Nikki, Ashley (that wig...) and Victoria's highlighter yellow hair in this 2002 episode is bothering me so much.

I hate what they did to Olivia in this story. Your best friend is battling cancer so you sleep with her husband. That's not even in her character. Her wig in this episode is also tragic.

Cassie was always such an oddly written child. How old is she here? 10? What 10 year old says something like "I thought you had something on your mind, mom." Like what? Camryn Grimes is a cutie though. Killing Cassie to keep Nick and Sharon "young" was a huge mistake, it's just allowed the characters to continue acting like teenagers for 15 years.

What was Phyllis pissy about at the wedding? I'm guessing her scenes with Jack were excised.

I've always thought inter-cutting Victor and Nikki's vows with Ashley admitting Victor is Abby's father was masterful. The story is icky and offensive but they rung every drop of drama possible out of it. That's what I miss most about Y&R, they would hit every beat no matter how long it took.

There's virtually no difference in airtime allowance from 2013 to today, but the cuts from the 2013 are far more noticeable than the one that just reaired since a lot of the lines were quickly spliced together (or just cut completely), and the pacing as a result of the cuts just seemed far more unnatural than the one aired in 2020.

This was around the time Diane and Phyllis had been feuding, and I believe Diane had set fire to the Jabot pool house and wanted to frame Phyllis for it. Phyllis' lack of engagement in this episode gave viewers the impression that she had something to do with this.

All that Barbie yellow hair.

When I saw Ashley... yikes!

As time has gone on, I think killing Cassie was just as bad as Maureen on GL.  We should have seen her grown up and react to just how awful her parents were at times.  Instead we skipped having her as a teen so Sharon and Nick could seem eternally 29.  Having kids never stopped Victor and Nikki from being a mess.

If they had any sense, they would have seen her sparking on screen during that time and just allowed her to own her villainy. Just make her a cold, cruel, and vindictive (yet pathetic and human) Cersei Lannister type. An heiress thirsty for the throne and willing to do anything to protect her inheritance. But that would force them to rethink their “best-laid plans” for their idea of what Y&R looks like. As the eldest daughter of Victor, they see her as a leading lady full stop, and she must be likable/rootable. (Maybe they feel like a woman with Victor’s claws would be a turnoff?) They must have had data that shows audiences like her the way she is, and I’m sure the popular Billy Miller pairing earned her a lot of goodwill. How else to explain why she’s been thrusted in our faces for so long?

    • Thanks. I'm glad we have some fan memories of these years as this is such a typically snide take on the genre. It's also poorly written and reminds me a great deal of the tedious "snark" recaps that became popular in the '90s. The end in particular. The 1979/80 stuff I have seen is much more polished than a number of soaps at the time. It was very easy to watch and not too bogged down in past story.  Margo is played by Ann Williams, who was on what seemed like every soap. I think she said Margo was her favorite role.
    • And the rating 'wars' continue...hehe.
    • Well, it was fun while it lasted for Rebecca Herbst. Le sigh.
    • I am wholeheartedly enjoying this show. I just haven't been able to post as much as I used to. But yes, this episode needs to be submitted for the EMMYs and there needs to be wins. I better NOT see Y&R, DAYS, or B&B winning in categories over BTG. I feel like the only show that is giving BTG an ounce of competition this season is GH.
    • I never thought the day would come, but too much MM for me.
    • I think it may be that the character was brought in for a specific purpose and then became popular with viewers, and the show didn't know how to respond.  The choice to pivot away from Simon/India may show that you are right and they didn't care for her...although pairing them up may be another sign they didn't care for her. I don't connect well with this period but it does make me happy seeing some of these characters before the great purge and some of the surprises - I'd forgotten the wonderful Maureen O'Sullivan popped up to be bumped off. So typical of soaps by this point, but it doesn't grate as much as later on when Y&R would bring on any random cast member from Small Wonder. I'm also amazed at this time at just how much money the show must have had. The costumes for the Founder's celebration in summer 1984, or whatever it was, looked gorgeous.
    • Which officially started to feel that way today with them hearing each other out as they confronted each other at the same time.    Same. He was even catching himself when he was about to go overboard or do those tics that people don't seem to like. He failed a bit at the end, but he carried. It makes me think about a month back when it was discussed that the actor was better in other things he's been in. And I questioned then if that meant that he was playing Martin more intentionally. I questioned that briefly again today because he was giving.
    • I really like the actress who plays Margo. Don't know  her name. I'm so hesitant to google anyone because I don't want to know the length they were on the show. I've watched two episodes and I have to say that the show does not feel as dated as other shows. I tried to watch Ryan's Hope a few weeks back and some of the acting was a bit rough. EON is a lot more natural which amuses me considering it's a mystery/thriller show.
    • She’s INCREDIBLE. I’m so glad you enjoyed this my friend.
