I finally watched. That was great fun. Empire is a great example of "soapy goodness" in the complimentary sense.

Cookie can pull up a chair next to all the great soap divas both day and night. She's walking into the same palace as Alexis Carrington, Erica Kane, Alexandra Spaulding, Theresa Mendoza, Drucilla Barber Winters, Dorian Lord and Sue Ellen Ewing. Every one one of them knows what it means to say, "I want what's mine."

The episode had a LOT of rough spots but most pilots do. The characters felt a little stock to me. ("It's Shakespeare, y'all!") but those archetypes exist because they ring true.

I could go for less music. Or more accurately, I could go for the music being less loud, Not in a volume sense but in a "THIS SHOW IS ABOUT THE MUCIC BUSINESS!!!!" sense. Let it sit a little farther in the background.

There's was plenty of melodrama but more than that there was lots of genuine heart. The jailhouse scene between Cookie and young Jamal was perfect.

("Listen to me. You different, okay? It's something only Mama knows but it's gonna make life hard for you sometimes. But I want you to always remember I got you.")

She's really perfection. Cookie is everything and then some.

It's still early, but FOX hasn't released a series this good in years. The show is completely enthralling and it's a total soap opera but that isn't a bad thing at all when it's done right.

I loved that it's essentially based on a really complicated family and their business(es). No matter the zig-zags, it will always come back to that I trust.

I was actually watching the premiere with my mother, and when 10:02 came she was all "put it back on [Empire]" and she usually hates on almost every single thing on television.

I picked paranoid schizophrenia. He's saying things that just doesn't ring true based on what I see happening. His sense of reality seems very warped.

Watching the long trailer, The way he was sitting beside JHud watching her sing at tge piano gave me serious pause. He looked like he was going to attack her or something. Kinda scary. Please just let him be enthralled with her singing and wishing he had het talent.

Another thing...and I watched the show for the 3rd time, I realized something. When Cookie told Jamal she was out on good behavior she had a certain look as if it wasn't true. And Luscious made a point of saying the judge told them it would be 30 years. So, my speculation is that she was let out early as part of a plea deal to go undercover to bring someone down. Who, is anyone's guess. That would explain her dealings with these agents.

I say this because, if she as doing federal time, there is no parole and no early release, correct?

UGH! I HATE that my current situation prevents me from watching live and I wonder if I should just wait and marathon the first season when the time comes. The homophobic viewership hurts me, but does not at all surprise me. Saw it with The Wire. And unless you're a badass of Omar Little proportions, a great deal of the audience won't make concessions for a gay character. Tragic, really.

This is purely speculation on my part but I'm guessing, her ex-hubby may be the one. The way he so coolly executed his longtime friend gives me reason to believe that perhaps he could be at the center of a few more dirty dealings but just has proven too slippery to have been caught.

This was a great premiere! There was so much being done to hook the viewers for the next installment. I find myself very drawn to the character of Andre. Not only is he sexy (I love his lips) but there's a potential story there with him that intrigues me. Could he indeed have some mental illness requiring medication? Perhaps a split personality?

    • Ted has been icky and giving off bad guy vibe from the first moment I saw him. I have a sensor for that and it was beeping! So...don't put all the blame on Silkpress. The woman needs a good psychiatrist, true... but Leslie is just one of the skeletons in HIS closet. Ted is even a bigger monster, because he's hidden.  IT WAS A PERFECT REVEAL. Perfect, because in the beginning of the show... Dani was envying her sister's marriage... In these first few messy weeks... her own misery and life spiraling was contrasted to the picture-perfect marriage Nicole and Ted seemed to have. (on first glance). What happened now... is very very smart writing. THIS IS THE MOMENT THE MASKS ARE FALLING! The message it delivers to me is this. It says - no matter how things look... they are not what they seem. You can't judge a marriage by how it appears to be. Aaaand in the long run... maybe the messiest-looking people (Dani Dupree, I'm talking about you!) HAVE less issues and problems than the ones that seem to have it all. The ones with the MOST skeletons in the closets and the dirty pasts.   It was an AHA moment for the whole family and the viewers and a way forward for Dani and Nicole to bond even more and realize they are MORE alike than they are different. Now it will be quite a different dynamic, because Dani will have to SUPPORT someone and not be the one getting her wounds licked always. And also another lesson. Some men are dogs. Not all of them. But a lot of them are. The difference is... some can't be easily recognized. These creeps have put very impressive masks. The show is doing this perfectly. Beat by beat. Exploring classic soap opera themes and stories. Real-life characters and situations, that are relatable and make you think... Hmm... maybe I need to dig a little deeper next time I say "these people are perfect" or otherwise. Maybe I need to think MORE. That type of storytelling. It's not easy to do that.  Brava BTG.  B-R-A-V-A!
    • I speculate that Nicole will go through cycles of numbness/grief/rage.  At some point later on, regardless of DNA results (or faked results), whether there was a baby swap or not, I think Nicole will forgive Eva, and eventually love her someday.  Nicole will come to understand that Leslie gaslighted/manipulated Eva.  Nicole will be her loving self, although more guarded than before.   Just my thoughts.
    • Lol. That comment was just silly.  I feel like The Guiding Light started it when they made me love Roger Thorpe. Leslie is pussycat in comparison and there is a lot of story to go  for her and Eva.
    • Your posts continue to amuse me. I don't know anyone else who thinks Leslie and Eva should "hightail it out of town."  And listen, soaps have been FOR DECADES keeping around villains who we know would be jailed in real life. So is it crazy to think "they are just going to let this slide"? No. It's kind of hilarious to watch you take everything that happens on this show and distort it or lead me to think, "Huh???"
    • I can't even count the amount of magazine covers and photoshoots KKL has been in the past few months. Shame that the show is not mirroring the success she's having. It would have been so great to see both KKL and Brooke be on top.  I'm still holding a grudge that Brad rewrote the company take-over to a nothing... and then nulled Brooke to being a romance beggar again.
    • I'm also getting an error that I haven't seen before, but there's been a couple of different variations, so not going to worry about it for now.
    • Finally got to sit down and watch. Wow!  When LesDanLuAnn said to Ted, this your daughter. I started tearing up...... Eva got me.  I felt like I was watching a soap opera.

    • The drag was when Tad and Edmund went to Budapest (?) in 1997 to get Maddie back from Dimitri.
    • I know it's not happening but on the surface, there's nothing left for Leslie and Eva to do but to hightail it out of town, if they value their lives. Leslie has destroyed Ted's image, embarrassed and humiliated his wife and children, and unearthed the wrath of the entire Dupree family. She's crazier than I thought if she thinks they are just going to let this slide.
    • It will be amazing if we could record the skipped episodes. Did someone sent a list of the skipped youtube episodes to the guys that are filling in the gaps?
