-1/2/68-1/31/68. Tracy gets even more interested in Johnny when she learns how rich Henry is. Meta meets Sarah. Paul remembers, with regret, that he convinced Peggy to lie to Johnny and tell him she didn’t love him so that he wouldn’t be so persistent on getting married. Leslie warns Ed not to worship her father and to be his own man. Sarah signs a contract to stay at Cedars for a year. A group of hoodlums comes to the ER after a knife fight. A guy named Marty Dillman is in the worst shape and Ed saves his life in surgery. Joe and Ed call a truce and bury the hatchet. Marty is revealed to be a rich guy. Stephen offers Ed the job of being his assistant and Leslie is afraid Ed is going to turn into a clone of her father. Bert is excited that Mike wants to come home. Marty is interested in Peggy but she’s not interested in him at first but then he starts to grow on her. Marty claims he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time but he’s hiding the fact that he is the head of a gang. Johnny thinks he’d rather be a psychologist than a doctor.
-2/1/68-2/29/68. Stephen makes Ed his resident and Ed is already neglecting Leslie in favor of her father. Marty gets mad when George is reluctant to give him the inheritance money from his dad due to his delinquency. Marty plays Dr. Jekyll when he’s pursuing Peggy and Mr. Hyde when he’s with his gang. Bill fills Leslie in on the family dynamic of Mike being Bill’s and Ed being Bert’s, the animosity between Bert and Mike, Bill and Ed and the closeness of Mike and Ed. He also fills her in on Mike’s history with Pat Randolph and tells her that Mike is coming home soon. Marty brings Peggy home to meet his mother Claudia. Marty starts coming on too strongly sexually for Peggy’s style. Maggie Scott is coming from New York to Cedars to be treated for an illness. Stephen wants Ed to talk to Peggy about it but Ed, still bitter at Maggie, refuses. Leslie, tired of the unforgiveness Ed and Peggy have towards Maggie, decides to take matters into her own hands.
-3/1/68-3/29/68. Leslie implores Peggy to forgive Maggie. Peggy goes to see Maggie but with reservations. Bill goes to see Maggie at the hospital, with Bert’s full knowledge, but has a fight with Ed when he walks in on them. Maggie rebukes Ed for trying to forbid Bill from visiting her and for not helping Peggy to reconcile with her. Maggie is diagnosed with colon cancer and Dr. Jackson orders a surgery. Maggie tells Peggy that she came back to have time with Peggy in case she dies. Peggy pretends to forgive Maggie based on the encouragement Marty gave her to fake it. Bert visits Maggie and offers her friendship. As she prepares for surgery, Maggie tries to make Peggy understand what happened with Bill Bauer. Peggy starts to genuinely understand and forgive Peggy and wants a new start with her. Marty later tells Peggy to forget about her mother as he’s forgotten his own and the rest of the out of touch older generation. Leslie is concerned that Ed is becoming obsessed with his career. Bill goes to the hospital to be with Maggie before her surgery. Stephen discovers the cancer is malignant and has spread but wants to end the surgery after the obstruction is removed. Ed pushes for more radical surgery to try to save Maggie’s life. Stephen disagrees but lets Ed take over. While waiting, Peggy shares her remorse for having cut off her mother and her desire to live with her again. Maggie goes into cardiac arrest and dies on the operating table. Ed blames himself for Maggie’s death.
-4/1/68-4/29/68. Peggy is appalled by Marty’s insensitivity about her mother’s death. Ed’s confidence as a surgeon is shaken by Maggie’s death under his hands. Bill thinks failure will help Ed grow up and realize he’s not a god. Sarah has moved back to Chicago and given Tracy her apartment. Leslie invites Bill over to talk about her concern for Ed. Ed comes home early and he and Bill have it out. Bill finally lets Ed know how he feels about him and tells him he needs to grow up. An irate Ed throws him out. Stephen tells Ed to get his act together and if he doesn’t show up for surgery the next day he will replace him. After an encouraging talk from Marty, whose life Ed saved, Ed rallies and tells Stephen he’ll be back in surgery with him. Bert tells Leslie how glad she is that Mike and Hope are coming back home and recounts to her Mike and Julie’s problems. Bill goes to Paul for a check up as he’s experiencing stomach pains. Mike comes back home with Hope and meets Leslie. Mike and Ed catch up and Mike tells Ed his affair with Pat Randolph is over. Mike and Leslie take an immediate liking to each other. Bert and Mike reconcile. Leslie’s fusses with Ed due to his neglect of her over his career and his insistence on not having children. Tracy pushes Johnny into getting engaged. Bill’s abdominal pains worsen so Joe has him check into the hospital for tests.
