All those old SOD articles from the 90s make me sad. Thanks for posting those! :) One of my favorite forgotten ATWT stories from the '90s was the Janice Maxwell story. Deliciously psycho!

Connie Wilson if I recall right was James Stenbeck's mistress who then ended up being murdered. Other than that fact I don't know. Was she related to Sandy Wilson?

I really wish Betsy Stewart had been brought back in the 90s permanently.

Thanks for reading them, and answering my question.

I LOVED Janice! She was a great psycho, and Holly Cate was so good. It helped that she hated Lily and at the time I wasn't a big fan either.

I have a short interview with her in one of the Digests. I'll post it when I can find it.

This appeared in the 6/16/99 issue of Soap Opera News about Goutman's impending arrival. Though I don't necessarily agree with the writer's perceptions of ATWT at the time, I can somewhat relate as who had mixed feelings at the time--one being sorrow over AW's cancellation, the other being the rumored uproar of "AW taking over ATWT" with the crossovers of Jake and Vicky as well as (very briefly) Cass and Lila in addition to ATWT moving into AW's old studios, not to mention Goutman and Laiman going from AW to ATWT as well.

Hmm...not too sure on those. From what I saw of FMB's last year, there was generally not a lot of good acting from most of the more recent hires. The ratings were up, but FMB was a demo casualty.

They were right about the vets not being used, although thankfully at least Liz came back...she sat around for a decade before finally being used again, but at least she was there. I never understood why she was run off that way under FMB. I think that was the glaring example of FMB not really getting ATWT.

August 25, 1987 Digest (Network Publishing Co.). Cover/interview with Bill Fichtner (also on the cover is the underrated Lindsay Frost -- still wish ATWT had kept her around, Betsy was a very important part of the Oakdale fabric).

Sheila was the maid and possible love interest for Tom,but when the Dobsons arrived,I think some past with Steve was created but then she was dropped.

Doug was involved with Annie and his estranged wife Marcia had a past with Dr Jeff Ward, who also had designs on Annie. So a Doug/Annie/Jeff/Marcia story played out thru 79.

Thanks. I couldn't remember which was to be paired with Tom. Was Sheila in prison at one point or was that Marcia?

That quad sounds like something the Dobsons would have done, but apparently they weren't into it.

I have an interview with the woman who played Marcia, I'll try to post it in a few days.

I adore the funky groovy 1976 As the World Turns logo. Over the last decade, with retro so in style, Goutman would have been smart to use a modified version of this for the show's title card. Young people would have seen it as fresh, funky and older fans would have had acid trip flash backs. ATWT had such a rich history but Goutman never brought back any blasts from the past or even their children. Fans are forgiving when it comes to recasts and there was so much potential in the show's history. I never realized how radically Marland revamped the show and, in the process, eliminated characters and entire families. I would have rather watched an extended Stuart family or even the McColls as opposed to the sappy Snyder clan.

I agree with you about the Stewarts, but I don't think Marland had much to do with eliminating the McColls. Diana was gone by the time he took over. They asked Cris Leblanc to stay on as Kirk but he said no. Whit was long gone. That only left Jay and Brian, and neither one of them were that interesting.

    • Beth #1 being recast right before she and Eric come face to face was jarring.  We spent the first 50 episodes or so getting to know Beth and see her rapport with her kids, co worker, and even her mother in law. Her Beth seemed content with her kids and job as caterer, but you could tell she also had a faraway look that you just knew meant that she dreamed of what life would have been like had she and Eric gotten together.   Plus, she came across as someone that you could see eventually moving into more wealthy circles based on her demeanor.   Seeing Beth always looking off into space probably helped fuel Brooke's dreams of wealth because she saw how unfulfilled her mother was.  Once Beth was recast starting in episode 52, that whole vibe completely changed and Beth #2 seemed to almost like living the middle class life.. and that her Beth would feel ill at ease around wealth, etc.
    • I agree.  I've always chalked it up to the fact that DALLAS had been a pop culture phenomenon for many years and that viewers, including viewers who'd stop watching years before, were tuning in one last time to say goodbye. Also agree that it was interesting to see KL finish 27th for the week.  Any show doing that well after 12 seasons is a miracle, lol.
    • I don't know anything BTS, but your theory seems reasonable.
    • In comparison to Maurice Johnson, sure, but he's still... stiff AF. "Leaps and bounds" is a strong exaggeration as well. Watching him is like watching paint dry. I'd recast him next, ASAP.
    • Yes! Andre easily could have just been a hunk with no real depth (like Derek) but his character is rounding out very nicely.
    • They're contract; anyone in the opening is a contract player.
    • I was watching an episode last night and noticed that Pictionary is taped in Atlanta. It's just a walk for Chandler to the studios.

    • my vote goes to Eden (Belle)! She single handed carried that show on her back !! Best family will probably be The Dingles! I have to say 2024-2025 was a mixed bag on all of them soaps ! But if I had to say which one would be the best I would give it to Emmerdale for Belle/Tom’s storyarc. It went on for too long but at least was written properly compared to others. But I do think Corrie will win best soap for Mason’s storyline  Best storyline… I wish it would be Belle and tom but the abuse story from Hollyoaks will take that 100%
    • I have to push back on this. I just don't believe it. I don't believe MVJ or anyone at BTG operates that way -- seeing a performance in reveal scenes and saying "That actor has to go." If that's the case, why aren't they doing that with other actors? We all know Maurice Johnson is FAR from the weakest actor on this soap. My feeling is that Keith Robinson became available and that someone from BTG wanted him badly from the beginning. I think this recasting was all about Robinson and not about Johnson at all. Yep, and anyone who can't see that isn't paying attention. Calling Brandon Claybon the worst actor on the show is laughable. Tomas, Ashley, and Derek might be recurring, but they're also key characters, so leaving them out of this actor discussion doesn't work. They get plenty of screen time and are on contract. The only way your narrative works about BC being the worst on the show is to ignore the rest of the cast.
