Dorothy Green (Jennifer Brooks) was not a happy camper.

In an interview from August 77,shortly before she was killed off she claimed the older women on Y&R were written as victims - she sited Liz Foster as having a stroke, KayChancellor - rich but lonely and an alcoholic and Vanessa Prentiss, scarred and living as a recluse.

The message according to Ms Green is that 'you've reared your children, now you're finished'.She claimed fans she meets in that age group agree with her and that these women are not shown to be doing anything positive with their lives.

She said the men on the show are treated differently eg Stuart, who hasn't done a thing wrong in 5 years.

She does sound bitter, but I can't argue that she's wrong......I know Y&R has a history of "strong" woman, but in some ways I always feel like men had to always rule out over the women as far as Bell was concern.....

The thing with Y&R women at the show's peak wasn't that they were strong, it's that they were complex and fascinating - glittering, jagged edges. You look at Katherine during the blackmail photos story - she's absolutely pathetic. A bitter failure drowning herself in booze and revenge to try to recapture what she never had. This was riveting to watch. When Katherine was "strong" in later years, she was often boring and forgettable outside of Jeanne's performance.

Of course you can write strong women who are also complex and tragic, and I do think he did this with Liz.

I don't think Bill Bell was the greatest writer ever for women, and I imagine in 1977, compared to shows like Ryan's Hope, or the other ABC soaps, or Guiding Light, his women may have seemed antiquated, but it's just that he was a very stylized writer.

I tend to wonder if she felt that way because Jennifer was consistently written as the family burden.

And where she says Stuart hasn't done anything wrong, the men were also window dressing from what I've seen of those days. The women absolutely carried the show while the men were basically props to help further their stories.

Jeanne Cooper causing an all female brawl to happen in a scene from the 1962 movie "House of Women" along with Connie Ford....

guess we know how she was able to tolerate all those catfights with Jill...haha

Beth Maitland is really beautiful. Only in a soap world would that be considered the "ugly duckling." Granted, the show often styled her to look dumpy and BM played Traci's insecurities to the hilt, but she's really gorgeous there, even with the unbelievably smokin' Don Diamont in her midst.

Thanks for the posts. The Jill/Dina scene is priceless. I wonder if Jerry Douglas and Brenda were getting along behind the scenes at this point ?

Jill v Dina is so much fun. I think I have Brenda Dickson's first scene back & it was with Dina. I'll try to get around to posting it one day when I finally get a new computer.

God rest Michelle Thomas...taken away too young.

She sort of reminds me of Mishael Morgan in that picture....it's sad looking at that photo knowing her time was running out :(