-5/1/68-5/24/68. Mike calls Ed out on his self-righteousness. Ed reminds Mike he didn’t have to go through what he had to with Bill. George learns that Marty is lying about getting his law degree soon and he breaks the news to Claudia, urging her not to let Marty have any of his trust fund money. Bill goes in for exploratory surgery which was Ed’s decision. Joe is upset with Ed because he unethically told Bill that’s what he needed even though Joe is his doctor. The exploratory surgery reveals appendicitis which was missed due to a misaligned appendix. Claudia confronts Marty with the knowledge that he’s not really graduating and her fears of him being drafted. Marty assures her he has intent to graduate although he’s lying. Bill offers Leslie a job at his PR company but Ed forbids it.
-5/27/68-7/2/68. Leslie confides in Bert that she’s going to try to get pregnant whether Ed wants a child or not. Paul is determined to get Johnny and Peggy back together and talks her into going to Johnny’s. When she arrives, however, Tracy is there and lets a devastated Peggy know Johnny has just given her an engagement ring. Mike joins Leslie and Hope on a picnic when Ed stands them up for a work dinner. A client of Bill’s sees a picture of Tracy and says she looks just like a girl he knew in Oregon named Charlotte Waring. Bert tells Bill she hopes Mike finds a girl like Leslie. Marty seduces Peggy by getting her to open up about her broken heart over Johnny. Bert warns Leslie that a baby won’t be a substitute for Ed. Tracy tells Bert and Leslie she’s planning a September 9th wedding because that’s Johnny’s birthday. Guilty over her sexual encounter with Marty, Peggy rebuffs Marty. Marty, wanting to move out of Claudia’s house, demands to see his father’s will.
-7/3/68-7/31/68. Papa, Bill, Bert, Mike, Ed, Leslie and Hope celebrate the 4th of July. Leslie tries to encourage Ed to get closer to his father but Ed’s not interested. Bert starts to agree with Leslie’s dislike of Tracy after Bert agrees to help Tracy with her wedding and then quickly declines her help and tells her she needs spiritual guidance after getting to know her better. Tracy, plagued by nightmares and a guilty conscience, takes Bert’s advice and goes to church to pray where she meets the minister. Sara McIntyre makes plans to visit Springfield. The first mention of Springfield being the show’s new location. Leslie is elated because she thinks she’s pregnant. Peggy goes to Tracy to tell her that she’s in love with Johnny but quickly regrets it and runs out embarrassed. Leslie is disappointed to learn she’s not pregnant and Peggy is panicked because she suspects she is.
-8/1/68-9/8/68. Claudia tries to push Marty and Peggy together as a couple. Peggy tells Marty that she’s pregnant. Leslie was seen by a friend of Ed’s in another city. Ed thinks she was seeing another man because Leslie won’t tell him that she was at a doctor getting a pregnancy test. Marty fakes affection towards his mother to get more money out of her. Claudia acknowledges that Marty is as cold, selfish and calculating as his father was. Marty pushes Peggy to get an abortion but Peggy says she won’t be a murderer. Mike encourages Claudia to tell the truth to Marty that she’s facing bankruptcy and that there’s no inheritance from his father for him. Sara admits to herself that she wants Paul. Mike realizes he might be falling in love with Leslie and Bill suspects it as well. Bill is hiding from his family the fact that he might have a heart condition. Peggy tells Leslie that she’s pregnant. Flip Malone, Marty’s mechanic friend, recognizes Tracy as Charlotte Waring. A shaken Charlotte denies this in front of Marty but later admits to Flip alone that she changed her name and tells him to keep quiet about it. Marty gets the name Charlotte Waring out of him. Bert encourages Bill to try to make amends with Ed but their talk quickly turns into another fight that, this time, is physical. Bill has congestive heart failure and ends up at Cedars. Ed is racked with guilt and remorse as Bill’s life hangs in the balance and he starts to drink. Stephen flies back to Springfield from Europe when he hears the news about Bill. Peggy wants Marty to marry her just to give her child a name but Marty doesn’t want to. Dr. Jackson tells Ed he wants to perform a heart transplant on Bill but Ed is against it.
