16, 1990: In a Jam, rating 13.5, 31st for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS cancelled The Bradys after the March 9, 1990 episode and March 16 CBS broadcast Why Charlie Brown? and Bugs Bunny Special. March 23, 1990: The Candidate, rating 14.8, 23rd for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS broadcast NCAA Men's Basketball. April 20, 1990: Bowl Me Over, rating 12.7, 33rd for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. CBS broadcast Dolphins, Whales, and Us. April 27, 1990: Rock Video (season 1 finale), rating 13.2, 30th for the week. ABC wins 8-9 pm time slot. NBC replaced Baywatch with Mancuso FBI. CBS broadcast Candid Camera Special. Pre-Urkel episodes average 13.4. Urkel episodes average 14.1. Overall average 13.7. Family Matters was not in the 1989/90 Top 30. The numbers show a boost with the Urkel episodes but there's also the factors of lead in Full House showing growth (going from below the Top 30 in 1988/89 to 22nd in 1989/90) plus NBC and CBS not offering much competition (Baywatch on NBC was one season and done, and CBS was in the midst of its third place primetime mess era where nothing was really working as far as new shows go).
  8. Y&R is huge in Canada and has been since the 1970s. Another World was popular in Canada from the 1970s until the very end. It's following remained in Canada even though it was in the lower tier ratings-wise in the United States during the final 20 years.
  9. Y&R corporate storylines look good on paper, but I'm not expecting the execution to live up to the potential. I still think there's a good amount of garbage time though.
  10. Come on now, don't knock Urkel. He was the breakout character that saved Family Matters from cancellation.
  11. @JAS0N47 You are amazing and should be knighted Thanks again for bringing all this soap history to us. @YRfan23 We have a 1990s Ratings thread here
  12. @Darn I meant in the sense that when Bradley runs out of storylines he goes back to Sheila.
  13. Since Billy's 1999 SORAS, Jason Thompson has played him the longest (7 years).
  14. As the World Turns really thrived 1986 and 1987. They also got a good Emmy haul in 1987, three acting Emmys and best show.
  15. Y&R #1 three weeks so far in Summer 1986. We saw July 18, 1986 during the classics, Victor proposal to Ashley.
  16. Urkel TGIF crossovers I would've loved a Family Matters/Perfect Strangers crossover with Urkel meeting Balki.
  17. We'll get to see if Oprah affected the clearances of the low tier soaps. We know she was pretty much responsible for the end of daytime network game shows not named The Price is Right. On the syndicated talk show vein, Merv Griffin ended September 5, 1986 so Oprah's main competition initially was Phil Donahue, Sally Jessy Raphael, Gary Collins, then a year later Geraldo Rivera.
  18. @JAS0N47 Thank you for the Days info. As the World Turns has tough competition from Days, All My Children, One Life to Live. Capitol is on the way out. Guiding Light is slipping.
  19. John/Jill divorce and Jill's shooting.
  20. June 20, 1986 Y&R Brad/Traci wedding. What was happening on Days to get to 3rd? Days hadn't been 3rd since Bo/Hope wedding I believe.
  21. 1986 was the first summer concert I remember.
  22. June 26, 1986 Y&R Tricia Cast debut. Summer 1986 Y&R Lauralee Bell is now a full time cast member. Cricket proceeds to eat the show for the rest of the decade.
  23. This week CBS started The Price is Right season 52 and Let's Make a Deal season 15. On June 12, 2023, Let's Make a Deal moved past the NBC 1966-1980 version of Hollywood Squares to become the fourth longest-running game show on US daytime network television. Let's Make a Deal will reach two other milestones during season 15: On March 29, 2024, Let's Make a Deal will move past the NBC 1975-1989 version of Wheel of Fortune to become the third longest-running game show on US daytime network television. On May 3, 2024, Let's Make a Deal will move past the NBC 1958-1973 version of Concentration to become the second longest-running game show on US daytime network television.
  24. Also be on the lookout for cut syndication episodes vs. full original broadcast episodes. I think The Golden Girls DVDs had some cut syndication episodes and not full original broadcast episodes.
  25. I created this thread so we could share memories of ABC's 1989-2000 TGIF Friday comedy block. These comedies were part of the TGIF line up Full House (1989-1991) Family Matters (1989-1997) Perfect Strangers (1989-1992) Just the Ten of Us (1989-1990) Going Places (1990-1991) Baby Talk (1991-1992) Dinosaurs (1991-1993) Step by Step (1991-1997) Billy (1992) Camp Wilder (1992-1993) Getting By (1993) Where I Live (1993) Home Free (1993) Boy Meets World (1993-2000) Hangin' with Mr. Cooper (1993-1997) Sister, Sister (1994-1995) On Our Own (1995) Muppets Tonight (1996) Aliens in the Family (1996) Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996-2000) Clueless (1996-1997) You Wish (1997-1998) Teen Angel (1997-1998) Hiller and Diller (1998) Two of a Kind (1998-1999) Brother's Keeper (1998-1999) Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place (1999) The Hughley's (1999-2000) Odd Man Out (1999-2000) The TGIF comedy block was a 1990s staple and I'm sure the 1990s kids/teens here have good memories of some of these shows. I'll start with clips from a memorable episode that will be celebrating it's 30th anniversary on November 12.
