I agree. In both cases, you have a show that's been at the top for so long that it has atrophied. CBS and Sony were only too eager to get rid of the "Bell house style" of storytelling, but not much else; and it's been that unwillingness to evolve that has been Y&R's undoing, even if the ratings continue to say otherwise.

I'm with those two chuckleheads on "The Chat": this needs to be the last we ever see of Patty Williams. I don't even care anymore that they've never given us a real explanation for why she came back in '09 crazier than she had been in '84. I just want her gone. Permanently.

I think most actors today understand that the days of lavish budgets are long gone. But what I think Y&R's cast misses more than the money is the sense of professionalism. Even if your budget is crap, you still should be able to know how to get the most out of every cent without sacrificing good writing. Something that I don't think Y&R has known for a very long time.

That's the thing: as off-the-rails as she's been since someone remembered she existed once upon a time, not once has she been a terror who has had me shaking in my boots or sitting on the edge of my seat. She's done I-don't-know-how much damage to Jack and the rest of the Abbott family; yet, she still comes across as a pathetic, cat-loving clown.

Uh, on that note, Y&R's official instagram posted a video of the Patty/Jack rape scene with a laugh track, captioned "Now this is a sitcom we're SAT for." Utter cringe.

Is there any way to retcon that and reveal that Patty didn't actually rape Jack? Like, she only made him believe they had had sex in order to destroy his and Diane's marriage?

Y&R needs a creative shot in the arm to shake things up. TPTB should think outside the box and hire someone new, not a recycled writer who has already been on several soaps. The Netflix series On My Block was co-created and primarily written by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft. They were adept at writing both comedy and drama. And they always wrote good season ending cliffhangers.

Half the cast looks checked out. You got to wonder who is riding out their contract just to collect a paycheck.

Any new writer unfamiliar with soaps would probably want to dump half the cast based on their story history.

It needs to be someone, if not familiar with the show, at least with an understanding of the genre and the limitations in place and some experience in a writing capacity.

Or a new voice co writing with someone with experience.

I somehow don’t feel they’ll put any real effort in trying to find an “outside” voice - at the end of the day, all Sony and CBS cares about is the show coming in under budget and producing episodes as cheaply and quickly as possible. We’re just looking at the very limited cesspool of recycled “talent” unfortunately, but I would love to be proven wrong.

It would be great though if they found another Harding Lemay type though - someone whose background is not in soaps and possibly doesn’t have any real affinity for the genre, but was trained and coached on how to write for it and found ways for it to gel with their creative mindset. Then again, this could go in the Hogan Sheffer direction, which is the last thing this show needs…

Same. I don't want Patty destroyed like that. Issues aside, I like Stacey Haiduk. And I at least like the intrigue of Mary Jane...until she became a cartoon.
