GH: Classic Thread

As I said a few months back in here, the episodes were so dour that they were hilarious. But also very worth watching! I'm glad there's more here. Incidentally, MST is in another hiatus period atm but they've recently done many more shorts again; if they ever somehow got access to public domain soaps again I'd love to see it.

I haven't seen those in years. I remember laughing at some of the content but looking back I feel bad that they would make horrified/disgusted noises any time Emily McLaughlin would come onscreen (I think it was her).

They weren't particularly kind to Lucille Wall and her voice either.  In Wall's case, however, it's really not her fault.  The quality of whatever videotape they had access to for the segment distorted her voice something awful.

I'm grateful for what we have of '60s and '70s GH but most of the time the quality is very rough.

I'd forgotten they went in on Lucille too.

Watching some bits of these episodes and having Lucille saying Audrey just needs to get over her miscarriage, having Steve belittle someone who had committed suicide or was about to do so, etc. reminds me of how rigid GH feels in morality and tone compared to where ABC soaps were heading at this time.

It is interesting to think how much those early episodes and years were quite dour. In one of the most recently uploaded episodes I saw the slightest smile on Jessie’s face, and it had to be the first time I ever saw her close to smiling. I bet early Audrey was a breath of fresh air, because she is much lighter before they start piling on the tragedy to her too. Lee Baldwin too- he has such different energy compared to Doctors Hardy and Phil Brewer.

I know amongst original fans, many felt Jessie and Steve should have been together, and never were. EM certainly played a deep affection for Steve in many scenes I have seen of them together.

Those dour early years almost make the miserable JFP/Guza years seem like they were no so out of character. Almost.

I think the Hursleys realized that there was entirely too much angst at times, and that was why the hilarious constant bickering between Lucille and Sharon was thrown in.  Young and pleasant Sharon had a knack for getting in Lucille's way or saying just the thing to work on poor Lucille's last nerve.  Amy Vining provided a similar light touch later, but there really isn't anything like that today.

I am sure you and I have discussed this before, but I still wonder what the canvas would have looked like if Rosalind Cash had lived longer.   I have a tough time envisioning the Wards in Guza era GH, but I have to imagine they would have had a greater impact.

If Tommy and Simone hadn't been shrugged off the show would have had more building blocks in place all the way back to the '90s.

I imagine she would have had a big involvement in Damian's murder story. After that she probably would have been written out early in Guza's second run, like Keesha. I'm just sorry we never got to see more of Rosalind Cash as she was such a legend.

Rosalind Cash was wonderful on GH. A year or so ago I rewatched a Luke & Laura playlist from the beginning of their return. The story for the Wards was so carefully laid out, starting with Laura walking into a clearing and seeing their old family home. Her imagining the family that lived there, right up to finding Bradley’s remains and the affair reveal. It felt like those characters had been there longer than they were, they fit so well.

I also think what Guza did with Damian’s murder was a good idea. Edward protecting Justus, who went along partly for ego for himself and his family name, was a good story. That whole story is fun to watch, the murder, the memorial, and Laura in jail and on trial.

The story with Justus just didn’t go anywhere after that. Much like Tony going psycho kidnapping Michael and Robin and no rebuilding his life after.

I wish I could find that hospital scene with Mac and Stone. Stone is crying and Mac hugs him, like a spell breaking his anger at him up for good in that moment.

The initial story of Justus working with the mob, spurning everything that had been taught to him, could have had potential, with the Quartermaines as well as the triangle with legal eagle Dara and cop Taggert. As you said, they just didn't care. Someone also decided that Joseph C. Philips was wrong for who Justus now was, and brought in Monti Sharp, who, similar to his brief ATWT run, seemed to have lost most of what made him special on GL and just seemed slimy. I wasn't surprised he was only on for a short time.

I don't even know what they did with the last Justus, beyond being a monk and being killed.

    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
    • Other than hanging out with Liz, all of Lucky's stories have been stalled out or dropped; the relationship with his son; his wanderlust. He hasn't been involved in any of the action/adventure or con artist stuff. I don't think he's even had a scene with Sidwell since the latter came to town. He's a real after thought. I doubt he's long for the show.

    • I started a separate thread for the same tribute, but of course it can be discussed wherever. doesn't matter where. Fyi  Jason Cook, Staci Greason, and Eileen Davidson will be there as well as Reckell and some of the current cast Thread for Live tribute to Drake https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/68987-days-currentformer-actors-live-video-tribute-for-drake-hogestyn
    • Seeing Nicole and Martin together reminds me of watching Alice with Mickey Horton in the 90s and 00s. The seem more like peers than mother and son.  The younger half of the cast (35ish and below) is playing younger, and the older half (35+) is playing older.
