AMC & OLTL Get Summer Run On OWN

I don't agree with you. There are plenty of people watching classic P&G soaps on YT and still wishing they could be brought back, before, during, and after PP's rise from the dead.

SoapClassics may have been unable to renew their licensing fee for GL and ATWT, but they were selling pretty well on practically word of mouth alone.

P&G needs to get with the program. If they don't want to partner up with some online media outlet, why not just sell the rights? It's being proven every day that there's still an audience, you only need to know where to look to find it.

To be fair, I don't have OWN so I don't know what their standards are. I'm assuming that they are the same as most basic cable. I'm not going to berate PP or OWN for that. After all, it's not like Showtime was an option. I think the ABC shows were PG and original flavor PP was a soft R. I think now what we'll have is a PG-13 basically something slightly harder than an episode of L&O:SVU and that's okay with me as long as they don't soften up the sex or the willingness to be a little more raw in other areas, Hunter's nasty little drawing in today's episode is a good example or the scene when Zach was clicking through the porn site. Neither of those things would've made it on a network.

Another difference for me is that the "edgy" content isn't exploitative of just the women. On the networks, you can call a woman a bitch or whore a million times in one episode but at most the only thing you could call a man was a sonofabitch or a bastard and both of those words are more about the mother. You couldn't dare call the man a dick or an as$hole. It's interesting to me that The Prudes had no problem with the word "bitch" being thrown around every day but AJ saying "s-hit" was too much for their delicate sensibilities.

Hell yes! I'm ridiculously behind, but I will keep up with the iTunes episodes and OWN episodes as much as I can. Watching online was never a problem for me, but there's nothing like watching AMC on TV at noon. Nothing!

And yes, I will need for AJ's filthy mouth and Peter's clean body to be present.

It is strange... For some reason I thought the break would be an hour and she would sandwich Haves and Have Nots there (as much as I hate the show--though it transfixes me--it obviously showed Oprah and her execs a way to save their network) but I am probably d runk because there are and wont be for a long time enough repeats. Airing one at one and one at two (their old time slots) would make more sense even if there would still be a gap it wouldn't risk having people tune out as much.

As for the P&G soaps--its funny reading soap press from the 70s who seemedto resent AMC and OLTL as not true soap operas. That said, I have a lot of affection for the shows, but I think fans need towait at least one year and see how these reboots have done before resenting that their soaps have not been picked up

I do agree that scheduling it near her new Tyler Perry soap would be good- is that a daily or weekly thing? Maybe she could rerun the soaps with it on weekends? I'm convinced the 2 pm thing was not a possibility because that is where GH airs in many markets and something in ABC's licensing agreement bars them from direct competition. I would be floored if ABC's legal team didn't make that a clause in their agreement.

I should also mention that the timeslots are flawless for me. When I'm able to, I can so make a somewhat full soap afternoon block out of AMC, B&B, DAYS, and OLTL with no gaps in between. Of course, that's always an option with online viewing, but again, call me old school, but nothing beats seeing it on TV.

I was raised on PGP soaps and I honestly don't resent AMC/OLTL for getting their shows back. In fact, I only started watching a few years ago, slightly before ATWT got cancelled. Specifically to support some of the remaining on air shows. Or at least try because hoenstly, I'm not home half the time except to watch online and record shows.

I bear no illusions that ATWT nor GL will return. I'd simply settle for the chance to buy/stream some classic episodes again.

Yeah, for fun I imagine how I'd rewrite a resurrected ATWT (I'd probably ignore most aspects of the last decade of the show) but I don't expect that to happen.

I decided to try to support these shows even though I grew up watching CBS daytime dramas because I like the aspect that these shows just might be able change some of the perceptions about soaps, what they're able to be, and the strength (or perceived lack thereof) of the audience. I'd also like for these shows both online and on air to challenge each other and raise their standards in terms of writing, acting, etc.

These shows are not necessarily competing anymore, and AMC/OLTL are not competing with other shows just their own efforts to improve.

Okay, that's the last I'll mention PGP soaps in an AMC/OLTL thread.

