Rumor Report

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, which soap star terrorizes their soap’s cast and crew? Who tested positive for COVID and their show kept it a secret? Which diva is threatened by a rising new hire? And which two familiar faces will be on this soap soon? These items and more are highlighted in the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest (January 2, 2023), on newsstands now, in the magazine’s “Stuff We Know (and shouldn’t tell you)” section which has always been a fascinating read, and that’s why we like discussing it with you. After all, it’s no fun to be told something in print and not have anyone to talk about it with!

Although the blind items aren’t likely to be answered by the magazine anytime soon, and we’re sure none of the people in items 1-4 will fess up to anything, why not take a gander at who/what these are all about?

BLIND ITEMS:

  1. Regarding the performer terrorizing the show’s cast/crew, including “unleashing their fury on producers, directors, and other crew,” the magazine notes, “Staff does their best to avoid contact, but co-stars and key departments are forced to smile and play nice to not upset production. It’s a tense situation.”
  2. With COVID testing and positive outcomes becoming a regular part of our everyday lives, it’s a wonder why “This soap is keeping a lid on which cast member, who figures prominently in a current storyline, [that] tested positive for Covid and had to quarantine at home.”
  3. According to the magazine, “An actor declined to name his/her significant other, although that person’s identity is prominently displayed on social media.” The answer is maybe too evident if you ask us.
  4. A leading lady on her soap is threatened by the “rising storyline prominence of a more recent hire.”
  5. Meanwhile, two familiar faces will be “on this soap in the coming weeks.”

Is Greg Vaughn really the type to "terrorize" a set?

3. I agree with Mark Grossman and Courtney Hope. Maybe he's trying to be respectful with Sharon Case or Courtney doesn't want it "public" after her mess with Chad Duell?

4. Melody Thomas Scott jealous of Courtney Hope?

5. Doesn't Days have some "returns" for Christmas?

Okay I'll play.

1. This one is a tough one. Hmmmmm. I would think that if they are a terror on set, but people are going out of their way to please them, it would be somebody major. So...given some of the tea here...I would go with Maurice Benard.

2. Again going back to the tea here, I would say Marcus Columa out right. He is in current story and around these parts he has been anti-vax on the sly. It not only explains their need to sub in other actors, but why he was let go. Especially after all the drama around IR and SB and their stance against NG.

3. Yeah, I would say Mark and Courtney as well. Especially after the Soap Awards this past year.

4. Sharon and Courtney. Have Alison done enough scenes for Michelle to feel threatened?

5. I figured this was Peter and Kristian out right.

Didn't even know that SOD still existed. lol And a cover price of $6.99??? Wow. No thanks. Rumors are always based in a tiny grain of fact and then blown up to sell magazines. Regarding blind item #1, I don't care who it is - if that 'rumor' is true, why is it being tolerated? There is not 1 star on daytime who's behavior like that should be tolerated.

I guess that I don't pay attention, lol. I think that I thought that SOD was an e-magazine only and not still in print. I avoid spoilers so maybe I subconsciously ignore anything SOD related. I was a long time subscriber to SOD but gave it up in the early 2000's when there were still 8 or 9 soaps left. Can't imagine how thin an issue is now.

Great guesses!

Courtney is one lucky girl! Go get it!

If it's Ari she has nothing to worry about where Lindsay Arnold is concerned but as for Jessica Serfaty I'd be concerned.

  • Maurice Benard. No doubts about it. OR Eric Braeden.
  • Camila Banus or Marcus Coloma (though, Coloma's was pretty much confirmed by Adam Huss' temporary portrayal, yes? I know it came out Huss came back because Coloma tested positive.)
  • Really? It's Mark Grossman & Courtney Hope. There is no question about this one.
  • I'd hate to call Michelle Stafford a "leading lady," because I don't consider her one, but it wouldn't put it past her for it to be about her regarding Alison Lanier.
  • Kristian Alfonso & Peter Reckell / Matt Cohen & Emily Wilson.

My reasoning was that it must be difficult for Ari, who is younger than Dee and Lauren, so she's not at that vet status, despite her thirty years on the show, but older than her scene partners like Elia Cantu and Jessica, which must play on the eternal stress that aging has on actresses in Hollywood.  The same could probably be said for Kelly Monaco or Laura Wright who are still playing romantic leads, even though their antagonists keep getting cast with younger women.  And a mean soap editor is more likely to write about this issue as a conflict between women, rather than questioning why a genre watched by middle aged female fans can't find more creative plots for their actresses who are no longer ingenues.

Excellent guess, and I adored that twist today

My only hesitation about Maurice as #1 is - does a blind item count if the gossip is so widely discussed?  It would be like saying. "don't tell anyone but DAYS likes to have their actors be shirtless at least once week" or blind item "which soap production can only afford to shoot in two sets per episode?"

In fact, a thread on not-so-blind items would be a humorous way to celebrate this festive season

    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
    • Oh good, so I don't have to wait too long haha. I'm glad she cares about seeing Bill graduate. I'm guessing I'm in for a bumpy ride between Bill and Matt, if he's going to be his caretaker? Who else could it be, maybe Josh?

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
