It's a shame too because Hillary needs a friend and Phyllis or Chelsea could be it, but this show just refuses to use these characters well. I'd much rather see them in friendships and business rivalries than keeping a guy.  That could come later, but build the relationships in other ways first.

While I don't mind it occasionally, when it happens THIS often with SO many sets of females, I find myself yelling "In what world would these two even TALK to each other???"

With Mariah and Hilary, I also hate the desperation Mariah shows -- initiating conversations to discuss Devon, showing off her photos with Devon, etc. It's just cringeworthy.

Can ANY reason make sense out of Tessa and Zack knowing each other and keeping it quiet? Are we supposed to believe Tessa has no idea Zack is involved in the sex ring?

And how bad off is this sex ring if Rainbow Girl Crystal is their best hooker -- you know, the one who runs off, gets scared, hates her job....yeah, those kinds of girls make awesome hookers.

Exactly.  The only reason women talk to each other anymore on this show is about the man that is currently humping them.  Or one they want to hump.  Hell, look at the Phyllis/Lauren/Michael scenes last week (or 2 weeks ago.  the days tend to run together) - it was all about Phyllis complaining about how much time Billy spends with Victoria.  No mention of Fenmore's and that online dressing room crap they peddled a few months ago.  I suppose that the department store is back to being profitable!  Macy's and JCP could learn a few things from these people

The Hilary/Cassiah scenes this week have been particularly horrible.  Hilary playing the heartless bitch and poor ol goodie two shoes Cassiah.  Ugh.  Honestly, these are supposed to be professional writers?  I think they should take a look at some old school soap heroines like Rita Bauer.  Brigitte Reardon.  Hell, even on their own show with Nikki.  No one is interested in one note characters, "good" or "bad"...

I sorta-kinda liked Tessa initially but she is getting on my last nerve.  And those googly eyes she makes when Zac walks in a room are truly WTF moments.  You're right - if they do know each other, why keep it a secret?  Hell, why was she keeping the fact Crystal was her sister a secret for so long?  It makes no sense.  If she truly has no idea about his role with the sex ring, that's even more of a non-reason for them to act like they don't know each other.  If she does know, no one else does (apparently not yet anyway) so again, why act like y'all don't know each other.  Unless Tessa is involved in the sex ring as well?!?!  Which would be .  Jeez, I've given myself a headache trying to make sense of this crap.

I don't get the Tessa character or the fascination the show has with her. I don't hate all newbies but she literally does nothing for me. I don't give a [!@#$%^&*] that some unknown character that's her sister is in the sex ring. I don't care that she knows Zack. I don't care that she loves Mariah. I just don't care about this bitch at all.

At this point, they're writing her so badly that it doesn't matter to me.  I flove Mishael, but clearly the show is not invested in her character.

+1  Yaaas!

+1 It has really gone downhill in record time.

^True

However I gotta say I'm loving the fact that Sally has Sharon and Nick teaming up to uncover the truth in this sex ring story. It's obvious where her loyalties lie, as she's been hinting at a possible reunion between them (further in the future) since she started.  Plus Sharon is the only way I can stomach Nick these days as I have zero investment in him and Chelsea and I'm not inclined to go through Nick's 1000th time feuding with Victor.

So are Cane and Hillary frienemies ????

I don't get the "oh my gosh the show is so bad now" outcries. This is the same boring drivel we were getting when this regime first started. You get 3 or so weeks of decent character interactions and mini arcs that end up leading nowhere truly interesting. Rinse lather repeat.

I agree that Tessa is the worst of all the newbies. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to care about this girl or for her forced angst when she's been given nothing but a red carpet roll out from all of Genoa City's elites. I honestly can't wait for them to chicken out on this lesbehonest story (you know its going to happen) and write her off. She sucks and can take bland Zack the pimp with her.

Juliet and Hilary could have been a great pair, but for whatever reason they laced every interaction with Hillary attacking and threatening her out of nowhere. I could never buy them as genuine friends now which sucks because Hilary needs a female companion (I guess the stuff with Phyllis works but meh) and so does Juliet if she's going to make it on the show past this pregnancy.