I think sandwiching other programming between AMC and OLTL is a mistake. I've always been of the opinion that these shows are stronger as a pair, whether you can take or leave one or the other. I think the potential lure of the second program is important for a newer fan who may be initially drawn to just one. I wouldn't split up Green Acres and Petticoat Junction with a block of Family Matters, but what do I know, maybe they figure viewers need a break between all that soapiness. I'll be tickled if they actually plan to sandwich a Tyler Perry soap between the two to "ensure its success" like Agnes Nixon wanted to do with her Loving.

Thank you. My nose didn't go all out of shape, when Oprah initially passed on bringing AMC and OLTL onto her network. During that time period, we had lost Guiding Light and As The World Turns, within a year of each other and then ABCD chose to cancel both a AMC and OLTL.

Why would Oprah rightfully put money into something that initially wouldn't have made an impact on her next work.

She needed proof that a soap would work on her network, without it being a major screwup.

Tyler Perry was able to give Oprah the reality that soaps can dream about tonight.

I truly believe that someday, GL and EON in particular make very good bets for returns and revamps a la OLTL and AMC if P&G ever chooses to loosen the reins. I've said that many times, and I'd be happy to talk about it - I disagree with Carl/DRW that it's off-topic. I think if these shows make it on OWN - and though I suspect they have an admittedly low bar to clear, I will likely be DVR'ing it again to help with the numbers - then other shows are definitely something to consider.

Analogies like this one are why you are needed here kthxbye

But I totally agree. I'd be more apt to watch OLTL if it was directly following AMC (especially at 30 minutes an episode). I always said a cable deal should be based on selling the shows as an hour-long block that can be dropped anywhere for two hours a day. The traditional afternoon airing and a later airing (early evening or late night).

