GL: the younger set

Is anyone still watching?

I've been going through some sort of yo-yo with this show opinion-wise. One day, I'll be really happy with it and another day, I'm ready to curse at the writing team.

The Jammy scenes Monday? Umm...HOT! I'm surprised at how much made it past through the censors.

I'm so incredibly frustrated with the character of Jonathan, though. I know some people like him with Lizzie but my God, it seems like doing so really emasculated the character. :( Since when did Jonathan become the type of guy to settle with someone he didn't love just because he had a baby with them???

I thought yesterday's ITL was really good. I thought it was a great idea to delve into the heads of all 3 characters in the Tammy/Jonathan/Lizzie story. I also thought it was neat how they carried the song they were playing in the opening scene to override the GL theme.

What yesterday's ITL did was remind me of what a great young cast GL has. It's unfortunate that the show's losing Stephanie Gatschet & Tom Pelphrey. SG, especially, has really been impressing me. Why didn't they write stuff like that for her earlier?? Her scenes yesterday reminded me of Dinah's first ITL. It was light and comedic. I also thought Tammy's reaction to Mel calling Beth a homewrecker was funny...the girl makes some of the best facial expressions. :lol:The parallel of the Mel/Rick/Beth and Lizzie/Jon/Tammy situations was a good one...and I liked even more how it was acknowledged a little later that the two aren't quite the same. That was also funny when she was counting Remy's abs and showed disgust at the thought of Lizzie using Santa to get to Jonathan.

As much as Lizzie grates on my nerves right now, I also loved her scenes yesterday ("I could be one of those celebrity moms!") And the way she tore up that note who she thought was from Tammy??? OMG...it was so over-the-top but funny as hell.

Whoever cast that baby to play Jon & Lizzie's kid did a great job. She looks a lot like TP and she's so freaking adorable! :D That was a really good scene where Jonathan was telling Sarah a story about himself and it later turned into a story about him and Tammy. It was so cute and I had to laugh at some of the extra comments he made ("People had a little fit about it because they were kind of cousins, but, yeah, we won't get into that. I know. It's icky.")

I can only imagine what the younger set is going to be like once SG & TP are gone. They'll still have MR but right now, John Driscoll & Michelle Ray Smith together wouldn't be enough to keep me interested in the 20-somethin scene. There's still Lawrence St. Victor (name?) who I think it pretty good..just not given much to work with, though, and Mandy Bruno..who is much better than I have given her credit for...but they all seem to be on their own separate bubble.

Back to Monday...I loved the scenes with Frank & Rick! :D Those two are hilarious together.

God, they are really wasting Gina Tognoni on a boring story. It's gotten to the point where I could care less about Dinah. Whoever thought that whole reality TV story would be an intriguing one is on some major crack. Let's move on now.

Everytime Michael Dempsey is on screen, I can't get over how hot he is. (I wish there was a *sigh* smiley) Give the guy a frontburner story! I can't say that enough!

I like the addition of Sheila & Cal! They seem like really fun and colourful characters. I'm glad Billy blew Reva off when she was 20-questioning about Sheila. Billy really might be in trouble but it's also about time he not follow Reva's every command from now on. I was getting sick of Billy the lapdog.

Is it CONFIRMED that Tom Pelphrey and Stephanie Gatschet are indeed leaving GL? I thought it was just all rumor.

It was confirmed months ago that they are leaving

SJ, I am still watching and loving it. It is one of the shows that I have to watch everyday. The only story I find boring is Dinah's story.

I just don't post much in the Daily Threads anymore because of things that happened in another one (not this show but another). I just tend to keep most of my opinions about the daily episodes to myself at SON these days. LOL

But I still love my GL and can't wait for it to air each day.

I'm still watching, but I'm over a week behind. I hate the way characters get screwed over when people leave the show. I know it's inevitable, but it still annoys me. I really hate Jammy right now, although I like TP and SG. Tammy just isn't making sense to me and hasn't for weeks. She gave Jon up and then gets mad when Lizzie tries to make the marriage real? Wouldn't it be a good thing if Lizzie could get her husband to love her? Otherwise what was the point of Tammy giving Jon up? It really annoyed me when she said Jon and "that baby" can do better than Lizzie. Jon maybe, but keep your mitts off Lizzie's baby and make up your mind about what you want!

