Side note: if our dreams came true and they uploaded the entire 57 year catalog of the series to stream, I wonder which eras/decades would have the most hits. I know I wouldn’t be interested in anything past 2002 aside from some hate-watching of the serial killer story of ‘03/04. I’d be all about the 80’s and 90’s.

I know he has had to justify the musical guests during almost every season budget renewal, and also he has protected the show airing the way it does- live, with the cold open, weekend update as a centerpiece, musical guests, etc.  Also the way the show is run- from the writer’s night to final show, three weeks and a break.  So while I think the show would continue without him, minus the budgets and more network interference, I just don’t think we get a better show out of the tinkering.

My apologies for hijacking this thread with SNL talk- I’m as obsessed with the bts of SNL as I am with with soaps.

I’m the one who originally brought it up. My last comment on it - in this day and age of YouTube and viral clips, I absolutely think SNL could and should continue, with the right person(s) at the helm.

I would miss the 90 minute format, but many other changes (like not needing Update every week or just having one musical performance a week, or even changing up the  writing schedule) I  really wouldn't be as sorry to see, to be honest...although whether we'd get another show, who knows.

As you said, this is better suited for the SNL thread.

Passions move to streaming years ago and began with 3 eppies/week, then 2.  Eventually, eppies just didn't air consistently until we were told it was canceled.  Direct TV gained many new accounts but the show didn't last very long after the move.

Considering how bad Days has been I watch it on DVR that way I can fast forward what characters/stories I don't like and I can fast forward the commercials. Seeing Days live would be a big chore in its current state.

One assumes they'll post early every morning like Beyond Salem, although the UK soaps recently experimented with posting the whole week of episodes every Monday

Call me when that guy gets either a digital marketing degree or spell-check.

These are the same types of doomsday predictions that people said when VCRs came to market.

The truth is that we don't know how people will consume serialized drama as more people cut the cord. Passions and AMC/OLTL were a lifetime ago in the age of streaming and smart tv technology.   And, optimistically, given that streaming sponsorship relies on micro data of the audience, writers and creatives won't be beholden to keep trying to entice 18-35 year old viewers, if an older more dedicated audience continues to watch the show.

    • I really have no problem with Kai as a character or with the actor. The problem is putting together two very nice people -- Kai and Trina. Neither of them has a bad side, neither of them has a devil on the shoulder, neither of them is impulsive. I think that's a problem in a soap relationship. Yeah, I agree. All this freaking out might make sense if Lulu wanted to do a tabloid expose on BLQ's LOVE CHILD. We have no indication that's the case.
    • So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.
    • The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.
    • I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
