How To Get Away With Murder: Discussion Thread

Finally finished the episode and it was good. The endings still make me sit there and go o_O even more than the actual case. I liked that she finally remembered laurel's name by the end of the episode and you most definitely have to watch out for the quiet ones. So they're saying the motive for the daughter killing the wife is that she found out that the father killed her birth mother?

I was weak at Liza's character when she was saying that she's nice and thus people think it is ok to talk to her and ask her questions.

There are no flashbacks boo. There is present day (the students being hired, defending the client of the week, Violas affair, ongoing murder mystery of the student Violas husband may have been having an affair with) and then the flash FORWARDS to the night that Violas husband gets murdered, the students hiding the body, Wes/Rebecca meeting in the hotel room.

ETA: I guess the "present day" stuff could be seen as a flashback from the murder of the husband stuff, but still there are only two timelines here.

Like Scandal, the case-of-the-week stuff is usually boring and the better stuff is the season arc.

There's only two timelines. The present is when the husband is dead. The past is when he's alive. I don't see how that's so confusing.

It's confusing because the "past timeline" is the main timeline. When the show catches up and forwards us to the future/general timeline people will get it more. As it stands, these "flash forwards" as they are, aren't doing too much for the story other than to shock the viewing audience with a Shonda Rhimes mandated "cliff hanger." She hasn't built the audience up to these shocking stories and as such there is little pay off other than shock value. Reminds me of Nip/Tuck in it's last seasons.

All in all I think these cases would work better if they segued some character development and made some analogies to the trials and the characters we are viewing. As it stands the characters are just there to do shady things and help guilty clients go free. There is no character study, or real internal conflict -- no bleeding to tell us who these characters truly are. It would work better if there was some kind of investment being made by these characters within these procedural episodes, otherwise there is no purpose. They started building something with that one female character who has morals, but what else is behind her? I guess we have 20+ more episodes to find out, but still.

I'm an easily confused person! In reality ish that shouldn't be confusing is to me when it comes to television. Then you have neighbor girl who seems like she can't bloody stand Wes and his attempts to try and start something up, no matter if that be friendship or something more and NG rebuffs him... then at the end of the episode she's kissing him and telling him to not leave her while in a seedy motel. You tell me that's not confusing when I don't even know when these things take place.

Second episode was good but I can see how some thought it was a retread of the first. Still though I find the legal cases to be interesting. I can't decide if I like how open and front and center the gay character is but at some parts I was little "eye rolling" cuz it seemed it was taking away from the main plot.

Agreed about the time line. I'm confused as HELL. I have no idea what's going on as far the murder mystery.

I'm gonna need them to resolve that quickly.

    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.

    • Lol.  I love that this board still allows misinformation from a bad source.
    • Thanks @kalbir what a time to have enjoyed the peak of the primetime soaps. Haha you’re good. The only complaint I have with Lorraine’s death as I mentioned recently in the FC thread was it was overkill, and all we got Apollonia. If a pregnant woman had to be killed off, I would’ve chosen just killing off Robin instead in some freak accident or in the explosion at Richard’s to save us from us that disaster lol.    Did Hotel have a cliffhanger that year? I imagine if Hotel had been soapier we would’ve had cliffhangers like the hotel catching on fire or bombed by an ex-lover of Christine. Peter pisses everyone off and is shot in his office. Or a major Golden age star like a Olivia de Havilland shows and tells how she originally owned the Hotel and how Victoria Cabot & Laura Trent stole it from her but now she owns it etc.
    • The whole AMC 2.0 pulled it together in mere weeks to get a show up and running, with scripts and a cast.

Ginger Smith seemed really passionate about being in the executive producer position, and I think she really did a fantastic job in six weeks. It was just well done.
    • I totally didn’t pick up on that. Just perfect! I don’t get the Maurice Johnson hate around here at all. He didn’t take me out of the scenes at all. I understood everything he was portraying. It was great. I do wonder if there will be a personality shift with the new actor, whom I’m still not excited about. Exactly. Right? I’m in the exact same boat as you. Agree with most of this except I never found anything off with Ted, didn’t suspect a thing. I just watched yesterday’s episode and it was one of the best soap episodes I’ve seen in a very long time. I was enthralled the entire time. Just fantastic.
