ABC: ‘All My Children’: Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos Developing Primetime Version

lWell, it's taken me some time to figure out what I think and what I feel about this. I'm still not sure. My mind is still kind of racing over it all.

I love the idea of "rebooting" a daytime soap as a primetime version. It has SO much potential. It does sound like the 'right' people are behind it, though Ripa and Consuelous give me a bit of pause, but at least they are 'name' enough to help get it off the ground I suppose.

They'd be really stupid not to have Susan Lucci and Eva LaRue starring. And I also agree they need to have SMG as Kendall. I love Minshew but SMG is name recognition, and she originated the role to huge fanfare.

AMC has a LOT of past stars that became famous or well known, or at least had some success away from the show. They'd be stupid not to capitalize on that.

They'd also be stupid not to focus it on Sam Grey. He's a Martin, a Cortlandt and a Santos. And of course you need Maddie if there's some Santos/Kane "feud" (that leaves me a little less interested, but it could have potential; I would love to see Maria and Erica going at it again). As a journalist, you'd be stupid not to find a way to tie in Tempo and Brooke English, who was of course married to Sam's adopted daddy Edmund.

I could go on for days at the possibilities ... but I do have my expectations in check and am aware of this being it's "own thing", which is fine, but use what you have. Otherwise, what's the point?

Oh, and another point, they could easily weave in other vets/characters should they so choose. Erica needs a friend: enter Opal and Jill Larson. If they use Sam, he needs a boss, who better than his former stepmother? Enter Brooke English.

And Michael Nader was once a primetime Dynasty star and seems to have his issues in check. I wouldn't mind Dimitri. You'd have to mention him if it's a Kane/Santos feud, right?

EDIT: They'd also be stupid not to have Debbi Morgan starring right alongside Susan and Eva. Then you can have Cornelius Smith Jr. back as Frankie ...

See the potential? Will they use it?

EDIT: I wonder if we see Chrishell Stause as Amanda again. She was just on Dancing with the Stars ...

I would hope they'd give Julia Barr a cameo at some point with Brooke as Adam's widow. I don't expect to see everyone in key roles when you're reinventing a daytime soap for primetime (the mind still boggles at the logistical dangers tbqh), but I do think you can make those little allowances. Nader, I'm not sure ABC would've ever brought him back but PP did and he was wonderful in 2013. I would kill to see Dimitri once more, but it's a question of a) whether the network would allow it and b) if anyone involved gives a solitary shít.

They need to run Debbi her dollars and have her there on a regular basis. I don't care about what's practical or realistic with primetime in that case. But she did just have an extended run on Power.

If it winds up going to series, it will be a new show that shares a setting with the old show, with a few cameos from old cast members sprinkled in. There will be an entirely new story; they’re not going to try to tie it back to old stories, because that will be off-putting to the new, younger viewers they hope to attract.

If lucci agrees to come back, I dont think she will be just a cameo. Or eva larue since the story will be about a feud between the families. But i could be  wrong.

Other than that though i think im alright with everything being new. Im just curious about who they cast and if this will be good.

If this has the Hubbard's involved heavily with the Santos and Kane families I am in. Would be interesting to see SMG back as Kendall. I think it is really easy to settle for Erica/Maria/Kendall/Angie/Jesse and their offspring  and I would be happy.

The Jesse/Angie/David triangle made the 2013 show for me.

I wonder if given Kelly and Mark's involvement this will reflect AMC circa  the early to mid 90s mainly?

Lots of details to come and the success of this program could make or break the future.

Debbi is on the Power spin off too. Honestly if they’re smart they’ll lean heavily into black representation for the show. Debbi is known by viewers of all ages and she can pull in black viewers. If they used Debbi Morgan, Susan Lucci and Eva Larue as faces for the show I do think that could go a long way to making the show successful. You cover a lot of bases just with those three heading the different families.

The casting for the new actors will be important too. I feel like other than the writing, what hurt the new Dallas was that they had a bunch of unknowns who weren’t the strongest actors. Because of that the only pull was the original actors. This needs to be a modern reboot with a compelling cast overall.

The casting was bad for Dallas. It had nothing to do with unknowns. Jesse Metcalf as Christopher was downright terrible. The storylines sucked too. The best part of the reboot was seeing all the original cast. Dallas lasted 3 seasons. It was on cable and given more time. I don't see AMC lasting more than 2 seasons. It better make a splash on its first episode if not it won't last the year on air.

    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
