That might explain it. I forgot that other people on the show vote. Bernau was definitely respected by the cast, but I get the impression he wasn't beloved in a teddy bear kind of way. Like Bev, he was super-professional and didn't like to kid around on the set, which seemed to annoy KZ.

Also, by the 90s--2000s there were fewer shows and the ones that remained had smaller casts, so less competition.

According to RR's Wiki page, he was nominated 3 times. Maybe it's wrong, LOL.

As long as I don't see that Frankie D got nominated!!! Then I KNOW the barstools in Company could have gotten a nom.

IMDB has over a hundred appearances from Clarice Blackburn from 87-92 as Ethel Spurrier. Who was this character and just how prominent was she? Is this just someone getting carried away?

Neither her picture or her character's name ring a bell. I checked the soap hoppers thread; slick includes the designation or "Administrator", leading me to believe she was the hospital administrator after Maureen quit.

O.K., here's a topic to talk about:

How in the ever lovin' you know what did RR get THREE Emmy nominations and Bernau got ZERO?

I recently found this out and almost had a stroke.

I know one possible answer is that Bernau might not have submitted his name--the actors have to do that to be considered.

But still, how did Raines get THREE?

THAT'S INSANE!

No doubt a sign of the times. Bernau not only would've had stiffer competition, (there were at least 14 shows) and supporting wasn't a category until 1979.

As much criticism as we dish out, he only had to have one good episode to submit. His noms come in the '00s, when the likes of Shemar Moore won in supporting. (I mean, c'mon.) I'm a little more surprised Raines got a lead nom (the same year as Robert Newman, ), over Deas. Although it looks like Deas just stopped submitting.

Nope. Twice in supporting, once in lead.

If you need something happy to focus on, Jerry ver Dorn was nominated seven times in the '90's in supporting. lol.

Very strange. The face is familiar to me, maybe from.Dark Shadows.

I checked the SOD synopsis for '87, and can't didn't see the new administrator's name mentioned. That year, Phillip was poisoned, Alan had a heart attack, Marah underwent DNA testing, Johnny had cancer and Meredith brought Rick up on charges with the medical board (she dismissed them around Christmas.) So there was plenty of action around the hospital.

Bernau got ZERO?

The 1980s Lead Actor races were tough. Would Chris Bernau have been competitive against the likes of Larry Bryggman?

GL didn't get any Lead Actor nominations until MZ in 1992 and MZ got his long-awaited for Lead Actor Emmy in 1994.

IMO, hell yes.

He didn't have much competition in the late 1970s.

Absolutely. Up until around 1983, I think he had material to submit that would have been competitive with anyone. (Even though he was front burner a lot after his return, much of it was kind of awful).

Besides, I'm not talking about wins, only nominations. Looking at some of the people who snagged Best Actor nominations during the late 70s/early 80s, he certainly IMO was a better actor than Richard Shoberg or Nicholas Benedict (who I was kind trashing recently in another topic--NO idea he was ever nominated, that's almost as egregious as Raines being nominated).

Again, it's perfectly plausible that he didn't submit his name. I know Bev stopped doing it because she was frustrated about never winning. Some actors genuinely don't believe in competing with other actors.

I still think it's the biggest crime in Daytime Emmy history that BM was never nominated for her work on GL. She had four consecutive nominations for Another World (1977-1980) but maybe those losses soured her on submitting her name. The early 1990s Lead Actress races were rather weak and I think if BM got nominated 1991-1993 she might have gotten at least one win.

Très hilaire.

I once heard an old gay rumour, RUMOUR, that John Wesley Shipp hooked up with Jean LeClerc.

The name Schipp was well known around the inner suburbs where I lived. A bookie. Loan shark. His house was quite something. I am not saying there is any connection but his sons closely resemble John Wesley.

Also, 350 miles away in Mississauga Ontario, it is commonplace to find a Shipp-built home from 50 more or less years ago. I believe this has a direct connection to John Wesley Shipp.

Still laugh at Marler's Nola musical fantasies. With Shipp singing " Ship mates together, don't give up the SHIPP."

There were lots closeted actors back then. GL was a pretty gay show --Bernau, Shipp, Curt Dawson, who played Holly's boyfriend Peter Chapman, William Roerick, Geraldine Court, and the first actress who played Dinah, Jennifer Gatti. (Feel free to add if I missed anyone).

The P&G shows were the conservative shows and probably the actors had to do this kind of thing. I found a snippet of a People Magazine interview where Bernau claimed he had a couple of girlfriends. (The funny thing is, Don Stewart also made a big point of talking in interviews about being a ladies man).

It seems so silly now and a little sad. I think they worried it would break the romantic illusion for the audience, which I've never found to be the case for me personally.
