Big deal to phased out

Hearing the name Dimitri Merrick on a recent GH episode made me nostalgic for when he arrived on AMC, and that lead me to thinking about how that show slowly phased him out.

If you watched AMC in the early 1990’s, Edmund and Dimitri were huge characters that were always front burner.  An entire family backstory, a significant set (Wildwind), and romantic pairings with important veterans of their shows (Erica and Brooke). But then kind of suddenly they were not.  They just slowly phased them out completely.

These were not flash in the pan characters, but instead kind of discarded after relatively short periods of importance in the grand scheme of things on their shows.

Other examples?

Y&R

Paul Williams - had a family built around him, married 2 leading ladies (amongst others) and front burner for years before slowly diminishing in importance and then dropped quietly. Back in the same limited capacity (grouchy, ineffective police chief)

On the Dimitri front, that was due to Michael Nader being on drugs. AMC did temp recast with Anthony Addabo but he was miscast. Then Dimitri & Alex were gone 3 months later

Michael reprised Dimitri in 2013 on AMC revival

I wonder if Eva & John's divorce led to Edmund being killed off in Jan 2005

And they did nothing with Christian Campbell as Bobby Warner or Natalia Calgulia as Anita

So true - and Nick was annoying as heck. As soon as Brad saw the magic with Stuffy/Lame/Dope, the show quickly erased Nick/Jackie/Owen, etc. The whole Marone thing was a huge mistake all because they wanted Joe so much, which bombed from Day 1. Now with Rick vanquished, the only "Forrester" legacy children on-canvas are actually from the Marone line.

John Dixon, ATWT

While some characters on ATWT only seemed to get a lot of story during one, maybe two writing regimes (if they were fortunate), John got quite a bit of prominent storylines over several writing regimes from the late 1970s throughout the entire 1980s.

Even in the 1990s, he got a pretty decent amount of screen time, although the quality of the stories could be inconsistent.

A few years before he left though, he seemed to be a glorified extra at times.  I guess those disputes of seniority and salary pay-cuts were really brought to bear before he pretty much faded and only showed up for a brief story arc right before the show's cancellation to usher Lucinda off the canvas.

    • With Eva having Ted on her side now. Leslie will for sure now be jealous of her, lol. This should be fun.
    • It's possible that Leslie has narcissistic personality disorder https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/narcissistic-personality-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20366662
    • Me saying all the praise for Eva/Ambyr. Y'all..

    • Yeah, something is not right here. I will continue to have doubts about Leslie being Eva's mother for the time being. Until at least the writing/behavior of her character changes. She is acting way too cold/uncaring/hateful to be her mother. I know as soap fans, we have seen our share of rough around the edges, bad acting mothers. But even some of the roughest of soap mothers have acted like they love their children. Even if they don't always make the best decisions regarding them. Or are often at odds with them. Leslie has not shown anything for me to show that she even cares about Eva, even a little. It's all about what Leslie/wants needs and what Eva can do for her. As soon as she felt like Eva no longer served a purpose for her she threw her away. I am interested in seeing what happens with Leslie going forward. She really doesn't have anyone on her side. Eva at least now has Ted and Tomas to a lesser degree. I think that some others will eventually come to accept Eva in time.
    • I'm looking forward to seeing the first 18 minutes or so that we missed earlier this episode. But I loved what I saw today: I thought that what I saw of Bill's/Ted's interaction was realistic and interesting. I know we have hardly seen them interact, but I think that they have nice chemistry together. And Iiked the dialogue that they had about their roles/mistakes in this whole paternity reveal/hurting Nicole. I would like to see them interact more together in the future. I also enjoyed Dani being there for Nicole and giving her good advice. I did lol when Dani said she wanted to take off her earrings and be left alone with Leslie, Eva, Bill and Ted... I like Nicole as always acting mature and measured and trying to process what has happened to her along with support from her sister. I like that her family supported her and gave her space (including her parents) and then she went to them when she was ready. I enjoyed her scenes with her parents at the end. Speaking of parents, Leslie continues to act like this. Her behavior towards Eva is trash and she literally threw the picture of them together at the end in the trash. She really doesn't deserve Eva, and I continue to wonder if she really is her mother. She is just too cold towards her and sees her as a means to an end. I really wonder if she thought that Ted was going to help Eva. Or if she was hoping that he would turn her away as well. I'm glad he helped her and wants to try and have a relationship with her. It will cause conflict with the rest of the family, but it's the right thing for him to do, IMO.
    • What an interesting read @Paul Raven. Thank you so much for posting it. Annette
    • She’s riveting. And how she transitioned from utter devastation after the confrontation with Leslie to hopeful in the Ted scene—so seamless. She’s easily the most exciting actress I’ve seen in daytime in a looooooooong time. If she’s not the face of this show in a few months, they’re leaving money on the table.
    • Yeah either Leslie is a demented mother, or Leslie is not the real mother.
    • Ambyr is killing it per usual. The Eva and Leslie confrontation was GOOD. I gotta admit Ted taking in Eva and promising to do right by her made me cry.    See, he can still be a decent guy
