Way back when, I had the idea that Chancellor, run by Jill would make history as a majority-female run company.

I bet there'd be no trouble rounding up a room full of consequential women then.

  Instead we get Bro Inc.

Honestly, I didn't expect Lauren to be invited unless someone snuck her in, like how Hilary snuck in Phyllis.

The Sharon/Phyllis scenes did sort of work though because the writers brought Phyllis back to 'type'.

Hilary's role kind of fits in with her new image but I have to wonder if she came across Jordan again would she be all about the forgiveness she's so eagerly trying to sell everybody else?

As much as I hate to admit it, I liked today's episode too.

My only bitch would be that Michael described the manuscript as something Dina was working on for years, but every "flashback" we saw of her typing it, she's wearing the same clothes?!?!?

Like, WTF Dina!  Get your bitch Graham do to a load of laundry, girl!

This week has been really good. Dare I say the courtroom stuff actually got me teary eyed when Dina called Jack John. It wasn't over the top melodramatic but everything (even the guest lawyer) was done well. The dialogues and nods to history is one thing this regime is getting right without beating you over the head with it. When the lawyer grilled Jack about how often he sees his mother, well that about broke me.

The fragility of aging parents is not something you often see on soaps,  much less a "custody battle" where siblings have to band together to protect a loved one. A lot of it is hitting close to home for me personally, and I've really been touched by it.

A few good episodes strung together do not a good soap make, and Pratt's AMC and MAB's Y&R all started strong before devolving into destruction and nihilism. 2018 has started really strong, and I'm actually preferring it to DAYS at the moment.

Even though that twist wasn't a surprise (there were SS seemingly toyed with the nature of Dina and Graham's relationship in various scenes), it was still a good twist and well-timed.

Having Traci and Ashley searching through files in a race against the clock to just get there in time was a good use of the show's time and even created a bit of suspense (even though we knew they'd arrive in time) but the reversal (hey, it was a proper use of a dramatic reversal)  was that Graham rendered all that digging useless.

Even though I giggled a bit at Dina's typing skills (I would've thought she'd have handwritten then typed), I liked the transition from Michael's voice into hers, so that she's shown typing the manuscript and narrating the contents at the same time.

It almost goes without saying that Marla Adams has been masterly in acting out this storyline but it was poignant to see the reaction of Ashley, Traci and Jack as some passages from her unpublished memoir is being read aloud.

Graham didn't have to do much today and that was smart on the writers' part.

He's not charismatic in the way that soap villains were known to be in the past.  Then again, Y&R seems to be writing quite a few charisma-free male characters lately but that's a separate topic for another day.

Had there been a few other characters involved in today's episode, I would've said that they should submitted it for a Daytime Emmy pre-nomination but don't they usually prefer episodes involving a cross-section of various characters

But they wasted Dina's character by making her have this advanced phase of the disease.  She brought the Abbot story together and is such a class actress.  They could have told a different story and kept her around as a vital part of the business and family. So then what happens when she dies or they cart her off to Florida. There's no generational stories with the Abbots except with the sorased newbies. We needed a long term tent pole character to replace Katherine Chancellor as the grand dame of GC.

I agree.  They are having Dina decline way too fast and I mentioned this from the outset.  Unless there is some sort of magical elixir that will halt her deterioration, we know there is only one way for Dina to go.  She's too rich a character for them to have her off the canvas in a few months or so.

Also, I don't see anyone else in Dina's age group so it's unfortunate that there are no other characters that are seniors who are healthy, vital and robust. In fact, it's sort of depressing.

Still, in isolation, this was a well put together episode even if I don't like the long-term implications.

Every writing regime for the past 5 or 6 years now has been able to put together a good episode here and there.

Y&R's problem has been sustaining the quality on a consistent basis.  Also, this doesn't change the fact that MY still has a problem building cohesive storylines that stay with the viewer.  For me, a good, even a great episode won't change that, IMO.

Finishing off last week's Y&R and I have to admit regardless of how I feel about MY this writing for the Abbotts has been good and dramatic.  Liking this new lawyer of Ashley's though I side-eye Michael for saying this lawyer has underhanded tactics. And...you don't?

