Passions Discussion Thread

At least I know I can look forward to one more good Jessica because Danica was dreadful. I always hated the character when I watched the show. I can't imagine how it got to that point. I also need to know why I LOVE Luis and SHeridan so much? They chemistry is off the charts, but originally I always disliked both characters. I only liked Sheridan when she became a bad girl. This early stuff is so good. I love the way they met and how she feeds his hatred for the Crane's, but he has good reason. She has no respect and hasn't taken responsibility for her actions with him. It's very cute. I can't wait to see this develop and for them to finally become a couple or friends or something.

Here's Jade on The Bay (would show you Passions clips but it might be sort of spoilish) in probably the best work she has done on the show: http://blip.tv/thebaytheseries/webisode-12-the-bay-chapter-3-part-4-4677903

Here's Danica's (defunct) websoap Coastal Dreams: http://www.nbc.com/coastal_dreams/

The laws of acting: Nearly destroy Maxie (GH) and destroy Jessica (Passions) and you get your own show. The Rules of Logic.

Ah sorry to post so much.

I just wanted to ask what did you all think of Simone's lesbian storyline?

Personally, I am on the fence about it. It would have been more of a logical move to make her bisexual (but this is JER were talking about, is there logic?) seeing as she was pining after Chad in the early episodes. I did like Cathy Doe's acting so it sort of saved it a bit for me.

Cathy Jeneen Doe was a nice variation of Lena's and Chrystee's Simone's. I didn't mind Simone as a lesbian, to be honest.

And early Sheridan and Luis are awesome. They just hated each other and I loved feisty Sheridan. I hated when she became this whiney victimized heroine and then she morphed into just bad (though I truly believe it was Beth taking over Sheridan's life). It really bothers me how Shuis didn't end up together, for whatever reason. They were just as much of a force as the Theresa/Ethan/Gwen saga was.

Luis with Fancy never made sense to me. I much preferred Fancy and Noah. Noah went downhill when paired with Paloma. Well, the second, bad acting version of Paloma. I always felt the character of Noah was wasted, much like Hank was.

I always felt like JER had more planned for Hank, but for whatever reason, kept him a boring good guy before just writing him off.

I didn't know how it would work watching Passions since NBC has always been the network I had the most difficulty with. Port Charles was the first soap I watched regularly and I still couldn't manage to keep watching that from the beginning. With Passions however, I'm hooked and can't get enough. It's a total success and I'm thankful that I decided to start collecting it.

Right now I'm in the middle of October of the first year and the stories are well formed and the cast is really strong. Unlike so many soaps, they mostly got it right in terms of characters that can carry the show for years and years. I like that they didn't cram everything into that first month and are now branching out and introducing story for characters like Eve, Julian, Simone and Ivy. Also things aren't going nearly as slow as I know they become. It's still slow, but it's very similar to the Bill Bell pacing I'm used to. The show is also VERY traditional soap which I wasn't expecting. By the time it was on DirecTV the show was truly a parody of a soap. I enjoyed it, but I do see that the family connections were missing.

I find it VERY interesting that Simone is the one who originally spots Chad, yet I know Whitney ends up with him. When I first started watching I recall Simone being the evil little sister who was jealous of Chad and Whitney, but now I see that was her man! LOL! The original Simone is truly fabulous. Kay too. Just a dynamic duo and it's so sad neither continued acting. Going back to Chad, I wonder why Eve immediately was so worried about him. Strange when you consider how many years it took for the story to be revealed.

Something hilarious, I had completely forgotten about Eve and Julian and they were one of my favorite couples. Ivy was having a party with the Russell's and the Bennett's and when Eve and Julian met they revealed that they had a secret past. I don't know how I completely blacked out on that lol.

I look forward to seeing what the first sweeps period brings! I have up to either June or July 2000 and I think I'm ready to get more episodes. It seems like I have so far to go.

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