It's a sad day when GUsh is the best thing on this show for me. They normally bore me to tears, but their ITL was very sweet. I actually shed a few tears at one point (hormones maybe  )

Ava and Coop, I just can't care. They need to bring Shane or Marah back. I miss Quint. He should have been around during all Lizzie's drama. Otherwise the 20 something's aren't going to be about much when Jammy leave.

Yeah, and I'm still in denial. :(

Aww, Steve...post more! I love reading your thoughts about the show and about soaps in general. The reason i haven't started threads for GL earlier in the week is a) I've been swamped with school (I just recently finished my last exam) B) I've been swamped with work and c) I just don't care to talk to only myself.

Julia, I'm the opposite. I love Jammy, love Tammy, hate Lizzie, and most of all, hate Jonathan. Confused yet? I think Tammy just realized that Jon & Lizzie staying married might not be the best thing for everyone (although the extremity of Tammy's selflessness has been weak writing, IMO, and an easy tool to help drag this horrid story along for months). After all, since when did people have to be married to be good parents? How Jonathan managed to become suckered into that logic is beyond me. As for Tammy being paranoid about Lizzie using her baby, well, it's about damn time Tammy stop treating Lizzie like a saint..Lizzie might love her baby but she certainly didn't have a problem about getting married to her supposed best friend's boyfriend. Also, hasn't Lizzie said over and over again how it'd be good for Sarah if her parents loved each other? Sound like Lizzie is using her to me. Another thing that Lizzie forgets is that the whole marriage thing was supposed to be temporary and she knew from the start that it would never be a real marriage. Somehow, Jonathan came to promise that he'd always be there for Lizzie & the baby but he never promised Lizzie that he'd eventually come around and fall in love with her or have sex with her.

I'm just glad that Tammy is finally growing a backbone and has finally stopped caring so much about what Lizzie wants and needs ahead of her own.

Meanwhile, Jonathan just confuses the heck out of me. I think they have come really close to assassinating his character a few times over the past month (re: his emasculation and Stepford Husband transformation). This week alone has given me some whiplash. I knew he felt guilty about sleeping with Tammy and equated being with her to being a bad dad but on Tuesday's show, I just didn't see it. He was making all these inappropriate sexual innuendos to Lizzie RIGHT AFTER he just slept with Tammy. I didn't know what to make of it. Was it Jon being Jon or was it him being a jackass leading two chicks on? Meanwhile, Tammy has been feeling like crap and understandably worrying about being "the other woman". I've said this elsewhere but it seems like Tammy's self-esteem has taken a nose-dive (that is, until I saw Wed. show) and that's one thing that really grates me about Jonathan. He always gets a free pass. I don't get why Jonathan doesn't just be a man and tell Lizzie that their marriage won't work or at least let her know up front that he doesn't want to sleep with her instead of constantly giving her more reason to think that he eventually will.

So given all those reasons, I haven't a clue as to why I still love Jammy. I'm either a closet misogynist or all logic just goes out the window when it comes to those two. But I think it's clear when those two are in a room together, there's so much love there that any stupid obstacle that gets thrown in there, any bit of character butchering or horrid writing won't get in the way...and I definitely attribute that to the acting.

That's why I'm glad they did the ITL episode. Like I said, I knew why Jonathan felt guilty but I didn't see it but yesterday, I finally did. We also finally got into Tammy's head and see what makes her tick. While she's been heavily featured in this story, she's more than often helped move the story along rather than be a central character who thinks and feels in a complex way. We also finally saw that while Lizzie has been accepted with open arms by Jonathan's family and is so sickeningly smug herself, she does have fears which almost make me feel sorry for her.