    • Annnnd it's time!!!   Oooo more developing of the Anita story.   Bill and these hand moments.   OOOOOOOOO...it's a Jazmen episode!!!   So Nicole is hitting the anger part of her grief, I see.    Hehe. TIDE sighting!!
    • -- Kai spends more time in the hospital than anyone I know. I've never seen a patient held back from being discharged like this guy. -- All this concern over Lulu's adoption story is wild. Just what in the hell in that story will upset people? Am I missing something?
    • Except she was the last to know yesterday
    • While I'm waiting for the new episode to start...let's talk about yesterday's episode.   I honestly really loved it. THIS is what I mean when I talk about how there should be an A story that is dealing with its fallout while the next A story is being built. And then there was even a C plot going on.    The fallout from the Silk Press Sheila/Eva reveal continued. And there were so many elements in play. Beats were being played. And I loved every moment of it. Ted/Eva defiantly going to the country club and being more successful at it than Bill&Hayley. I love that Ted is willing to fight for his marriage. I really want to see where it goes. I didn't like the town gossip, cuz we already have one in Nosy Nurse, but she did keep the tension up. The Nicole/Dani dynamic as sisters being in play...and I'll be in the minority and say that while Dani was Dani, I didn't find her being self-absorbed at all in those scenes. She has already been established as being willing to go there. For herself. AND her sister. So her going in on Ted and Eva was like her. Her dragging her sister out of the house was also like her. No problems. And I can't say how much I loved Jan getting her moment with Silk Press Sheila. Not to mention how much I LOOOOOOVE the showdown between SilkPress and Eva at Orpheny Gene in front of everybody!!!! Giving old school soap. And SilkPress's warning she got more up her sleeve (with a snap) was delicious. And awww at Martin comforting Eva. Kat ain't going to like that.   Speaking of Martin...IT'S HAPPPPENIIIIINGGGGGG!!! Now we are getting words from the night in question. So good to see them FINALLY building out that OTHER A story they started. And good on Martin for backing out from the presidency. I already said I love that the writers found a plausible reason for him to back out. The plot point served its purpose...to get a sense of Martin's personality. Now that he's been built up so we know what to expect from him, no need for it. Moreso since SilkPress's presence will continue to trigger that secret right out of him. Fingers crossed.   And while all that goodness was going on...we got a B plot in the form of Doug/Joey/Vanessa. I like it. It's been allowed to grow. All POVs have been seen except for Joey's really. So seeing him put Doug on the hook officially (so this should be climaxing by end of May then since Doug has one week?) because he wants Doug to move money through Vanessa's business. I continue to wonder where it will go now that I know (and apparently missed it) what Joey's endgame is. I mean...will Doug do it? Will Joey get payback on Vanessa? Or will Vanessa fall into Joey's bed? I feel the show has done a good job developing Doug and Vanessa enough that I am invested in the story. Sidenote...ask and I shall receive aka Dani/Vanessa brief moment at the country club. I really miss them together.    As for the C plot...well...I'm in the minority as well. I actually liked the Ashley/Derek scenes. Not cuz the typical soap himbo scenes...lol...but it was just a nice counterpoint from the other stories going on. And it was just nice to have an episode with A, B, and C stories going on and NOT be jarring and ALSO no quick cuts to another scene. It FLOWED. I actually like Ashley and while her last appearances in solo Derek scenes were DOA, I felt there was more going on. At least this time. It was building on what was already growing...Ashley's annoyance at Derek moving in. Derek...being a typical guy. I am hoping that will go somewhere. And I love that we got another Jan/Ashley scene. At the moment, it's the only thing giving us a clue to Ashley's inner life. That said...I really do want to see her out of her story bubble. There's so much potential with her and her career as a nurse. Moreso given what's going on there.    As for the mysterious stranger...well...I wonder how they are going to play it. Since most of us (but not all so not discussing it farther) know a bit about him.    As for the coda...it is bittersweet now knowing it was Maurice's last scenes. I mean...what do you all think? A nice point for him to stop? We got to see Eva accepting by the father she always wanted to be with since Day 1. Nicole looks on. Quite soapy.
    • I love the thought of Eva becoming this huge celebrity hairstylist, and the future character crossover that can happen with fun cameos, too.
    • I assume the target audience is as distracted as I am by the plot hole that University Hospital does not own a means of production for Versavix, and that's where the profits are found. Researchers at publicly funded universities can profit from successful drug discoveries, but it is often a small percentage compared to the profits of the pharmaceutical company.  Thus, it makes no sense why both Xander and EJ would try to buy the hospital (and its right to the invention).  As opposed to buying a pharmaceutical company, which would make exponentially more profit from Versavix, as well as the many patents that they now own on Dr. Rolf's research!   And, that if Xander benefitted from his wife's knowledge about a drug being researched at her hospital, and one day later he made a bid for said hospital, that's called fraud as it is akin to insider trading. For example, if my husband was a real estate agent, and he told me to buy this undervalued property because he knew there was a $1,000,000 diamond buried under the toilet.  That would be fraud, because his duty would be to get the best price for his client.  But, if he would directly profit, because as my husband he would get half of the profits from the diamond, that's fraud.  And that's what Sarah did. She waited until the hospital was worth nothing to tell her husband to buy now for cheap, because it will be worth a fortune in future because of the drug. Thus, she profits from the University's misfortune.  And once again, Sarah is the true evil mastermind of Salem.

    • Some other thoughts on today's show. I don't care for Bill/Hayley as a couple. I think that Bill is sexy and looked good on today's show. But I don't think that him and Hayley really have any chemistry. They seem mostly isolated on the show unless someone like Dani is sparring with one of them. I do wonder what is going on with Bill's hand and why it is trembling. He is trying to keep that from Hayley. I also don't care for June right now. I like Jacob/Naomi but would rather see them do something else than what they are currently doing with June right now.  I liked Nicole/Dani continuing to support one another after the fallout from their marriages. I think it's interesting that Nicole asked Dani if something was going on between her and Andre and Dani lied about it. I do wonder if Dani/Andre are starting to have stronger feelings for each other (maybe even falling for each other a little bit). It does seem like stronger feelings are developing between them and I wonder where that may lead for their storyline. And I enjoyed Anita/Vernon as well. I like that he supports her and wants her to do the reunion with the Articulettes. It does seem like at one of them really doesn't want much to do with her after she reached out on today's show. But maybe they will reunite and there will be drama between her and her bandmates. I am interested in seeing who the show may cast as her bandmates. I hope they get a couple of good actresses in the role.
    • Looks like the Townhouse to me, I've been calling it Paulina's Townhouse (which Marlena and Kayla also use).
    • Angela Bassett was also on somewhere in 1985 wasn't she. The NY soaps did so much for struggling actors. That's one of the reasons I will never stop hoping we get more of them.
