Y&R to air classic episodes

The early years were known and applauded for their lush, rich production values (sets, music, lighting, etc.), and while some of the cast was "green" at the beginning, most of them had remarkable on-screen charisma and were quite talented (Janice Lynde, Trish Stewart, Julianna McCarthey among others). I'd say that it was only in the late 1970s that the show started to flounder somewhat.

Where any sort of art is concerned, it's not possible to please and appeal to every viewer. What bores one person mesmerizes another.

When Charita Bauer was playing out Bert's amputation story on The Guiding Light, someone said to me that it was a mistake to giver her a major story because, "Nobody in the audience wants to see that! We want to watch young, sexy people having romances and adventure!" Bert's story was the last plot I enjoyed on that show for YEARS. To each his own.

They could so easily air some of the 70's episodes in full, which is roughly 22min and use the remaining air time to interview some of the people from that time period, and actually celebrate Y&R's early years. Which also helps younger viewers understand what was going on and who the characters are

I think that’s the key part of the classic episodes that is missing: context. The intros don’t really provide enough of it. I’d hate to see these beautiful episodes marred by the VH1 Pop-Up Video treatment, but even things like highlighting Dennis Haysbert’s appearance would be nice. Bravo does a decent job with their annotated Housewives episodes; their pop-ups are pretty unobtrusive.

But... the timing was a bitch. I’m sure they scrambled to even get these on the air. History and getting talent to do interviews, even on Zoom and everyone’s schedules freed up, takes time. Maybe they can coordinate some of that for future episodes, especially if this becomes more protracted.

What if they put all of the background info for each episode online and blast it on social media? In the afternoon, they could post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. sort of a "fact file" with everything you need to know to jump into the following day's repeat. A simple graphic that lets you know who the characters will be and what their stories were at the time. After the episode airs, they could post a "here's what happened next" type of thing.

I wonder how much of Y&R from the '70s was actually saved by CBS?  All of it?  Some of it?  I've never heard one way or the other, but have heard that certain other soaps, especially from the early days, have been lost forever.

Totally. That would be next best thing, and there would be a 360 experience online to increase their social media followers. Or in lieu of pop ups, they could promote more live tweets for viewers to follow along with the writers or actors who could share more info about the stories and who’s who (although that’s a bit trickier with varying timeslots in the different markets, but that never stopped primetime live tweets, where the West Coast often gets screwed over).

One of the complaints I see from the smaaaall minority of naysayers is that they’ve seen these episodes before and have no need to see again. Having some extras and maybe some BTS secrets revealed would also freshen them up.

I think those people just have to suck it up lol At this point, it’s reruns or nothing at all. They’ve graciously seen the light and pulled out episodes from over a 30-year span instead of just encores from the last year. Those people should be thankful that we’re getting episodes that they’ve already seen 20+ years ago instead of just two months ago.

God, I remember being terrified at the sound of Victor’s angry voice back when EB really cared enough to actually participate in scenes.

GH is still there up until 1970, I believe. Once ABC completely took over production, they wiped until 1977-1978.

P&G and ABC need their asses whooped for what they did.

I agree. I’m not saying those people need to be catered to. It would just be an additional benefit to having the episodes updated with extras (interviews, informative pop-ups that aren’t intrusive, etc.), which would just be helpful for newer viewers or those of us with shorter memories.

1999: I forgot that Jill and Malcolm were friends and that Jill at one point probably had the hots for Malcolm, wanting him to be the model for one of her campaigns on the men’s line. I hated Jabot dropped their whole men’s line later on.

Jill getting down Malcolm’s pants would have been hotter than whatever she and Ryan had

If they're going to show earlier 30-min episodes, which they probably won't. They could consider showing two consecutive episodes to fill the hour timeslot. Of course these would have to be edited for time, but so are the hour episodes that don't fit into the current run time. I like the idea others have mentioned of having better introductions to the episodes and even including some pop up tidbits to make following the story easier or just some interesting facts.

    • That happens sometimes on cbs/paramount. Just refresh the page and it should work.
    • In a 1997 SOD article, Ehlers mentions that she was asked to return several times, but was surprised she wasn't asked to return for her "mother's" funeral.  This was when she returned for the 60th Anniversary event.

