True. But I do feel they tried with her when she was first cast. But it devolved into this cold controlled heroine who, even in anger, couldn't raise her voice above a breathless whisper.

The audience has known Paul a long time, I don't think they'd buy it.

At that point, Villy was the shows signature couple and extremely popular. She had just won and Emmy. I'm sure she knew her worth.

Yeah, it would have been Caden.

I mean, that’s some cojones. I just imagine doing an interview in my own profession in which I not only admitted that I just plain didn’t do my job because of some petty nonsense but I also had to be reprimanded for it. I suppose at that point she knew she was a lifer and that very few people read the soap media. And I guess in the small insular world of soaps, Daytime Emmys (which don’t even air on TV anymore) still matter.

I guess she rightly wagered that, in protest of what she thought was unfair treatment of Billy Miller during his contract negotiations, she could leverage BM/Villy fans on social media to push DT out while doing her own bit onscreen to make sure it looked like he failed. It was smart calculation on AH’s part, and now she’s survived Villy.

Soaps nowadays operate by listening to fans too easily and letting fringe fanbases dictate story instead of letting the person in charge actually create and come up with story.

Cane and Lily breaking up last year was a long time coming and was very slow moving (this is the one time where Sussman's writing style came in handy)... but now they're back together with Cane being blame free?!?!?!  Makes no sense whatsoever except to satisfy a very hostile fan base.

Fringe fanbases have destroyed shows in the past i.e. "Manny" and "Gush" fans over at GL, "Bratie" and "Nuke" fans at ATWT etc. Not too sure why Lame or Villy even have fanbases to even begin with unless its manufactured hype from the folks on in the control room.

Sussman did what needed to be done with Cane and the character actually became legitimately interesting as a heel. So of course the network and Young walked it all back because they jealously guard any small fanbase in this dying genre. See also: ABC's inexplicable obsession with Julian and Alexis on GH despite a tiny fanbase. Any port in a storm.

Billy and Victoria probably should've ended with Miller gone. I don't much like her in the role but getting rid of Amelia Heinle is a pipe dream at this point and has been for a long time. Fantasy is not a viable strategy, so you have to move on.

Y&R never tried with AH's Victoria. Within six months she went from A stories to an afterthought love triangle with Brad & Sharon and making faux reliquaries.

That's not the point. If Y&R HAS to do a Big Little Lies story it has a couple with an established enough past played by strong enough actors that would make such a storyline relatively plausible even if the original story was OOC.

At the very least it wouldn't be as time consuming & utterly character destructive as what's currently happening between Victoria & JT.

I like AH fine as an icy villainess, but the problem is they want her to be a romantic, flawed heroine who can carry the entire show on her back, and that’s beyond her abilities. She’s not a Laura Wright who will give it her all no matter what. Or GT who sometimes brings it so hard that it results in things like the Hair Flip Heard Round the World. Amelia will do the bare minimum and sometimes not even that.

The problem is that the show then keeps characters like Cane around to help fulfill it's 40+ Straight White Male Lead role because Morrow can't carry the show.

The same thing has happened to Victoria which is why she's reduced to baby rabies and feuding with Abby instead of running Newman.

If Victoria & Nicholas were played by actors who would carry Y&R then the show wouldn't regularly relegate them to pointless secondary & tertiary relationships/stories.

How many times have posters at SON complained about Nicholas not having any purpose? Or Victoria's only story about her relationship with Billy?

    • It seems like they may have been going in one direction for Andre and then changed their mind. He had this player/bachelor thing going at first where he was messing with Dani, seemed to be feeling Eva, and then somehow smitten by bland Ashley of all people. I feel like Ashley was supposed to be the one that finally made him want to be with someone and settle. The way he talked her up in those earlier episodes was really confusing. The wonderful, amazing nurse Ashley and conveniently she's unattainable because she has a partner, but he can't stop thinking of her and takes these busted pics of her. It was a mess. However, it all seems to have been dropped. I honestly feel like Andre can go. That may be an unpopular opinion but I don't need his breathy final syllable to be content with BTG. It's always like "There's gotta be another wh-ahyy"
    • This is where McLaibey falls apart. It becomes clear that McTavish had not thought past Brent/Marion...so the energy drops and she starts throwing things at the wall (Blakes twins, Lonatrat.)   Fans HATED this funeral. Everyone is mad at everyone else, which is fine, the death of a beloved community figure would give people a reason to come together...(Quint and Nola could come together at least for  a bit to support each other, Nola and VAn could finally admit they kinda, sorta like each other) Its just an example of McTavish's mean writing.   I have a feeling they were going to make Dahlia Frank's kid but they chickened out. Making Tina a prostitute didn't help, they could have been lovers when they were young but felt society pressure to part. Marcus took over David's role (you can't have two young black men at that time...)   Get used to it...this will happen, the same storyline over and over until the end.
    • Does anyone happen to have a recording or any footage of Jennifer’s funeral?
    • It's such a shame that the conflict couldn't be resolved in a mature way between the two actors.. especially since Albee was a bigger asset for the show in terms of character and his popular will they/won't they pairing with Deborah Saxon. One of the things about Edge was that it was just as popular with male viewers as it was with women.  It's one of things I think the show forgot in the final year or two with the deemphasis on the male characters.
    • Daytime Confidential did a podcast of the worst mothers in soaps and here were their lists.  5.Felicia Scorpio 4.Reva Shayne 3.Dina Mergeron 2.Helena Cassadine/Shelia Carter 1.Brooke Logan Dishonorable Mentions- Stephanie Forrester,Ann Douglas, Phyllis Summers and Joanna Manning Joshua 5.Anna Devane 4.Diane Jenkins 3.Ava Vitali 2.Shelia Carter 1.Brooke Logan Dishonorable Mentions-Alexis Davis, Felicia Scorpio, Eve Donovan, Heather Webber, Natalia Ramirez, Stephanie Forrester, and Ruth Martin Luke 5.Natalia Ramirez 4.Diana Coville 3.Helena Cassadine 2.Alexis Davis 1.Arlene Vaughn Dishonorable Mentions-Stephanie Forrester Now for my comments. Wonder what Ruth Martin ever did to this guy?!!! I mean Ruth Martin? I don't get it. Next, IMO they are just picking on Eve Donovan. Who is Dina Mergeron? Same question  Joanna Manning? Diana Colville Is that because of the bad DAYS retcon of her being Leo Stark's mother? All of the rest, CO-SIGN!

    • I don't really care about what the men are wearing, or not wearing.   What I care about is focusing on the writing and character development for each of the male characters. Andre really doesn't have a lot of character development that sets him apart from the other male characters except that he seems content to be degraded and mistreated by the elitist Dani.  I would like to know why a good looking younger guy like Andre would willingly be at the mercy of an emotional vampire such as Dani.   Martin, on the other hand, seems to have decent character development.. and it is partly due to how the actor chooses to recite his lines.  Martin was raised in a very privileged household and probably went to the best schools... so it makes sense that he would come across as thinking he was above everyone else.  Most people raised in a upper class situation as the Duprees would view themselves as better than others (it's the same trait Dani seems to employ on those she feels superior to). It makes me wonder how Nicole came out of that family being so warm and nurturing  when her family dynamics seemed very appearance oriented.
    • I know, right. I after just re-reading the thread, I'm like ooppph!