-9/9/68. First 30-minute show. Stephen Jackson and Paul Fletcher argue in Dr. Jackson’s office. Paul is upset that Stephen is pushing for a heart transplant for Bill Bauer and that he told Ed that Bill needed a transplant. Leslie tries to reassure Ed that Bill’s heart condition isn’t his fault. Ed says he doesn’t agree with Steve that his father needs the transplant and Leslie encourages him to stand up to her father. Tracy and Johnny postpone their wedding due to Bill’s predicament. Leslie angrily confronts her father and declares that she and the Bauers will “win” against him in any argument.
-9/10/68-9/30/68. Ed tells Bert that Dr. Jackson wants to do a heart transplant on Bill and Bert is adamantly against it. Bert, afraid to lose Bill, warns him not to sign anything without telling her first. Marty and Flip conspire to blackmail Tracy. Dr. Gavin Hamilton, a leader in heart transplant operations, is flown in for Bill’s case. Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Jackson both pressure Ed to get Bill’s signature of consent. The pressure Ed is feeling is causing him to drink more and more. Ed caves in to Stephen’s arguments and agrees to allow the heart transplant for his father. As he becomes more in favor of the operation, Ed tries to convince a fearful Bert and fights with Mike who are strongly opposed to the operation. Peggy is angry and offended when Marty offers her a bunch of cash, trying to buy her off. Though she doesn’t love him, Peggy wants Marty to marry her to give the baby a name. Tracy has given the money Paul gave her for the wedding to Marty as hush money so she lies and says that now she just wants a simple ceremony. Ed persuades Bill to break his promise to Bert and sign the paper allowing the heart transplant. Mike tries to help Marty but his bad, rebellious attitude makes it difficult. Marty tries to keep Peggy and Claudia from talking with each other. Marty reluctantly agrees to marry Peggy but says he wants to wait until he’s through with his mystery project. Peggy remarks that Marty, although anti-establishment, cares so little about anything that he couldn’t even be a yippie. Stephen notices Ed’s shaky hands, though he doesn’t realize it’s due to a hangover, and orders Joe to take Ed’s place. Joe can tell Ed’s hungover, however. Tracy hits Sara up for some money and Sara gets suspicious since Paul told her Johnny had hit him up for some money as well. Stephen opens a bottle of Calvados for he and Leslie and remarks on the Paris uprising and how so many events of 1968 have changed the world. Bill is getting scared with his heart symptoms and wants the transplant to come as soon as possible. Bert, sympathetic to Bill, starts to come around to the need for the transplant.
