Im-n-a-whirl, I have never listened to Aretha Franklin's version of "Spanish Harlem," so thank you for telling me about it. However, I have heard Ben E. King's version of the song, which peaked at #10 in 1961.

213. Lyin' Eyes--The Eagles (2 weeks, November 8)

*(Note: The story as to whether or not John Denver's double sided record "Calypso"/"I'm Sorry" actually peaked at #2 is very confusing. When the record was initially released, "I'm Sorry" was the A-Side while "Calypso" was the B-Side. Then, this record peaked at #1 (for 1 week) on the week ending September 27, 1975. The following week, while "I'm Sorry" was still the A-Side, the record fell to #2. One week later, on October 11, 1975, the single's A and B Sides were officially switched, with "Calypso" as the A-Side and "I'm Sorry" as the B-Side. As mentioned above, this record remained at #2 for the week ending October 11, 1975 and stayed at #2 for another 3 weeks. Given all this information, I consider "Calypso"/"I'm Sorry" to have actually peaked at #1, instead of #2. However, I decided to include this record in this list because it was included in "The 'Billboard' Book of No. 2 Singles.")

Evan, I'm so glad that this thread is bringing back great memories for you!

Also, Evan, please forgive me for being so rude, but I wanted to correct something that you said. I'd like to point out that "Let's Hear It for the Boy" actually peaked at #1, and not #2. It's a good thing that this great song did go to #1, since it certainly deserved it. Once again, though, I sincerely apologize to you Evan if I have offended you in any way.

First of all, I am sorry that I have been away from this thread for so long, as I have been very busy lately.

Shawn, I sincerely apologize for being rude, but I am 100% sure that "Don't Dream It's Over" and "C'est La Vie" peaked at #2, and not #1. There are three different sources that back this up: "The 'Billboard' Book of #1 Hits," "The 'Billboard' Book of No. 2 Singles," and "The 'Billboard' Book of Top 40 Hits."

There are a couple of reasons as to why you might believe that both songs actually peaked at #1 instead of #2. First, the songs in this thread are those that peaked at #2 in America. Indeed, perhaps either song peaked at #1 in another country. Second, "Billboard" actually has many different charts. The chart that is the source for this list (beginning with the week ended August 4, 1958) is the "Hot 100" chart, which is considered the definitive American pop singles chart. Now, "Billboard" has other charts, such as the "Easy Listening" chart and "Alternative Rock" chart; however, a song's performance on one of these other charts is a separate matter from the definitive pop chart (the "Hot 100"). Yet, perhaps either of these songs went to #1 on another "Billboard" chart (other than the "Hot 100"), which could be the reason for this confusion.

I hope this explanation helps.

Shawn, I think I may have found the reason for this confusion. You mentioned that you have the CD collection of "Billboard" hits for the years 1985-1989. By chance, does that CD collection contain five CDs (one for each year) with ten songs on each CD? If the answer to this question is "yes," take a look at the CD for 1987. Are these the ten songs that are on the CD:

With Or Without You--U2

You Keep Me Hangin' On--Kim Wilde

C'est La Vie--Robbie Nevil

I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)--Aretha Franklin & George Michael

At This Moment--Billy Vera & The Beaters

I Heard A Rumour--Bananarama

Heaven Is A Place On Earth--Belinda Carlisle

Don't Dream It's Over--Crowded House

Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now--Starship

The Lady In Red--Chris De Burgh

If the answer to this second question is still "yes," then you might want to take a look at the front cover of the 1987 CD: check to see if the CD is titled "'Billboard' Top Hits 1987." If this is the case, then please note that not all of the songs on the CDs titled "'Billboard' Top Hits" are #1 songs; this would explain why "Don't Dream It's Over" and "C'est La Vie" are not #1 songs.

If, however, you have a completely different CD than the one I am referring to (such as a CD that specifically states "'Billboard Number One Hits 1987"), then I am afraid that I don't know what to tell you: indeed, in such a case, perhaps the CD is correct (in stating that "Don't Dream It's Over" and "C'est La Vie" made it to #1) and I (and the books that I use as my sources) am wrong. Again, I am sorry for the confusion.