    • It seems obvious based on the initial material that Korte was going to take another foolish run at Jason and Carly a la 2021 and hoped Mulcahey being back would make it work, as he wrote such famous material for Steve, Sarah, etc. I think a couple good dialogue scenes came out of them together very early on, but there was never any denying that Steve and Laura have never had and will never have any romantic chemistry, plus the audience doesn't want it. So they pivoted to her with that useless dayplayer (Brennan) and now here they all are, spinning their wheels doing nothing of value on the show. I do think PM had planned to do much more with Jason's sons and that rivalry/friction, but once he was gone so was Jake. I've rarely seen any of the core mob 3 feel so totally extraneous and directionless on the canvas. Not that I mind. Anything that makes Jason easier to get rid of works for me.
    • I just edited the 1998 SOD Awards & Laura Wright won Best New Character for Cassie on GL. Also Philip & Harley won something of some name for them as a couple & when they finished saying their effusive thanks at the mic, Grant picked Beth up & literally threw her over his shoulder & walked backstage that way. I mean, it's great that Beth Ehlers is a good sport, right?

    • nothing. The story was put on the backburner while they focused on other stuff. I think thats one of the issues i have with the show in that it sometimes struggles with balance as stories will disappear for weeks and then reappear (Chelsea's throuple for example)
    • I HATED Infinity (I could care less about Kyle Sampson and his hanger ons and the dumb Lujack video, and Mindy and Kurt were strong armed into being a fave couple and married off way too soon (Jeva didnt get that big of a wedding.) I did like the Fishing Mystery (despite the changing of history..it was murky enough that it could be fudged) and the Cabin mystery started out good ..I thought Tony was hot and I liked Annabelle, it had supernatural elements but they did not overtake the story (i.e. Reva traveling through time..) and I love a gothic mystery.. however, it was bizarre that nosy Nola wasnt in the mix...she barely seemed interested that her sister in law was psychic, there may be ghosts in her brothers house, etc.  I don't know if there was a behind the scenes issue with Brown and Kobe, or if Long just wanst interested or felt tied up writing for Quola.  I would have had Quint blow up in the cabin instead of Hillary but..The big problem that the end result was...boring. Okay so there are black Spauldings..and they disappeared...so what now? Not only was J gross...(I can't believe the actor IS actually just as obnoxious as J) they made Chelle into an airhead horn dog going after her cousin. Yes, by adoption but still her cousin. I wondered why she was not calling Nola "Aunt" when she first arrived, and they barely acknowledge each other ( I would think Nola would glomb on to mothering her sister's daughter, especially with Stacy not in town, much to Ed's chagrin) but it was in service to...this??? Wait until Chele gets all horny for an angel...oyyyy! No one else in town reacted to Nadine's death,, cause Deas had to have his big dumb over the top reaction scene to Deenie's death. I can't imaging watching that scnene and thinking he was a good actor!

I know, I'm getting the sense they expected Beaty to stay if they were going the rehabilitation route with Abby. A few weeks ago, when Michelle was dressing sexy for her date with J, she let Abby try on a dress and Rick then taught her what dating was like, and she went in and kissed him. They were clearly setting up the Abby/Rick story, but then suddenly it has pivoted to Rick falling back in love with Annie and trying to convince her not to go to Josh since he and Reva are secretly meeting at the cabin (Annie is getting unhinged here). But with Rick focused on Annie again, it would have left room for Abby to work with Brent, had Beaty stayed (at least this is what I'm assuming based on what I'm seeing). Rick is also now in Blake's orbit - they both just got in a bar fight post-Ross/Amanda kissing and Annie rejecting Rick's advances. They're together and Blake is now coming onto Rick while they drink... uh oh.
    • She is truly in such a delusional state that it's hard to know what's true but I'm sure there are some easter eggs in there. I am very curious to see how they utilize Leslie now that everybody knows who she is. If they do go with a connection to Anita in someway that would definitely be interesting. Anita was the first and only person so far that Leslie seemed intimidated by.