LOL at the shade Lauren just threw at Abby in the hotel hallway...which looks new.

And interesting that the episode I am watching (last Thursday) is the second episode that does start from the end of the previous episode (Christian being missing). The other one being Wednesday with Nick telling Sharon that Scott and Abby had sex.

So...is MY going to start doing that with the next day transition being something that happens within the episode? Because that won't bug me at all. Cuz starting from the end of the episode is totally building this drama.

    • I’m up to August 5, 1996. Another change to the opening music. The hollow whooshing sound is gone and they’ve add a soft rock, synthesizer-style sound to this more upbeat version. Ugh - they let Gilly and Griffin kiss before she found out the truth. So gross, what’s the point? And now once the truth has come out, Charles is like “oh yeah, I’ve always known he was your father, no big deal”?  What was all of this for? If he really always knew, he should have had a reaction when Griffin came to town last year, just like Vivian did.  I will say, the acting in the reveal scene was amazing, both actresses killed it. Now Vivian lost her husband, who is leaving her, and her daughter… and she already lost her son. The writers really trashed this entire family for nothing, how sad. She’s now running around town blaming everything on Griffin and trashing his name, but lady, no, it’s all your fault! I think I now just got to Gilly’s last episode (Aug 1). She just announced to the family at dinner that she’s leaving town for good and will not reach back out to her mother. What a terrible ending to this character and the family. Finally found a time I liked Alan. Marah (of course) and Shayne sneak away and go wandering on 5th street alone, but Shayne stays back in the abandoned building, just as they’re about to blow it up. Alan is sweet to Marah and realizes Shayne might still be there, so he runs to the building and tries to stop them from detonating the explosives, but he’s too late… he finally has a heart here haha. Although I guess this is still all his fault.  Watching Josh and Reva react to Shayne’s voice from within the rubble was really moving, great acting across the board here (Annie too). Ok, so Zachary shows up while everyone runs away from the rubble that’s falling, and he steps into it and finds Shayne. So is he like an angel or something supernatural? Because I don’t love supernatural stuff on my soaps unless that’s ‘normal’ for the show.  But Alan does eventually go in with Josh, so he’s risking his life to save Shayne, and that’s great. I was a huge Lucy/A-M fan and loved watching their relationship, but most couples work well when the actors have good chemistry. For me, now that Rick Hearst is gone, the relationship just isn’t working for me, sadly. I feel like Lucy and Zachary have better chemistry now haha. Abby’s mom has returned and she’s just highly frustrating and awful - that’s all. J just mentioned he has a sister - who is that? Unless she’s older and an adult, it’s a bit odd that she’s not around since now both Nola and Quint are in Springfield. She didn’t show at Henry’s funeral either, nor was mentioned. So Roger is now in the loony bin, after losing his court case. I’m side-eyeing Blake on this one. She was completely torn, which was nice to see, but she ultimately sided with Dinah/Hart which annoyed me. But, Bridget continues to win for me - she’s one of my favorites - and she just called out Dinah/Hart on their BS, and I’m here for it. If there were ever a moment for a slap, Dinah deserves one from Bridget. Speaking of slaps, I haven’t seen a single slap in the 18 months I’ve been watching this show!  Does GL just not traditionally do slaps? It’s a soap staple that I enjoy haha. Alex continues to be one of my favorites, likely because I’m such a fan of Dusay, her theatrics and heavy breathing. She keeps referring to Amanda as “Little Miss Madame” and it cracks me up.  Speaking of Amanda, she now just overheard nurses gossiping that Blake is having twins with two different fathers, so she knows the secret! This should get good now that she’s re-entered Ross/Blake’s orbit. Ah, so the A.Spaulding in question that paid Neil Everest off to frame Phillip was Alan-Michael!  Well, Lucy found a check he wrote to Neil, so I’m assuming so… this isn’t that interesting of a storyline though, so hopefully this doesn’t drag on too much longer. Now I just found out that Neil and Alan were cellmates in prison…it keeps going. And finally, Annie just faked a prescription for more pills and she just saw a ‘bad Annie’ image of herself who is encouraging her addiction.  Annie is officially talking to herself and since I know Jeva won’t allow a Josh/Annie relationship to survive, I’m all here for crazy Annie! Whoa! Griffin just got shot while giving a speech on 5th Street.  Curious to see what happens here, even though I’m not a Griffin fan.

