Also, I must say that I agree with Evan 100%: "Whoomp! (There It Is)" is an awful song while "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" is a great song.

Please note that this concludes the list of "Billboard's" #2 Pop Singles. The reason why the list stops here is because "Back at One" by Brian McKnight is the last song covered in "The 'Billboard' Book of No. 2 Singles." However, although the list is complete, please note that I am not finished saying all that I would like to say: in the coming days, I will print some lists that contain interesting information regarding #2 hits.

As I mentioned in my last post, I am going to share with you some interesting lists regarding the #2 singles. The first list is of the exact same songs that have peaked at #2 two different times, by two different artists. This has occurred twice, as shown below:

*Rockin' Robin--Bobby Day (2 weeks, 1958)

*Rockin' Robin--Michael Jackson (2 weeks, 1972)

*Last Kiss--J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers (1 week, 1964)

*Last Kiss--Pearl Jam (1 week, 1999)

Now, the songs above happened to be the exact same song covered by two different artists. Below is another list of songs, which went to #2 two different times, by two different artists. However, unlike the songs above, the songs in the list below are (each) two entirely different songs altogether: in other words, the only similiarity between each pair of songs below is that they have the exact same title.

*Fire--The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (1 week, 1968)

*Fire--The Pointer Sisters (2 weeks, 1979)

*Cherish--Kool & the Gang (3 weeks, 1985)

*Cherish--Madonna (2 weeks, 1989)

A more common occurrence than what is above is when a particular song peaked at #2 by one artist, and then--when the exact same song is performed by another artist--that song peaked at #1 the second time around. Believe it or not, this has happened seven times, as mentioned below:

*Young Love--Sonny James (#2 for 3 weeks, 1957)

*Young Love--Tab Hunter (#1 for 4 weeks, 1957)

*I Heard It Through the Grapevine--Gladys Knight & the Pips (#2 for 3 weeks, 1967)

*I Heard It Through the Grapevine--Marvin Gaye (#1 for 7 weeks, 1968)

*MacArthur Park--Richard Harris (#2 for 1 week, 1968)

*MacArthur Park--Donna Summer (#1 for 3 weeks, 1978)

*A Groovy Kind of Love--The Mindbenders (#2 for 2 weeks, 1966)

*A Groovy Kind of Love--Phil Collins (#1 for 2 weeks, 1988)

*Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me--Elton John (#2 for 2 weeks, 1974)

*Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me--George Michael/Elton John (#1 for 1 week, 1992)

*Can't Help Falling in Love--Elvis Presley (#2 for 1 week, 1962)

*Can't Help Falling in Love--UB40 (#1 for 7 weeks, 1993)

*The Girl Is Mine--Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney (#2 for 3 weeks, 1983)

*The Boy Is Mine--Brandy & Monica (#1 for 13 weeks, 1998)

(Note: These two songs listed above are the exact same song, despite the fact that the song's title underwent a gender change the second time around.)

Also, while not nearly as common as the situation above, the reverse situation has also occurred: that is, a particular song peaked at #1 by one artist, and then--when the exact same song is performed by another artist--that song peaked at #2 the second time around. This has happened twice, as mentioned below:

*Endless Love--Diana Ross & Lionel Richie (#1 for 9 weeks, 1981)

*Endless Love--Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey (#2 for 1 week, 1994)

*Total Eclipse of the Heart--Bonnie Tyler (#1 for 4 weeks, 1983)

*Total Eclipse of the Heart--Nicki French (#2 for 1 week, 1995)

OneLife Fan, you are very welcome. I am so glad that you are enjoying this thread.

This next list is of the singles that spent the most weeks at #2. Specifically, songs that spent 5 or more weeks at #2 will be mentioned below. While reaching #2 is quite an accomplishment, the artists of these songs must have felt frustrated that their songs spent so many weeks at #2 yet never spent a single week at #1.

10 weeks at #2:

*Waiting for a Girl Like You--Foreigner (1981)

9 weeks at #2 (each):

*I Love You Always Forever--Donna Lewis (1996)

*You're Still the One--Shania Twain (1998)

8 weeks at #2 (each):

*Little Darlin'--The Diamonds (1957)

*If I Ever Fall in Love--Shai (1992)

*Back at One--Brian McKnight (1999)

7 weeks at #2 (each):

*Whoomp! (There It Is)--Tag Team (1993)

*You Make Me Wanna...--Usher (1997)

*Nobody's Supposed to Be Here--Deborah Cox (1998)

6 weeks at #2 (each):

*Crazy Otto Medley--Johnny Maddox & the Rhythmasters (1955)

*Unchained Melody--Les Baxter, His Chorus, & Orchestra (1955)

*Ain't That a Shame--Pat Boone (1955)

*Moonglow and the Theme from "Picnic"--Morris Stoloff Conducting the Columbia Pictures Orchestra (1956)

*Green Door--Jim Lowe (1956)

*Return to Sender--Elvis Presley (1962)

*More Than I Can Say--Leo Sayer (1980)

*Rosanna--Toto (1982)

*Electric Avenue--Eddy Grant (1983)

*It's All Coming Back to Me Now--Celine Dion (1996)

Below is a list of artists that have had at least 3 #2 hits, as of the end of 1999. Note that the number of #2 hits that an artist had will be found after the dashes that follow each artist's name.

