'Heroes' Wins Showdown With '24'

By James Hibberd

Fox's "24" faced off against NBC's "Heroes" for the first time Monday night in an action-drama matchup that left one show a clear victor.

"Heroes" returned from hiatus and bested the Fox drama by more than a full rating point, earning a 6.5 rating among adults 18 to 49, according to preliminary Nielsen Media Research data, compared with a 5.4 for "24." Compared to the same episode last year, "24" was down about 9 percent -- not surprising given the newfound competition from NBC's top-rated drama.

For NBC, the win also gave a slight uptick to "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" (3.2). Leading off the night at 8 p.m., "Deal or No Deal" (5.2) fared well also. All told, NBC won the night.

Fox was second, with "Prison Break" earning a 4.2, its highest rating all season.

Though CBS came in third, most of its comedy block and "CSI: Miami" (6.0) posted strong numbers. The comedy block was anchored by "Two and a Half Men" (4.9).

ABC was fourth with "Wife Swap" (3.5), "Supernanny" (3.6) and "What About Brian" (2.6).
