For this reason, I roll my eyes whenever some people talk about 'liberal Hollywood'. Many (certainly not all) actors tend to be liberal, quite a lot of writers are liberal but the majority of studio executives and bosses are NOT liberal. Many studio bosses/executives are as right-leaning as one can get, short of being right-wing. This is a history that goes all the way back to the early days of the old Hollywood studio system and Louis B. Mayer, who was a staunch conservative and at one time, a chairman of the California wing of the Republican party. Anyone who believes that Hollywood is some bastion of liberalism obviously knows absolutely nothing about how the entertainment industry really works. The dudes (and they are almost all white men) in charge are far from liberal.

It's going to get worse. When those iPhone components start absorbing the sticker shock, the portion of the consumer market that had been spared up until now, will begin to really feel a sharp pinch. Previously, the suffering had been limited to certain groups (anyone in the market for a product made with steel, e.g. washer/dryer or refrigerator) cellphones and their accessories were exempt before.

^^I saw that CNN video on social media and something told me not to post it here. It was just an instinct that I got and I searched the subtweets and saw that someone claimed to know a few of the women in the gathering and identified them as GOP operatives (they may have used another word instead of operatives, though). I got a bad vibe after watching that video and ultimately decided not to post it here even before I had read about who some of who these women might be. What terrible people these folks are! Also, I'm glad I no longer subscribe to cable and that CNN gets none of my money and very little of my time.- The Politics Thread
This should be disturbing to folks: Starting last year, the Afghan and U.S. governments started keeping the death tolls in Afghanistan a secret. This NYT article posits that the death toll has only gone up since 2016. The Death Toll for Afghan Forces Is Secret. Here’s Why. "Seventeen years after the United States went to war in Afghanistan, the Taliban is gaining momentum, seizing territory, and killing Afghan security forces in record numbers." "Last week was especially bad, with more than 400 killed, according to an account by diplomats. But even the average numbers in recent months — from 30 to 40 a day, according to senior Afghan officials — represent a substantial upswing from two years ago and appear unsustainable in a country that has been shattered by decades of war." About 400 Afghan police and soldiers were killed last week, according to details leaked from a meeting between American diplomats. 400??!!! When questioned, apparently the diplomats said that they weren't talking literally but in terms of sacrifice.- The Politics Thread

L'Affaire de Ed Whelan is truly revealing the GOP to be comprised mostly of a band of nutjobs. There is just no other way to describe it. They really are panicking and it's not pretty.- Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread
I almost posted about the Jian Ghomeshi (whose case I've been reading about for about two years) in the Off-Topic Thread since I don't consider it to be Hollywood related. Back on topic though, This article discusses the possibility that Moonves may end up collecting that $120 million after all, despite several CBS directors refusal. Why Les Moonves Might Still Get $120 Million From CBS So Moonves is claiming that his encounters were consensual (a la Weinstein) but any "inappropriate" behavior was before he arrived at CBS. Trigger warning, everybody because this is pretty awful.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
@Brolden Glad you enjoyed that. I'd love to ask someone who made the creative decisions on how scenes were shot. Was it decided during meetings or was it left up to the director and/or camera operators? It seems that those people had to be skilled to shoot these almost entirely continuous sequences because they had to shoot so much script material in a relatively brief amount of time so they had to be efficient. It is unlikely that they had a lot of time to do re-takes. Today's shows do a couple of scenes with from a funky angle and they make a big show of what they've done but ATWT was so fluid and seamless, that they it had an understated quality about it. This is might be why the show may not have gotten much credit for a lot of the technical feats that they accomplished. They made it look so easy! I'd love to do other clips highlighting other aspects that ATWT accomplished technically but the editing of clips was kind of a chore because the software was so clunky. Maybe down the road, I'll do some having to do with my favorite musical cues in scenes-- there were some memorable ones.- The Politics Thread
Charles Blow speaks eloquently of why someone wouldn't have come forward and also why the FBI is much better equipped at doing an investigation. This is definitely worth your time to watch. Anita Hill expresses the hope that the Senate gets things right this time by conducting a more thoughtful hearing and a thorough investigation before testimony is given. Anita Hill: How to Get the Kavanaugh Hearings Right- The Politics Thread
The same party who delayed Merrick Garland's hearing as long as humanly possible (over 400 days) are now chiding Democrats for agreeing that the FBI should investigate before Prof. Blasey Ford testifies because it would delay the vote. How richly hypocritical of the GOP but none of us are surprised, right?- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
You're welcome @~bl~ @DRW50. I wish that the second video was a bit clearer, sharper but since PGP/P&G won't upload episodes on a streaming platform anywhere, beggars can't be choosers, I guess. I've been wanting to post clips for sometime but had to get myself in the mood to do it. There are other editing software that are much better but they have to be installed and until I can get myself a new hard- drive (either portable or internal), I don't want to install any more software on my computer. Soaps back then were likely always multi-camera but the seamless movement of these tracking shots are just beautiful. Another reason why this is probably not done on today's soaps is because, clearly the director had to do blocking with the actors, so they know when to move out of frame and when and where to enter. Today's soaps don't seem as if they even use a director. I can't really recall when ATWT ceased doing these types of tracking shots but I'd guess somewhere around the mid 90s when the 'old guard' started to depart and the accountants really started to have a bigger say, which was a shame because ATWT really began to lose its visual beauty, frame by frame and the show began to take on a more generic look.- Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread
