ALL: Producers/writers favorite performers.
And Doug Marland specifically created Carrie for Jane Eliot on Guiding Light after writing for her as Tracy on GH. But he never used her on ATWT in the 7 years he was there. Henry Slesar created a role for Lois Kibbee(Emily) on Somerset after he wrote her off EON and then brought Geraldine back to Edge. She the wrote EON under his leadership. Was he writing OLTL when she was cast as Elizabeth?

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Silverman's 3 year tenure produced only 3 'hits' Diff'rent Strokes/Facts of Life, Real People and Hill St Blues, none of which were consistent Top 10 or Top 20 shows. The first schedule Grant Tinker oversaw produced Family Ties, Remington Steele, Knight Rider, St Elsewhere and Cheers. None of them were initially successful but there was definite upturn in quality and potential. Mid season came the A Team, the first genuine hit for NBC in years. And then Cosby and Golden Girls..

ALL: Producers/writers favorite performers.
Who are some of the actors that particular writers and performers seemed to like,?-based on them appearing on different soaps that those writers or producers were involved with. Jill Farren Phelps favorites are often mentioned . Some others Bill Bell - Robert Clary appeared in 3 Bell soaps Bell was writing-DOOL, Y&R and B&B each time playing pretty much the same character. Wes Kenney- When he came to Y&R, Patty Weaver, Suzanne Zenor, Mark Tapscott joined the cast, all who had been on Days during his tenure. Doug Marland - Wrote Lisa Brown into ATWT when he joined, after writing for her as Nola on GL. Other examples?

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
@kalbir Thanks, corrected. NBC were really lagging this season and didn't have any big movies ,mini series or specials to boost those poor numbers. I think as a result of Fred Silverman's tenure, profits were way down and there was a freeze on spending for programming.

The soap opera writers' discussion
The Boston Globe June 11 2007 Jeanne Davis Glynn, 75, Emmy-nominated writer ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Jeanne Davis Glynn, an actress who received several Emmy nominations as a writer for daytime soap operas, died Friday at a local healthcare center, according to family members. She was 75. Ms. Glynn had been in treatment for cancer since 1999 and her health had started to fail earlier this year, said her former husband, Malachy Glynn. Ms. Glynn received five Emmy Award nominations as a script writer in the 1980s and 1990s on the shows "General Hospital," "Guiding Light," "As the World Turns," "One Life to Live" and "Port Charles." She won a Writers Guild of America Award in 1984 for her work on "Search for Tomorrow," and received a Soap Opera Digest Award six years later for "General Hospital" scripts. "It was an actor in New York City who first challenged me to write soap operas," Ms. Glynn said in an interview last year with the News-Times newspaper of Danbury. "He said it was a good way of reaching young people and I already knew, of course, that TV was the greatest commercial tool in the world for telling stories about the human condition," she said. Ms. Glynn was born in Chicago, and she grew up near Buffalo. She graduated from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and later toured Europe and the United States as an actor, producer, and director, family members said. In New York, she appeared in Christopher Plummer's television production of "Oedipus Rex" and acted, directed, and stage managed productions at Circle in the Square. Ms. Glynn was a longtime resident of New Fairfield and had two sons: Danbury attorney Liam Glynn and John Glynn, an advertising executive in New York City. "She beat the odds both in her life and her illness," said her son John. "She was a role model both for her family and for many other people.".

Flamingo Road
Taking a deeper dive into Flamingo Roads ratings in it's second season , it actually did better numbers when it moved up to 9pm Tuesday. That move was sort of forced upon NBC because of a lack of fresh programming. Father Murphy @ 8 was moved to Sun so Bret Maverick and Flamingo moved forward an hour, Barbara Mandrell reruns took over at 10. The highest weekly ranking Flamingo got at 10 was 44th. Once the show was moved to 9 it began ranking in the mid 30's and the finale was #27. Its highest 10pm was 16.6/26 and highest 9pm rating was 16.7/26. So maybe a 3rd season might have done better in the right timeslot?

