I'm not sure that the world agrees on what James Bond looks like since it is unlikely that the world sees James Bond in the same way but I can only speak for myself. Some people, like I did, will see James Bond as the actor they first see portray him.

Daniel Craig is proof that looks aren't important for that role. All that really matters are age and physique at this point.

Casting directors and studios that don't want to change get to rely on the racist portion of their target audiences who seek to enforce "racial integrity" of characters. 50 years or 50 days shouldn't make a difference. It's laughable to say that audiences could accept a change in Catwoman in the sixties but 2014 and beyond is too late for a darker James Bond.

The time to make James Bond black (which is perfectly acceptable IMO) would've been when they REBOOTED the series with Casino Royale. I feel like it's too late now, but I've never felt this was the type of role defined by race. The reason I wouldn't do it now is because despite the improbability, I feel like everything that happened from Connery-Brosnan is meant to be the same person, whereas everything with Craig and whomever comes next is the same person. I also think if I had done it it wouldn't have been Idris in the role.

Eddie also badly wanted in on the Star Trek franchise around that time. He was going to be the supporting role in Star Trek IV, the one where they time-traveled back to contemporary San Francisco for the whales. He was all but in it until Paramount decided they didn't want to mix two cash cows together; Eddie's role was reworked and became that of Catherine Hicks's marine biologist, Kirk's love interest.

What do Rush Limbaugh and Hollywood have in common? Very interesting article, of particular note is the link to another article recounting the number of times white actors have portrayed people of color in films. Things that make you go hmm.
