I read the KZ book when it was published.  I recall she acknowledged that the clone story was criticized but she appreciated the screen time; as being on screen seems the most important thing to her throughout the book.  She was also very sweet when discussing her marriage.

The oddest part, for me, is that she bookends the memoir with her DUI arrest.  She is honest about drinking and eating more toward the end of the series because she was very unhappy but then she goes to great pains to deny that she was an addict.  I thought it would end with a revelation about her drinking but she seems incapable of that degree of insight.

So, it is this odd mix of honesty without insight which makes for a subpar book.

I liked her book a lot. I did find her commentary on her drinking problem very candid - it's not for me to say if she was in denial about actually being an alcoholic. Not knowing the woman I can't make a judgment. She certainly didn't deny she had a problem.

I love Zimmer, but she definitely went through some trials and tribulations there from about 2005 onward through the show's end. I remember her late 2007 interview where she spoke quite happily about her 4000 calorie diet, flaunted her obesity and said her favorite meal is a double cheeseburger with bacon on two sugar powdered chocolate filled doughnuts with an extra large mountain dew to drink and fried Twinkies on the side. Which is sad because in the early '00's she had been on SlimFast commercials regularly and looked good. I'm glad she got better though when I've seen her in more recent appearances she looks much fitter and healthier than in those final days of GL.

Ho boy, I remember just about everyone here at SON including myself made quite the number of KZ fat jokes ten years ago, something to which we're all going to hell for lol.

I remember an interview where Zimmer said it was a combination of menopause, quitting smoking, and stress over the show that caused her weight to balloon.  The sad part was that the show dressed her quite badly when for years, Reva had been known for being a clothes horse.

Even though she was still heavy when she was on OLTL, the show dressed her in blazers and professional outfits that made her look less heavy then the crap GL put her in.

I re-read the GL anniversary book today.  The change from the 70's to the 80's on that show was extreme; suddenly everyone was from Tulsa rather than Europe.

1.  Dr Sara McIntyre (sp?) is totally one of those female characters that they don't write anymore.  A mature women who other female characters look to for advice but with a totally f'ed up private life.  AW's Pat, AMC's Anne, and ever Jesse Brewer come to mind; women who were bright and competent but kept impulsively falling for bad guys.  Sara married two different guys while on vacation (both tried to kill her) but everyone in town still went to her for marital advice.

2.  Justin Marler - cad or victim?  Today I learned that Justin had dated Sara (before Phillip was born) but jilted her for Jackie who was better for his career; which makes him a bit of cad.  Then, when I considered how often he played second fiddle to Mike and Alan I felt bad for him.  I wonder if his character changed to suit different writers?

3.  I liked the liberation of Elizabeth Spaulding, Jackie Marler and Trish Lewis.  However, Elizabeth and Hope both had (70's term) "drinking problems" that turned into full hysteria and required hospitalization?

4.  The wealth of the 70's seemed both more attainable and at the same time more exclusive.  Alan and Elizabeth are as rich doctors like Justin or Ed.  Their homes seem suburban not mansions.  They have household staff but it doesn't seems as stuffy as the Chamberlains.  At same time, Elizabeth never interacts with poor characters which is convenient for the plot because they can conspire about her in her absence.

5.  Hindsight is 20/20 but I don't see how a fan from 1977 who loved stories about Mike and Sara stayed with the show once they were completely sidelined.  Both had firmly established roots but they just left once they got an out of town job offer and were spoken of again, (OK I'm sure someone talked about Mike but Sara disappeared completely).

Episodes like this makes me miss Guiding Light so much.

It was so touching how Roger expressed having a teeny crush on Maureen and seeking her approval at times. God, I miss actors like Michael Zaslow on daytime.

Even when GL was starting to lose its flame at this time, it still was some of the most compelling drama on TV.

I loved how Blake felt part of the Bauer family there with Ed and thinking of Mo as a mother figure. I always thought Ross and a more mature Blake should have moved into the Bauer hours with their kids and formed the core...Ross was the dad of SF and LK's Blake always gave off a warm vibe..

God I hate Irizzary, and this is the fake Mindy...Marj hadn't started yet...the show really did loose its steam with the loss of Bev, Simms and Mo. Nice to see Jenna before she got sucked into the black hole of Buzz/Deas.

Hearing the song over the closing credits gives me all kind of feels.

It took me quite a few minutes to figure out that the actress on the screen was actually portraying Mindy! I don't remember her (I only remember Tesreau, Simms and Crampton) at all but that year I was busy with school, so it's possible that I didn't really watch that year until the summer and my viewing was probably inconsistent at best. She's not a bad actress but I think the biggest problem is the transformation of the character (seriously, skeet shooting??!) on top of an unfamiliar actress, just too jarring!