    • Santa Cruz Sentinel, 5 November 1981 What is Mel Ferrer doing in a late-night soap opera? Having fun, he insists. If Elizabeth Taylor can make a guest appearance on "General Hospital," why can't Ferrer star in "Behind the Screen"? He's doing just that each Friday on CBS's answer to Johnny Carson. "Behind the Screen" may be the ultimate in the peculiar art that has spread from the daylight hours into prime time ("Dallas," "Flamingo Road") and now into the insomnia period. The new once-a-week half-hour is a soap opera about a soap opera. The cast: Ferrer, a powerful Hollywood promoter; Janine Turner, star of the serial "Generations" and victim of Ferrer's manipulation; Joanne Linville, her crippled, ambitious mother; Michael Sabatino, a serious actor slumming in "Generations;" Joshua Bryant, his father and producer of the series; and more. "When they sent me the script," said Ferrer, "I was immediately interested because David Jacobs' name was on it. David created 'Dallas,' and I am a mad 'Dallas' fan. I think Larry Hagman has made a creative and inventive character out of J R. and I have an eye for Sue Ellen (Linda Evans)." Ferrer discovered that taping a halfhour weekly show is no easy chore. The "Behind the Screen" cast rehearses at CBS Television center on Friday, tapes on Saturday and Sunday. Reason for the weekend taping: "Behind the Screen" uses the stage occupied by "Archie Bunker's Place" during the week. The series came along at just the right time for him, Ferrer said. "I had been living in Switzerland and making three pictures a year Italian, Spanish, French, German, English," he explained. "Production in Europe has become very tight, except in Germany. In Italy there is very little money to finance films. "So it seemed like a good time to resurface here. I have an avocado and lemon ranch in Carpinteria (80 miles northwest) that I wanted to look after. And I'm developing 'Peter Pan' at Paramount." Ferrer has long held the film rights to the James Barrie classic, once planned it for his then-wife Audrey Hepburn. For a time Mia Farrow was to star. Now producer Ferrer has a revolutionary idea: Peter Pan will be played by a boy. "But not Ricky Schroeder," he added. "I have already talked to Ricky, but he is already too old to play Peter. "I have seen all the Peters in recent times Jean Arthur, Mary Martin, Sandy Duncan. While they are wonderful, they are not what Barrie intended. Our film will be done from the original play, not as a musical comedy."
    • Yes we have seen Dani/Andre, Doug/Vanessa, Ashley/Derek and Naomi/Jacob in bed but no Martin/Smitty. And Chelsea's 3 way involvement has consisted of about 3 scenes at the Hideout before it was over.
    • Thanks Bold!  You finally have your first year of YR ratings coming, which completes the ratings for the entire run of YR! I look forward to the day that happens with Days in the 1965-1966 batch, but that will probably be a few years away. A lot of work, but a lot of fun chronicling the history of daytime TV ratings, preemptions and specials!!

    • Well, no new episode tomorrow, but you should do a catch up. It's worth it!
    • *Gavrilo Princip has entered the chat* I haven't watched BTG in approximately two months because of the busy season at work, but now it's summer, and I'll have time to get back into it. Do y'all think that I should do the 21st century binge-watching thing and attempt to catch up on everything I missed or should I do the traditional soap thing and just start watching again tomorrow and figure everything out from there?
    • A few days late but this made me holler so bad and immediately took.me back 29 years when I first saw this. I still remember thinking Rick and Phillip were going hold each other and dance together LOL. Rick being there at least makes some sense as he was A-M’s second cousin and the show still at least recognized he was half Bauer, at least until Hearst left.  The whole Universal Studios wedding was over the top. I think someone wanted A-M and Lucy to be the next GL super couple but once Hearst left the A-M recast flopped and both were gone by early ‘97 with Lucy never appearing ever again.    Love the rest of your post, summer 1996 was the first time GL left me feeing…greatly underwhelmed until it inspired righteous indignation on my behalf once we get to the Gilly twist.
    • You're right. I think she was seen as too subtle or reserved.  As @soapfan770I liked Sheila on LA Law but she wasn't needed here, especially as Charley as a character only made sense with a more reserved and less conventionally attractive actress.
    • That's certainly one way to put it!  What blather. Kind of tells you they knew it was going to fail. I guess they were just throwing anything at the schedule and hoping they would be pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the article.
    • I would guess it's down to Kate Oates. Bowden is very much her type of leading man. She repeated all the stories she did on Emmerdale with his Ben.  I also think EE has become conservative enough that only a white, straight-acting gay man is going to get story.
