I have to disagree - I don't believe Tom Cotton is a lickspittle Republican - he's hugely influential and, among other things, was one of the main reasons for the ugly death of the Iran nuclear deal.

I'm not doubting the comment reactions, or some of the reporters or sources who are revolting tonight, or claiming to revolt, but this is a paper that has been on the wrong side of history countless times, lied to kill millions in Iraq, and most recently, feverishly worked to help install the racist fascist we now have in office. They are moving the goalposts again, not only continuing to help Trump get reelected, but also trying to pave the way for him to put soldiers in our streets. It's extremely dangerous.

He's also basically backed up by the tone and tenor of the paper. They may have some left-wing op-ed writers, but this is what gets on their front page:

Cotton isn't an outlier for them, or red meat. It's just another step toward the fascism they are happy to enable if it keeps them in with the right people and makes them feel Important and Impartial.

I was looking at some of the DC protest from tonight, before the fires started anyway, and lulled myself into a brief delusion before the above footage reminded me of the reality. The person stuck in traffic filming casual police brutality is one of those moments where you feel like you're watching a dystopian series.

Oh, that's right! How did I forget the Murder Hornets? They must be the modern equivalent of said locusts!  I wish I could make like Rip Van Winkle, and sleep 'til November 3rd. If Trump loses, I stay awake. If not (and God, I hate typing that!), wake me in 2024. Sigh.

It's interesting to see the discussion about cop shows. Since I'm stuck at home I found a channel called Start TV which is devoted to woman centered shows especially legal ones. Medium, Cold Case, Forgotten, Crossing Jordan, etc... It just plays in the background while I work. Today I just kept watching and thinking that these shows have completely glorified policing and are probably a big part of why so many unstable people decided they want to be cops.

Whether the networks apologize or not, I think we might see the appeal of cop shows start to fade.

Before George Floyd's murder, I'd seen some debate on Twitter about how unrealistic Brooklyn 99 was, how progressive all the characters were even though a supermajority of cops are Trump supporters (this was partially tied to a debate of how unrealistic the Michael Schur workplace sitcoms have always been). At the time I had mixed feelings, because I thought - well, it's just a fantasy, people know it's not real life. After the last week, and other stories (I think this was already posted here) like the one about the L&O writer who was tweeting about wanting to kill looters, I realize the shows are a real concern and should be addressed.

I think we will see a fade of some (probably not the Chicago PD/Fire/etc. series) and then they will return in a year or two under the umbrella of some kind of "good cop against the system" banner.

Watching the John Lewis interview, I can't imagine how he's feeling and what he must be reliving.

    • To me, Judith McConnell (Sophia, SB) was more poised for Beth than anyone else. Yes, she was, as Sister Beatrice.
    • Is that even still possible? I thought that too at first but with Jan saying that she's never lied to Ashley about who her father is... Does Ashley even know who her dad is?
    • Unfortunately I only had one or two pages from those months. I believe I posted them but it would only cover one or two shows.
    • I think she would have been fine, although Beth was a thankless part. She probably was seen as aging out of the genre after AW.  I forgot she was on Sunset Beach.
    • Nicole's lucky Im no a soap villian bc if I was Wig, Id replace the liquid in her Febreze bottle with an odorless poison so that everytime she sprayed that thing, she'd be slowly killing herself

    • OK, I like the Cat interactions with Xander and EJ. And, I get that there are new writers. But, Clyde was shot 12/11/2024.  So, why have we not heard Xander or EJ's response to the situation for five months!  Clyde shot EJ (or he ordered him shot), shouldn't he react more to the news of his coma.  And, I've never heard EJ or Kristin mention that the woman who lived with them last summer was a fraud. Rather than giving lip service to the idea of family and community, at least it feels like everyone no longer lives in a bubble. Also, while it makes sense to use the hospital as the prize in the war between EJ and Xander.  We all have to admit that under the prior writer, at least Xander, and I think EJ, were dissuaded from buying the hospital went it started to go under in March.  I get the magic sepsis cure makes the hospital more valuable.  But, it seems like the people who are going to get rich are going to be the pharmaceutical companies.  Unless, Kayla and Sarah are going to start manufacturing prescription drugs out of the coffee machine in the lobby.  -- crud, I broke my promise to stop complaining about illogical this story can be.
    • I don't know if I could have seen that from her, honestly. But I feel like, outside of GH and her original DAYS stint, American daytime really didn't pay much attention to her, even though they should have.
    • Co-sign, 100% on this one. Xander was entirely in the wrong.
    • I'm seeing some interesting takes on this thread regarding Dani's behavior/personality, including right now. Here's my take on her: I think that Dani relishes in lighting people up. I think that's for multiple reasons.  I feel like Dani has probably largely been like this throughout her life. And that she gets joy in dragging people whenever she feels like it's necessary. I believe she feels like this is her being herself. I think one big reason why she's particularly giddy right now is because she's able to go back to acting this way, minus the hurt she's been dealing with due to Bill's affair. She got in Bill and Hayley's faces after their affair/wedding, but she was miserable doing it due to dealing with the hurt of that situation. Nicole's situation with Ted/Eva/Leslie allows her to act this way minus her suffering like she did at the hands of Bill. I believe she does empathize/care for her sister but is also interestingly enough rejuvenated by this situation. This situation is energizing her and making her act more like old self again, minus being hurt by her own's husband's infidelity. I think Nicole's situation is also a distraction for her from dealing with her own failed marriage to Bill.