I think my issue here is that Jon did decided to stay with Lizzie long term AFTER Tammy let him go for good. Tammy is the one who said Jammy wouldn't work anymore. So then Jon decided to stay in the marriage and make it work and Tammy decides she wants him again. Tammy is so selfish. She never decides what she wants and sticks to it. Plus Jon did tell Reva he wanted it to be a real marriage, so that implies sex to me. And sure, people don't have to be married to be good parents, but it sure doesn't hurt. Jammy has been completely unstable long before Lizzie and Sarah came into it. I really don't see anything wrong with Lizzie saying it's best for Sarah if her parents love each other. That's probably true, but that doesn't mean Lizzie can force Jon to love her. He either would love her over time or he wouldn't. I'm not sure why that matters to Tammy, since she was the one to walk away, AGAIN. Basically, I see it as her changing her mind again when she was afraid Jon really would move on.

I've pretty much given up on trying to make any sense of this storyline or expect any kind of character integrity. It's like when VM left GH last time and Jax left Brenda at the alter. It made no sense at all, but you just have to swallow it when people are leaving the show.

I'm still watching when I get the chance (being outside the US I have to use...alternative measures to catch the show if I want to see it) but I'm still enjoying it. I get why there's so much dissatisfaction for long time viewers but for newbies such as myself, it is a very accessible show. It is also the warmest and most down-to-earth of all the soaps on air IMO.

The only letdown for me at the moment is the Dinah/Mallett crap -- and that's what it is. I used to enjoy their sparring and chemistry but this story is nauseating and its made me realise that I don't actually like Mallett so if he were to say, get shot in the line of duty I wouldn't be disappointed. I also don't know how the show will survive without Jonathan and Tammy if they insist on keeping an emphasis on the younger set. I'm no expert on the show's history but there must be some teenagers out there that could be brought back to bridge the gap. Preferably played by actors with a little charisma as opposed to Ava certain others.

One question, I dropped out for a few weeks but has the show explained what happened to Blake? Last time I saw her, she was still in the hospital after the poisoning and Dinah was going to run off with Clarissa.

Julia, one thing that has changed since Tammy changed her mind is that she no longer thinks Lizzie is deserving of the family she has now. For the longest time, she felt sorry for her but not anymore. While Tammy's semi-delusions that Lizzie is purely using Sarah to get Jonathan is part of Tammy's change of view, I think we could also attribute it to the fact that she's naturally become more envious. Tammy, for the most part, has been the good girl while Lizzie...not so much. It's natural that Tammy would eventually become angry and frustrated with the fact that she has been "put off to the side" (as she so perfectly stated in this week's ITL) while Lizzie, despite all the crap she's pulled, has managed to get all the things Tammy wanted. Yeah, Tammy did agree to the marriage but she's missing out on being the other parent helping to raise the love of her life's first child. She never forced Lizzie & Jonathan to have sex. Is her mindset selfish? Heck, yeah...but like I said, I think it's waay past time for Tammy to stop putting everyone else's needs ahead of herself. IMO, Tammy & Jonathan's characters have been sacrificed since this awful baby story began. Tammy has been painted as a one-note self-sacrificing martyr while Jonathan has been turned into this squeaky clean hero who obeys his mom (God, I could just smack Reva for constantly using Jonathan to make up for the mistakes she made with her other kids) and everyone else even though what they're telling him to do isn't what he wants to do.

I used to love Dinah & Mallet up until Mallet slept with Harley and acted like Dinah and Gus should just get over it. Since those two have gotten back together (after numerous on-and-off's), I feel like they act like 12-year-olds half the time. It's just not entertaining. I don't think it'd be much of a loss if they killed Mallet off, either...although I think he's more tolerable when he's away from Dinah.

As for the future of the younger set, they still have Marcy Rylan. I have no idea what they'll do with Lizzie, though. Put her back with Coop, maybe? After all, it seems like they're headed for an Ava/A-M hookup.

Speaking of Ava, I actually enjoyed Michelle Ray Smith's scenes yesterday. I thought the Ava & Jeffrey scenes were really good. When Jeffrey tore up that card or whatever it was that Ava gave him, I couldn't help but think what a jackass he was being. I actually feel horrible for Ava...although I don't know why she would even wanna associate with her rapist father.

I have no idea what's up with Blake. Last I saw her, she was explaining to Harley why she did the whole Springfield Burns thing.