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
Wisconsin Fond du Lac The Reporter Aug 8 199 Actress Brittany Wells (Barbara Witz) is a former roommate of Crystal Chappell, who plays Dr. Carly Manning on "Days of Our Lives." "She was one of my best friends," says Witz, emphasizing the past tense. Although the two parted ways, Witz has fond memories of Chappell, the days before Carly became a star on "Days." She describes Chappell as "very engaging, compassionate. She liked an ugly dog." The roommates landed parts on "Days" about the same time, but Chappell's was destined to become a major role. Witz thinks success spoiled Chappell. Or gave her an "attitude." "She's very beautiful but "people hated her maybe they were jealous of her." Because they didn't like her haughty attitude, cast and crew members took to playing pranks on Chappell, who sometimes found her costumes split, sleeves glued together or got the wrong script. Ironically, Chappell didn't get along well with the actor w ho originally played Bo Brady, her on-screen love interest. She hit it off however, with Michael Sabatino, the character Lawrence Alamain whom Carly loathed. Chappell now has a serious off-screen relationship with Sabatino. Witz said he's "a real sweetheart"

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
It might have been better had Carol and a reformed Jay left Oakdale in 1980 for 'a whole new life', rather than making her a widow and marrying another unsuitable mate. Some sources have Carol marrying again to her real life husband Norman Walter, a minister. Did that happen or was it mentioned by her on one of her visits. She's listed as recurring for a time but how often was Carol seen? Carol meeting and marrying a minister onscreen would have been a nice ending for the character but by that stage it wouldn't have interested TPTB.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Most of these historical inaccuracies come about because TPTB are not really interested in the history or maintaining continuity. That really took hold in the 80's when pretty much anything pre that time was seen as irrelevant. Of course it's impossible to reference every story/character from the past but more care should have been taken eg Were Meta and Trudy mentioned when Bill reappeared in 77? Was there thought to bringing Ellen Demming back for a few appearances-she only left a few years before. Mike and Leslie should have been given a child-a boy to carry on the Bauer name. And have Meta return after Bert's death to be the new Guiding Light for family and friends. But they thought the adventures of Roxie Shayne were more worthy.

Another World Discussion Thread
Don't know about Lemay but that single sentence type dialogue seemed to be a soap staple at one time -at least in ascene setup. eg - Tom, I need to talk to you about something that has been on my mind. -Ok Sally, feel free -I'm not sure you'll want to discuss it once you hear what I have to say. - Well go ahead and say it and we'll see. - it concerns Mary . - Mary? - I know you saw her last night and I wonder if that was a wise thing to do? - Why not? Mary is a dear friend. - Just a friend Tom? and so on...

CBS soaps - a day back in 1965
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Nice to know you had a great relationship with your uncle. Just thinking that CBS address list might give us some info on other actors appearing at that time. As you see we only recently discovered your uncle's appearance on the show.

Thanks for the correction. In the case of Barry it was merely a typo. My info had Noelle Beck back for a few appearances in 94.

I wonder how that came about? They must have sensed they had the upper hand and went for it. I'm surprised that sort of move was legal. Sounds like something Warner Bros would pull back in the 30's and 40's. Don't think it would be allowed now.

Santa Barbara Discussion Thread
Yes,it's funny that sometimes when a performer leaves fans are totally behind it even though it might upset story plans for the show. But when someone is dismissed fans are up in arms about how it will ruin the show. Robin had a contract that she wanted to break with no consequence. The PTB are always blamed in these cases.

ALL: Errors, Myths, Omissions & Firsts that weren't
A few things I have read repeatedly re Irna and ATWT That she wanted Liz Stewart to burn to death on her honeymoon. Does anyone have written confirmation of this? That she fired Jane House because she was appearing nude in Lenny on Broadway. Jane was fired in June 71.Irna returned to ATWT in Jan 72 That when she returned she quickly killed Liz and Paul and wrote off Dan. As stated Irna returned Jan 72. Paul was killed of in Nov 72 and Liz and Dan written out in 73. So hardly a quick decision.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: July 2024 Episode Count
Why does Sonny have to lead the rankings month after month? That's no way to treat the character or the show. The mandate is obviously that he has to be at least Top 3 every month. Very restrictive for the writers and damaging for the character. Even Y&R doesn't insist on the same for Victor.
