Most Unnecessary Miscarriages

So many times miscarriage stories are a simple plot device for sheer shock value but are often detrimental to show. Of course a lot of miscarriages are the end result of a scandalous affair that shouldn’t have happened but sometimes get thrown in for no real reason. Here’s a few miscarriages I felt were completely unnecessary/overkill:

AW: Josie’s 1997 one

ATWT: Anytime Allison got pregnant

GL: Ed & Maureen

Y&R: Ryan & Nina, Paul & Christine

I’m quite sure I can think of some more, any others?

Nicole was my first thought too.  I think GH's Carly has had a few unnecessary miscarriages.  Every pregnancy she had was high risk, but she has a bunch of kids lol.

Shout out to Marlena's geriatric pregnancy on days.  I get that it got that Alex story rolling, but DH was like 60 lol.  I highly doubt she could get preggers after a one night stand with another senior citizen named Roman.

Oh gosh I forgot about Nicole and her umpteenth miscarriages, I think she rivals Amber on B&B in that department! I mean how many has she lost, two with EJ, one with Rafe, and wasn’t their one with Daniel as well? Yikes! Not to mention Holly was also presumed dead briefly as well.

That Marlena pregnancy was hilariously bad as was her stumble down the penthouse stairs all to lead to hysterical amnesia? Definitely the nadir of JER 2.0 no doubt

Yeah poor Nicole.  I don't think Rafe was ever the father of her baby.  It was Ej, Ej, then Daniel.

Marlena's slow motion tumble down the penthouse stairs is epic.  As is John, Kate, Roman just standing there while she tumbles.  What a stupid story.  That whole thing was awful, but I can't forgive wasting Wayne Northrup in the most thankless role ever.

BB 1998 Brooke (though it was never revealed if the pregnancy was real or if she faked it in order to stay married to Ridge when Taylor gave birth to Thomas)

YR 2008 Lily (she miscarried Cane's child)

What about Sam on GH?  It wasn't a miscarriage exactly, but we had to hear about her broken uterus for approximately 7 years after that.   I still don't know how Sam had two kids without a uterus to this day.

And I will never not be grossed out by Maxie miscarrying Lulu and Dante's kid and immediately having sex with Spinelli and getting pregnant with Georgie.  EWWWWW..

Ashley & Victor

I found the whole gaslighting plot totally skeevy & difficult to watch. They were so happy and Ashley was actually nice to Adam. Only for him to exploit their relationship which inevitably lead to her tumble.

The baby switch was the cherry on top of this mean spirited sundae. This was the point where Adam's character went way off the rails. It boggles my mind that Jack remained friends with him after this. Heck this story should've been the death of Shadam.

It was even more heart breaking because Victor had just lost Sabrina and their daughter not even a yr earlier.

I actually liked this era of Y&R but avoid it on rewatches because it's just too sad.

Christine a few years back on Y&R! I know it got Lauralee Bell an Emmy nomination, but after all that character has gone through and she has no legacy. It's crazy that Lauralee is a Bell and her character is so disrespected after being frontburner for so many years.

Paul and Emily on ATWT had a stillborn. Completely unnecessary. A bit baffling considering both were long time characters and would continue to stay on and even ended up together when the show wrapped up.

I also wish Julia didn't miscarry Jack's baby but I guess they knew Annie Parisse was leaving by that time.

My mind immediately went to Tad and Dixie. I was pretty young and in school but I vaguely recall someone pointing out that blood was dripping down Dixie's leg. They might have even shown it. The fact that we never got to see them experience a pregnancy and birth as a couple after all they went through is pretty sad.

On The Doctors, didn't Maggie have a pregnancy storyline that resulted in miscarriage? I'm sure it was in the early 80s when the show had a revolving door of writers, I remember reading some summaries around the Maggie being pregnant and it creating a rift between her and Matt. Even though it was a late in life pregnancy, I wouldn't have minded the pair having a child of their own.

Ed and Maureen also would've been nice to see share a kid.

Pam's second miscarriage on Dallas. She had already had the first one when she fell from the hayloft. Then a year later she was pregnant again and was thrown from a horse. Why ??? They did that neuro fiber whatcha-ma-call-it story that amounted to nothing since she was not Digger's daughter. They then spend 9 years with Pam wanting a child, then not wanting a child, then wanting a child and going crazy trying to kill herself by not having a child. Then when she get's fried in the car accident, she was on her way to tell Bobby she could....guess what ? Have a child.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
