  • I personally don't think that disliking White Savior Joey is an indication the character is working. If it's a choice between King Joey and Duprees Strong, I choose neither.

The Y&R actors must be wondering WTH is going on when they're the #1 show with a budget of $1.98 and BTG can turn on this kind of event with extras, costumes, special effects etc.

100 percent right! This is what P&G Studios can produce when they choose to do it.

I said it once and I will say it again: if Joey was black the show would be accused of pushing negative stereotypes.

Thank you!!

I think having two of the black leads be adulterers is much more of a stereotype than having a black mobster.

I agree.

As others have pointed out, we've seen Black criminals for years on BET dramas and elsewhere. It's insulting to think BTG can't write a Black power broker who's on the wrong side.

We can like and even love this show and still point out problems. I will not stop complaining about white saviors and power on this show until they stop feeding it to us.

BTG must be selling a lot of Tide for P&G. A cotillion and tornado within a month. This show has those good P&G production values.

Considering CBS has direct production credit in Beyond the Gates, I would wager that makes them more financially invested in the serial's production.

Again, I strongly suspect Joey being the prime mover in most criminal activity on canvas may be an NAACP push. Keeping the core Black characters and Duprees' hands relatively clean by comparison. I agree it's not a great look despite what I suspect are BTS concerns about representation (nor is that hands-off treatment a realistic or sustainable proposition for a daytime soap), though I am fine with Jon's portrayal. I just think the character has a limited shelf life and needs to see a downfall and be done in the next year.

If the character was black, I’d probably be able to actually stomach him. I mean they already have Randy as muscle for the mobster and two black corrupt cops. I’m not understanding this idea that a black mobster would somehow be bad representation.

I would be able to stomach a Black Joey also, but I feel like TPTB would be damned either way.

I said it once and I will say it again: if Joey was black the show would be accused of pushing negative stereotypes. Joey has to be white and his sister has to be white. If Heather was a biracial woman that still could be a problem for the show. BTG is in it's beginning stages. It has to be white kingpins/queenpins first. Then the black or latino ones might come later.

Naw I think that argument would only hold water if this was a show filled with nothing but criminals and downtrodden black folks and no nuance. The stereotyping accusations mainly come when that is the only representation black characters are given.

What they’re currently doing by having Joey exert power and control over the Dupree’s and he, Vanessa and Ashley hogging all this airtime leaves a far worse impression for me. You invited an audience and said “this is for you” then pulled the rug out from under us.

You articulated this perfectly.

Randy, Marcel and Evil Overton (Elon) are lower tier characters, and tbh they go back and forth a lot with how they portray Elon as good or corrupt. They want it both ways with him. I can see the issue BTS being needing a more high profile/contract player in the underworld, and one of the key production outlets possibly pushing for it not to be a Black character.

MVJ clearly adores Jon Lindstrom and always has but I don't think the balance on any other soap would be this skewed. It just feels like they are straining in the narrative against having to be very hands-off or constantly positively affirming the Duprees. Yes, they have their hands in some cover-ups and conspiracies with Joey, but it often defaults back to the great and wonderful Dupree clan so far while Joey, Lea, Ashley Jones or the other support players (or Hayley/Leslie) take the weight. The experienced soap pros at this show know that is not realistic long-term. And I agree it inadvertently sends the wrong message while possibly trying to send a different one.
