Going to Canada is ridiculous, but shooting a soap in a business-friendly state is a good idea. CA & NY are probably the two most expensive states in which to do business, and NJ & CT aren't cheap, either. The South has grown in population over the past 20 years in part because so many businesses have re-located there. (And two big reasons why businesses choose to re-locate there are because taxes are lower and unions are less powerful.) Wilmington, NC has huge studio facilities, and I'm sure there are also plenty of options available in FL, GA, and TX.

Agreed. There are so many cities here in the States that would bend over backwards for the money a TV show would bring to their economy. Baltimore was home to Homicide and The Wire. Leverage shoots in Portland, Oregon and the showrunners for all those shows mentioned that in addition to the cost savings they found some amazing local talent to work on the shows too.

The more we hear about PP, the more they sound like incompetent snake oil salesmen who did too much cocaine one night and decided to buy themselves a couple of soap operas.

I'm sure the hooker whose ass they snorted off of was laughing the whole time, too.

As far as I am concerned people like prospect park and frons are just typical of corporate america today.

Frons

- Is a yes man to his bosses

- Spews off BS he knows nothing about thinking it makes him sound intelligent

- Thinks his "customers" and employees are stupid

- Promotes who he likes versus who should be

- Micromanages and does not let people do their jobs

Prospect Park

- Clueless and empty promises of greatness

- Bought something thinking they knew it all and could make a quick buck

- Did not do due dilligence

- Tried to pass the blame of their failures on others

- Screwed over potential employees

They are representative of why people are on Wall Street protesting

I want to know what management programs like those at Stanford or Northwestern are teaching their students today in terms of good business and effective management

You'd think that, and in many cases that may be true, but I know there have been uphill battles for the Maryland film industry for instance. The state did not want to provide enticing tax incentives for Hollywood, and this was after the recent success of The Wire. Winning back HBO for Julia Louis-Dreyfus' new series Veep was a major victory.

Plus, there are practical issues that sometimes get in the way. For example, *of course* John Waters wanted to produce the film of Hairspray the musical in is home town of Baltimore, but there were no adequate sound stages (they all had obtrusive beams that got in the way of the very open shooting space the film required). So they had no choice but to look elsewhere, and ended up in Canada.

Both. Ha ha.

Seriously, if Canadian production companies wants to produce soap operas, thats cool, but I think it's a silly idea for American productions companies to produce American soaps in another country. Shouldn't those jobs stay here, especially if they're producing shows 52 weeks a year?

Those jobs didn't need to stay in the US when it was cheaper to produce a show in Canada. Now, that used to be the case years ago...the Canadian dollar, however, is now at par or has a higher value than the US dollar depending on the day, so it doesn't make financial sense anymore.

You also have to go where there's a healthy enough creative community to make your locally produced film/TV show viable. In D.C./Baltimore for example, there is no shortage of camera, lighting, makeup/hair, et cetera, professionals as well as acting talent (the theatre community being only second to NY, taking the spot Chicago held for years). Contractually, these shows have to utilize a certain number of local talent, so they can't just go *anywhere*.

I can't go along with linking Frons and ABC executives' cancelling television shows with the very real serious issues that the Occupiers are protesting.

Thank you John for sharing Walt's blog. I agree with much of it, and some of us have been saying this for years the model for network television being based on real time viewing is a mess. Unless it is a live event, most people won't be watching while the program is original on due to life.

Does anyone else watch Hot In Cleveland? I heard they dissed The Talk/The Chew so I watched the episode. LOL they had the soap star on their show, Victoria, get invited to New York for an appearance on "The Chatter," a morning show rip off of "The View." In the episode she's invited to, they're profiling stars from soap operas canceled to make way for "The Chatter." One of the co-hosts of the show said "Welcome to soap opera week where were going to be talking to all of your favorite stars who's shows have been canceled for this show." lol

Kathy Lee guest starred and was clearly game for anything.

Love it! Can't wait to see La Lucci again.

I loved that bit on Hot in Cleveland. Too funny. I can't wait to see Susan Lucci again. I kind of hope they cast some more AMC people as former co-stars of Victoria from "The Edge of Tomorrow"

Ive never seen Vasi take an awful picture but man did SID pick a bad shot of her to put on their site.

ALL MY CHILDREN alumna Denise Vasi (Randi) has a new primetime gig! Deadline reports that the actress has been cast as a new lead on the second season of VH1's hourlong scripted comedy series SINGLE LADIES, to fill the void left by the departure of Stacey Dash. Vasi will play Raquel, a savvy businesswoman from a prominent Southern family who is a good friend of LisaRaye McCoy's Keisha. Charity Shea rounds out the group as the third lead, April. "Denise is the perfect addition to the SINGLE LADIES cast," says executive producer Queen Latifah. "She is bringing a fun, new element to the show." Season 2 will begin production in Atlanta in January, to premiere in early summer.

I guess she got tired of the waiting game which didnt pan out. Good for her but as mentioned in the SL thread, I hope she got some lessons on how to act if she's going to be playing lead

Oh snap! AMC's Denise Vasi didn't have trouble finding work post AMC. She is joining one of my favorite new shows from this year, Single Ladies on Vh1, replacing the lead Actress (who I LOVED!). OMG. DV was mostly terrible on AMC, I am shuddering thinking how this will turn out. Good for her though! I will be watching the premiere next year ;-O Wouldn't it have been awesome if Shannon Kane got the role instead?

No, because that would've meant she wouldn't be available for that "Good Wife"-meets-"Damages" drama series on BET (I hope, I hope, I hope).