I enjoyed Alan-Michael talking about the Spaulding family legacy, while trying to draw Nick into becoming more invested in it.  As for Irizarry, normally I enjoy him in a lot of roles but this one rings a little hollow to me.

As a kid, I remember thinking how beautiful and graceful Jocelyn Seagrave was.

Kat and David, The Toni Braxton song playing in the background-- so perfectly 90s.  I love the energy of David when he's pitching the idea of him running Company to Ed. The Black characters that I see on soaps like Y&R are so staid and boring, it's refreshing to see a Black male character, in particular, being portrayed as being so full of enthusiasm and life!  And yes, it is possible to write that type of character without the criminal past!

Where is Amelia Marshall these days?  Just feels like there is a vacuum in today's daytime that she could easily fill.

Even though Julie was an annoying mess at times, Jocelyn Seagrave was very gorgeous. I did grow to like Julie once she dropped the saccharine act and was as ratchet as Bridget was.

And I miss Amelia Marshall on daytime too. Gilly has to be one of my top 5 fave soap characters b/c she was great representation for us young AA viewers, who watched the show at that time. I loved watching ambitious Gilly getting caught up in Roger and Holly's wild shenanigans at WSPR. Those were good times. She wasn't isolated. She wasn't the Black best friend. She wasn't saccharine. Gilly has just as much of a colorful past as the rest of the canvas. God I miss Gilly.

Sadly, Blake would be removed from the Bauers in due time. I found it disheartening in later years that they erased Blake being an honorary Bauer. They should've kept that connection with her by having her interact with Michelle and Rick.

And I really don't get the hate for Nick.

I liked Nick/Mindy (Kimberly Simms version of course). He could be a bit righteous at times, but he was enjoyable for the most part.

    • I just got to the first set of Dante ranting at Gio episodes and I really need him to shut the hell up. Gio literally was at the party with people his own age and didn’t even know Dante’s kid snuck out to a party. Talking about I could charge you for serving a minor? This is just really stupid writing.
    • Back up a bit. Susan & Julie were best friends. Tom thought David too old for Julie & forbade her to see him. They continued but they had to sneak around . So they couldn't always get together. One of THOSE nights David got drunk. At the same time for different reasons Susan had a huge fight with her parents, slammed out the door & went & also got drunk. David & Susan comforted each other & things took their usual course Fron that one  drunken night, Susan got pregnant. The 3 made a joint decision. He would marry her to give the child his name & then they would divorce. Is it any wonder this did not go according to plan. Bill Bell wrote this.
    • All good @ChristosM, we appreciate you.  You’re awesome, thanks so much @rsclassicfanforever
    • Not having news about Tomas being recast is super disappointing. This triangle could be great if there was an actor with an actual pulse playing Tomas.    Leslie showing up at Nicole’s, I absolutely liiiive. AND this nasty heffa is gonna blame Eva for Laura’s accident

