Racism and racial representation on soaps

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YR kept Staff after she assaulted VR
  • YR tried to keep MM after he assaulted HK
  • But it's too late for VR/Dru?  Yeah ok.

Loren Lott was basically told they are writing for the characters who matter, which is why she had to go.

At the height of Dru's popularity, VR brought an energy YR had never seen.  Many of the white leads and TIIC had a problem with that.  When you think of YR, a black face should not be the first thing to come to mind.

Yet for me she has always been the face that comes to mind.

I mean, look at Amanda Sinclair. How boring can you get? Don't tell me that isn't being done on purpose because it is. You could literally remove her next week and fan outcry would not be nearly as bad (well it would for different reasons now, but you know what I'm trying to say)

I was also trying to think of frontburner Black villains on soaps who lasted more than a few months and didn’t merely exist just to make a white/Latino character look good before being disposed of (à la Taylor on AMC or Keri on OLTL). Would Liz on Passions and Virginia on SuBe count? (Edit: forgot Lexie’s turn to the dark side on DAYS.) It’s crazy that, in all their years on the show, neither Dru nor Olivia on Y&R ever really had a Sheila/Phyllis/Isabella-type character to go up against. (I know Dru tangled with Phyllis but that was long after Ms. Summers had become a heroine.) Carmen was the closest Dru ever had, and that character was not particularly well-crafted, to say the least.

If we can't have #JusticeforJasonBrooks  (ya know, if he's, like, not interested in returning), how about a GL supercouple to DAYS with Chamberlin as Jennifer and Grant Aleksander as a Peter Blake recast?  They could FINALLY utilize this character again!

This is exactly the sense that I got about that matter. Talking about cutting off your nose to spite your face!

Honestly Y&R has some some beautiful Black women characters, going back to the 1980s and has, for the most part, wasted every single one. VR/Dru is the one character who actually got some story written for her, with TLW/Olivia a distant second. I guess, Y&R really feared that these ladies would dim a White character's "spotlight".

I'm still livid about what ATWT did to LR/Marshall Travers.  As many times as they brought back James Stenbeck or 'reformed' John Dixon (I'd mention Craig Montgomery too but they ultimately ruined him in the show's last decade), they didn't have to go full rapist with Marshall. Such a gorgeous man LR is, and such a sexy pairing he had with TT before it all went downhill into the abyss.

I really need a skilled podcast host who will keep it 100% to do a Zoom or Google Chat with Tamara and Laman to ask them about their true feelings on that whole storyline.  I suspect they'd have much to say.  If I had the proper equipment, I'd contact them myself!

After the GL reunion, I would happily add to the voices of Beth as a recast Jennifer. Or Kimberly Simms.  Both still look great, although Beth at least has an understanding of working under the current production process.  Even DAYS today would probably be better than the last year of GL.

I know Sony and Y&R will not rehire Victoria Rowell, at least not until some execs are gone.  Which is awful for her

and for the viewers.  Latham may not have written good material for her, but she certainly knew the value of keeping Dru front and center.

And much like Ellen Holly- she deserves every opportunity to speak about how important those stories were for the show and the audience and the performers.  If that means fans and TPTB have to confront their racism by not believing, ignoring, or wishing it away so be it.

Lisa Rinna sells her clothing. I'd love to see Terri Conn with her on air selling her stuff and her idiot husband, Austin Peck, wondering who Lisa Rinna is.

At least Rinna can go back to Days. I can't say that about awful Conn.

@titan1978 Kim would make a great Jennifer recast. At least she wouldn't look like Irene Ryan.

    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.
    • You've been seeing him all along. You just didn't know it was him, I guess.

    • Where to for Dana? She's pissed off the Duprees (most of the cast), alienated her daughter and will she be welcomed by the Have Nots at the diner? Maybe she can befriend Ashley and Derek and liven up their story.
    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