The Beatles--3

Blood, Sweat, & Tears--3

This next list is the polar opposite of the previous list. Here, artists who have had 3 or more #1 hits, yet never had a #2 hit, will be listed. Note that the number of #1 hits than an artist had will be found after the dashes that follow each artist's name.

Max, interesting stuff as always! You should get a job with Billboard Magazine, you'd be perfect for compiling those charts. :D

I prefer a lot of those #2 songs to some of the ones that beat them to the top spot on the charts. :D

Evan, thank you so much for your compliment. I wish I did work for "Billboard" Magazine! Also, like you, I perfer many of these #2 hits to the particular #1 hits that kept the #2 hits from reaching the top spot. It is really interesting, when looking back in hindsight, to discover that some great #2 hits were kept from reaching the top spot by #1 hits that were inferior in comparison.

OneLife Fan, I also agree that "I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis is a great song. Sadly, Lewis was a one-hit wonder.

Speaking of one-hit wonders, below is a list of #2 songs that were performed by one-hit wonders. Before you read the list, however, there are some things that need to be pointed out:

*In this post, a one-hit wonder is defined as an artist with only one top 40 hit. (And, this is the true definition of a one-hit wonder.) However, keep in mind that some people consider a one-hit wonder as an artist with just one big hit; in other words, these people consider artists with one major hit and another/some other minor top 40 hit(s) as one-hit wonders. Because of the distinction that I make, you will find that a lot of artists who you think are one-hit wonders are actually not; such artists did have another/some other minor top 40 hit(s).

*Note that some of these one-hit wonders may have had other singles that did well on other "Billboard" charts, such as the Country and R&B charts. However, these one-hit wonders only had one top 40 hit on the "Billboard" Pop chart.

*Note that some of these artists may have had several hit albums (on the albums chart). However, when it comes to singles, they had only one song reach the top 40 (on the Pop Singles chart).

*Some of the artists listed as one-hit wonders were only one-hit wonders as solo artists.

*There are several songs that were performed by two or more artists. In some cases, only one artist was a one-hit wonder, while the other(s) was (were) not. When instances like this occur, I will make a special note of it.

*One final note before I begin the list: note that this list is arranged in alphabetical order according to song title, and not according to the artists' names.

*All I Need--Jack Wagner (2 weeks, 1985)

*Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)--Deodato (1 week, 1973)

*Apache--Jorgen Ingmann & His Guitar (2 weeks, 1961)

*!@#$%^&*]--Meredith Brooks (4 weeks, 1997)

*Classical Gas--Mason Williams (2 weeks, 1968)

*Crazy Otto Medley--Johnny Maddox & the Rhythmasters (6 weeks, 1955)

*Daddy's Home--Shep & the Limelights (1 week, 1961)

*Do Anything--Natural Selection featuring Niki Haris (2 weeks, 1991) [Note: Only Haris is a one-hit wonder.]

*Don't Wanna Fall in Love--Jane Child (3 weeks, 1990)

*Dueling Banjos--Eric Weissberg & Steve Mandell (4 weeks, 1973)

*Easy Lover--Philip Bailey with Phil Collins (2 weeks, 1985) [Note: Only Bailey is a one-hit wonder. And, since Bailey had several top 40 hits as lead singer of Earth, Wind, & Fire, he is only a one-hit wonder as a "solo" artist.]

*Fire--The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (1 week, 1968)

*Float On--The Floaters (2 weeks, 1977)

*Friends and Lovers--Gloria Loring & Carl Anderson (2 weeks, 1986)

*Get a Job--The Silhouettes (4 weeks, 1958)

*The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly--Hugo Montenegro (1 week, 1968)

*He's Got the Whole World in His Hands--Laurie London (2 weeks, 1958)

*Hey There Lonely Girl--Eddie Holman (1 week, 1970)

*The Horse--Cliff Nobles & Co. (3 weeks, 1968)

*I Like It Like That, Part 1--Chris Kenner (3 weeks, 1961)

*I Love You Always Forever--Donna Lewis (9 weeks, 1996)

*I Wanna Be Rich--Calloway (1 week, 1990)

*Just the Two of Us--Grover Washington, Jr., with Bill Withers (3 weeks, 1981) [Note: Only Washington is a one-hit wonder.]

*Keep Your Hands to Yourself--The Georgia Satellites (1 week, 1987) [Note: Lead singer Dan Baird had another top 40 hit as a solo artist.]

*Last Kiss--J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers (1 week, 1964)

*Moonglow and the Theme from "Picnic"--Morris Stoloff Conducting the Columbia Pictures Orchestra (6 weeks, 1956)

*Mr. Big Stuff--Jean Knight (2 weeks, 1971)
