I happened to grow up a few miles from her family home. I never met her or her family, but the family business was well-known in the region. Her father and brother ran "Buzzi Memorials" - they carved gravestones and other memorials out of granite. They sometimes carved historical monuments for cities. The business was sold in 2016 to another granite-carver but still has the same name. In the summer when driving to the beach, we would drive past the big "Buzzi Memorials" sign on the side of the road; and back in the 1960s, we heard ads for the business on the local radio station. Arleen's Calliope was larger than life. For an awkward teen navigating all the crap we go through, seeing a character living an eccentric life right along with all the "normal" characters was great. From her hijinks with Eugene, capers with Anna (she and Leann Hunley gave such great "bestie" energy), to the Beat Bar with "Norm De Plume" A. K. A. Dr. Tom Horton, she fit in with anyone. That's what I did when I found my friend/family that I'm still hanging with 30 years later. Calliope was just a small piece of inspiration I've gleaned over the years, and I will always love Sorkin for the gift her portrayal gave to me.