    • I definitely think FV wanted to pair Kristina and Lucky.  Why else would Lucky decide to become a bartender at her stupid bar?  Lucky was a cop, a crusader?-whatever he was doing in Africa and all these years away.   It makes zero sense for him to just be content tending bar for some flakey girl he knew since she was born.  Have him work with Spinelli at PI firm or something.  There were also some scenes with Kristina and Lucky that seemed like the show was leaning in that direction.  I also suspect JJ was extremely unhappy with that idea lol. As far as Lulu, I certainly don't miss the JMB smug era.  I hate that BLQ looks like a poor, innocent victim being tortured by Lulu at every turn though.
    • I do think she's been pretty wrecked, having tried to kill someone in cold blood, letting her whole family (including the woman pregnant with her great-grandchild) get charged or questioned, and having no remorse, but it doesn't matter as much because Kathy has not existed as a character since Gillian's return anyway.  There are reasons to bring Max back, like Lauren and his not knowing he had a child with Linda, but he is exhausted, with Jake Wood phoning it in years before he left.  I am a little surprised about Zoe because Michelle Ryan said for years she didn't want to return, to the point of even asking the show to recast the role, but I guess this may only be a short stint. I wouldn't be shocked if they kill Zoe off.
    • HAHAHA. Yeah, that's my bad. I misread that line. Sorry about going into "Unnecessary" detail about my username. Anyway, I love the story behind your Username.    reading on my phone...

    • Completely agree with you. I think Bonita Brisker has been really good as Sharon. What Anita did was obviously awful, so she doesn't need to reign anything in. We're getting a good look at someone who's struggled in life compared to Anita "We're the Duprees!" Williams.   -- Anita is starting to look foolish for dredging all this up just so she  can get her ass back on stage. Is she so delusional she doesn't realize how she hurt Sharon and Tracy? -- Anita's line to Vernon "How can I expect Sharon to forgive me when I haven't forgiven myself" struck me as really selfish. After all that with Sharon, Anita again made it all about herself. -- Does anyone really believe Anita wants equal billing if the Articulettes reunite?  -- Colby Muhammad continues to be a standout. Her Kat more than holds her own with Leslie. -- The writing was very good for the father/daughter scene between Ted and Eva. It wasn't so good between Ted and Martin in their father/son scene. It didn't play like family to me, especially when Ted referred to "my wife" when talking about Nicole to Martin. -- Overall, a very solid show today.
    • I honestly do not see the point of Max coming back again. Zoe does not surprise me. I've been waiting for that since Bionic Woman flopped in the US, frankly. I'm not against it vs. some other pointless returns. Some returns work and some don't, some are just there. Like, am I grateful that Kathy is alive? Yes, absolutely. Do I love any of her stories? No. But she's not utterly destroyed, she's just there.
    • I think Frank probably wanted to try for Jonathan with Kate Mansi. I actually can't knock the idea of a Lucky/Kristina affair or flirtation on paper, as a romantic obstacle to LNL2, but not with the characters in the places they are at present or have been over the last few years. It would be a mistake to do right now and would poison the well. I think Jonathan probably made it clear when he came back that he wanted what had been promised to him years ago with Elizabeth, and between his not being one of FV's preferred focal leads and Liz being a grudging afterthought if she's not with one of his OLTL stars, I suspect FV was content to leave them where they are vs. where they should be, which is central on the show. It's like I said a few days ago: A lot of this is how Lulu has always been. But back in the day the issue was that Lulu (and Carly) were deified for it, whereas now it's that Lulu is just used as the heavy because FV has a preexisting favoritism for Setton/BLQ. And that's a waste of a key character and talent, namely Alexa Havins.