. All of the cast mixing and mingling today was great! I never imagined some of these cast members ever interacting.
    • Guiding Light 1976 continues... Dr. Joe Werner’s double load, covering Ed’s patients as well as his own, has taken its toll, and he’s having chest pains. Joe arranges for a checkup at another hospital and then confesses to Sarah that the results show he has angina pectoris and must slow down. Dr. Justin Marler arrives in Springfield to join the Cedars staff. His purpose is to organize improvements for the surgical-cardiac wing. He immediately disrupts the staff by giving a premature interview, saying the hospital needs much improvement.  Sarah tries to avoid Marler and is noticeably cool to him. They were in love while in medical school, but Marler broke with her to marry a girl whose money and social position could help his career. Since Marler has criticized him for cutting back on his patient hours, Joe once again picks up his pace. After performing emergency surgery, he collapses in the scrub room, a victim of cardiac arrest. Marler finds him, and his fast reactions save Joe’s  life. Sarah, learning of Marler’s efforts for Joe, expresses unlimited appreciation.Although he’s recovering well, Joe now fears for his future and insists upon revising his will. Sarah is frightened by his attitude, but Joe is adamant. Mike’s client, Ben McFarren, was wrongly convicted of a crime and was in prison for fifteen months. When Mike informs Ben he’s been exonerated, Ben, embittered by his imprisonment, blames Mike for his having been there in the first place. Ben, released, will have a professorship in art at the local college in the fall. He’s working temporarily at the hospital and at the Metro, and he meets Mike’s daughter, Hope.Ben and Hope hit it off well from the first and soon begin dating. Ben tells Hope she’s naive and innocent, but she wants him to think otherwise. However, Ben’s increasing ardor frightens Hope, and she finally insists she won’t be pressured into sleeping with him just to prove-she likes him and is with it. Ben retorts that she’s letting them both down and walks out. Hope visits his studio, hoping to make him understand that she’s torn between her desires and the way she was raised. Ben tells her he understands but makes it clear that it’s his terms or not at all. Hope, to help Ben out, offers to replace the nude model for his art class. When the moment comes, however, she can’t do it, and poses in a bikini. But a local gossip columnist exploits the incident, and Mike finds himself defending his daughter to all his friends. But when Mike discovers that Ben has sketched a nude of Hope, he questions her integrity, whether her denial was truthful. Hope is upset that she must defend her morality to her father. Mike also can’t help but wonder about Ben’s intentions toward Hope. Hope becomes confused, as Ben’s feelings for her seem to vary day by day. At one meeting he will be open and affectionate with her, at the next remote and cool. Finally Ben explains to her that this is the  first time in his life that he has someone he can trust, and he still occasionally can’t overcome his suspicions and fears of being hurt and withdraws. Unable to discuss this with her father, Hope confides the situation to Ann, who has helped her with advice and a listening post before. Ann is able to understand, as she can empathize with the problems of living through an unhappy and difficult life, something beyond Hope’s experience. She makes Hope see that Ben has found only betrayal in his life until now and he can’t help but be cautious. Hope soon discovers there’s a side to Ben she’s never seen before. When his boss at the Metro imposes on him unfairly and then rides him about being an ex con, Ben reacts with a rage that frightens Hope, but he manages to keep his control.. Ben realizes he overreacted when Hope remarks about his violent temper, but is surprised and deeply affected to see that she’s offering him support instead of castigation or rejection, when she defends him to Mike. This leads Ben to admit to Hope that he loves her.  But Mike is worried. He tells Hope that while he was defending Ben he looked into the young man’s background and found that he had a history of short temper and violent outbursts. And, based on what’s recently happened, Mike warns Hope that Ben has apparently not changed. Hope refuses to let Mike’s argument deter her; in fact, she asks Mike if it’s not possible that this very past just might be the best incentive Ben has to do differently in the future. Now that she has recovered from surgery, Mrs. Stapleton is eager to return home, but Evie is very upset by this news. She wants to stay in Springfield, particularly since she has just started dating Tim. Rita, understanding her sister’s wish not to return to the slow-paced small-town life she so recently left, convinces her mother to delay her departure, explaining that Evie stands a much better chance to plan her future here. Rita herself is delighted that Ed’s attentions now seem exclusively hers. Her helping him study for the neurology boards has paid off: He’s passed the state boards and can now begin his neurology practice. Rita has told her mother that Ed is the first man she has ever seriously considered sharing her future with, and her mother concludes that her daughter is finally. in love. Rita is eagerly anticipating a celebration dinner with Ed following the good news, but her happiness is shattered when she catches sight of a man in the corridor at Cedars whose presence forms ice around her heart. She is so shaken that Ed, coming upon her at the nurses’ station, is concerned and asks her what has happened. She cannot discuss this with him but is withdrawn and upset. And, indeed, her worst fears are realized when late at night, after Ed has left Malcolm Grainger shows up at her door. Grainger bitterly threatens to ruin Rita by exposing the truth about what she did in Texas to her family and all of Springfield. Rita thinks she has managed to stall him, for a day, and, assuming he has gone, she rushes to the Metro to tell Roger that Malcolm is in town. Rita and Roger are unaware that Grainger followed her and is standing outside the door of Roger’s office, listening to their conversation. Roger tells Rita he doesn’t want Grainger to know he is also in Springfield, and orders her to meet with Grainger.
    • So limited that he was on Dynasty and AMC.
    • Denise was the best thing about that otherwise ridiculous plotline. I wasn't familiar with her work on Days of Our Lives or General Hospital but I could see her warmth and charisma as Mary even though the Another World storyline was a bit lacking.
    • I don't know what else to say except we have lost another legend at a time when it feels like we are losing too many. I love that Denise Alexander never played Lesley as some perpetual victim, but as a woman and physician with integrity and backbone.  Rick and Monica made an absolute fool of her with their affair; yet, Lesley was someone who never made you pity her. Ladies and gentlemen, we aren't just losing veteran actors here.  We're also losing vital parts of this genre's legacy, and that just breaks my heart. God bless Ms. Alexander and her loved ones.  May she RIP.
    • Michael Nader was limited too?
