Guiding Light Discussion Thread
It's hard to remember that JFP got her start at GL (as a production secretary, I think). So, for her, returning as EP was like coming home, or having things come full circle. Look, I'll concede that JFP wasn't GL's worst EP, but I do agree that the show suffered once Nancy Curlee and Patrick Mulcahey left and JFP was left to her own devices. She needed a HW who could push back and tell her to leave the writing to the writers.

I agree. They shouldn't have changed it. They could've spruced it up over the years, like how DAYS has spruced up theirs, but it should've remained just a hand opening the photo album to the title page. When I tuned in one day to see that that was gone, my heart sank, because I knew that AMC never would be the same.

That AMC opening (shown at the beginning of the video) still feels like home to me.

Melrose Place
Did they touch at all on Hayes' life and career post-MP? (I'm guessing they didn't, but I thought I'd ask anyway, lol).

Sisters Discussion Thread
I still think NBC mandated this and other, darker storylines in an attempt to make "Sisters" more desirable to male demographics.

Falcon Crest
An (im)perfect time, I guess, to remind everyone how I wish J.R. had discovered he had had a daughter with Vanessa Beaumont rather than a son (James Richard). Anyways. Back to FC.

ALL: Popular Actors playing Unpopular Characters
And that's fine, I've no qualms about that sort of thing, especially when the actor is decent. (JFP and Kale Browne are another story, lol). I think BW would be an asset to any show, because he seems like an actor who respects the genre, respects the writing (that is, when the writing is good) and who doesn't phone in performances. In GH's case, though, they simply gave him the wrong role to play.

ALL: Popular Actors playing Unpopular Characters
I think even Billy Warlock would agree that he was miscast. I, myself, was willing to give him a chance, since I don't think there had been a definitive take on the character. But it was so obvious how Bob Guza resented JFP (or Riche, or whoever was EP at that time) foisting BW on him. I still think Y&R would have been better off casting MW as Sharon's long-lost half-sister. Sharon is a character who DESPERATELY needs relatives on the canvas, IMO.

Knots Landing
Exactly. Plus, a primetime soap is just designed for a different kind of audience, one who might not typically follow a continuing drama (although, these days, what series isn't continuing, lol). I don't want to say primetime soaps have to be more plot-driven, but you certainly don't have the luxury of time to develop characters that you do on daytime. Therefore, characters have to be bolder and easier to classify; stories have to move quicker and be more linear; episodes themselves have to have more self-contained elements; and there have to be more allowances for spectacles like explosions and car crashes and whatnot, because the more sedate and studio-bound you are on a primetime soap, the more you risk boring the audience. In fact, I always compare it to a televised sports event: a daytime soap is like watching the actual game, while a primetime soap is like watching the highlights later that night on the evening news. Especially when nothing was happening other than Krystle being locked up for months and Rita attempting to murder Blake. At the very least, it could have been used to launch several different storylines - "Krystle" assumes control of Denver Carrington and wages war against Alexis! "Krystle" becomes attracted to Dex and the two have a torrid affair! ANYTHING! - instead of just staying on the same note episode after episode and making everyone look utterly foolish.

Yeah, as much as I adore CM as an actress, her Y&R work proved to me that even she had limits. I think she's too centered as an actress and person to play someone who isn't.

No no no, I wouldn't have delayed it that long, lol! You can get away with delaying for 6-7 years on a daytime soap, but the rules are different for primetime soaps. Audiences there don't have as much patience. I'd say maybe a season, at the most.

Ratings from the 70's
And IIRC, Bill Bell ultimately had no say in the matter: "Y&R is expanding, with OR without you."