-10/1/68-10/31/68. Peggy is asked to leave the nursing program when the super finds out she’s pregnant. Paul learns and offers Peggy sympathy. The race is on to find a heart donor for Bill. Bert now regrets that she was so reluctant. Marty gets exposed when he walks in on Claudia and Peggy talking. Claudia learns that Peggy is pregnant and Peggy learns Marty has been lying to her about marrying her. Claudia also learns Marty has been lying to her about money. Claudia demands that Marty marry Peggy. Johnny and Tracy get married. Claudia gets Peggy to move into the Dillman home which Marty isn’t happy about. Tracy’s starting to get caught in her web of lies. Ed is being mean to Leslie and Marty is mean to Peggy. Leslie encourages Peggy to hang in there until after the baby is born and then she can do what she wants. Bert tries to be a comfort to Bill, who fears he may soon die but is at peace with it and is thankful for the life he’s had. While Bert prays for Bill in the hospital chapel, a heart becomes available when a donor dies in the ER. Ed gets permission from Stephen to observe the transplant. Bert, Mike and Leslie come together at the hospital to wait out the operation. Mike thanks Leslie for the help she’s been to the family and Leslie, starved for a compliment, eats it up. Bill survives the operation and is now in recovery. After getting Hope to school and having been told the news by Mike, Papa goes to Bert and says, “And there are some frightened fools who say God is dead.” Bert is exuberant but Papa, Mike and Ed are still concerned as they realize how critical the post-op recovery is. Marty keeps pressuring Tracy for blackmail money. Johnny is shocked to find out Peggy married Marty. Peggy is almost sympathetic towards Marty’s attitude when she witnesses how smothering his mother can be with him. In rainy, dreary weather that matches the way Peggy feels on the inside, Marty and Peggy drive to a justice of the peace and get married. Ed continues to be verbally abusive to Leslie and his drinking is starting to get out of hand. He’s also being testy with Mike and thinks Mike is too involved with Leslie. George and Jane have decided to move to California and George is leaving the law firm with Mike. Leslie goes to Mike for advice on Ed as her marriage deteriorates. Mike tries to act nonchalant but, on the inside, he furiously thinks Ed is a fool. On Halloween, Ed throws a tantrum when Leslie takes Hope trick-or-treating.
-11/1/68-11/29/68. Leslie, completely innocent to Mike’s feelings, is shocked to hear Ed’s accusation of Mike using Hope to get to Leslie. Leslie, knowing Ed has told Mike to stay away from his wife, goes to Mike and apologizes for what she thinks is Ed’s irrationality. Mike contemplates moving away from Springfield. Marty and Peggy plan on staying married just long enough to give the baby a name which is ok with both of them since there’s no love lost between them. Ed and Leslie argue once again about having children and Ed is even more adamant against procreating. He passes out after one too many drinks and leaves Leslie to ask her unconscious husband, “What happened to us, Ed? We were such nice people. Once”. Peggy picks up the phone to make a call and hears Marty on the other extension arranging a clandestine meeting with Tracy. Peggy gets the wrong impression and worries about how this will hurt Johnny. Bert tells Ed that she can tell he’s becoming an alcoholic because she’s married to one. Ed’s in denial that he would ever have the same problem his father did, even though his drinking has gotten completely out of control. Peggy is shocked when Claudia threatens Peggy that if she doesn’t stay after the baby is born then Claudia will let everyone know the child was conceived out of wedlock. Marty gets Tracy to steal securities from Johnny’s inheritance and replace them with counterfeits. Marty demands $25,000 from Tracy and Flip demands that Marty double it so he can have half. Sarah starts to notice Tracy’s lies and inconsistencies. Bedridden because of a difficult pregnancy and smothered by a dominating Claudia, Peggy is feeling like a prisoner in the Dillman home and is eager to leave just as soon as she can. Against Claudia’s wishes, Peggy manages to leave the house one evening. Claudia starts to worry when Marty doesn’t come home that night. Leslie goes to Mike to lament her situation with Ed. Mike hugs Leslie which becomes awkward for them. He gives her his handkerchief to dry her eyes with and Leslie absent-mindedly puts it in her coat. Ed discovers the handkerchief, knows it’s Mike’s and goes ballistic and confronts Mike. Bill comes home from the hospital in time for Thanksgiving but Ed is absent from the homecoming family gathering as he’s hitting the bar. A drunk Ed later comes to the Bauer Thanksgiving smashed, causes a scene, and passes out before dinner is served.
-12/2/68-12/31/68. Marty’s been missing for a week now and there’s a missing car at the car dealership he had been working at so the police are now involved. Leslie promises a desperate and hysterical Peggy that she’ll help her get out of the Dillman home. Sara’s suspicious questions to Tracy about the things that don’t add up causes Tracuy to panic that her house of cards is about to come crashing down. Leslie gets Bert to take Peggy into the Bauer home. Hope welcomes Peggy to the family. The stolen car everybody thinks Marty was in is found abandoned. Mike, as attorney for the Dillman family, gets involved with the police investigation. Marty’s dead body is found in a boathouse, stabbed in the neck and with a skull fracture. The police find three letters on Marty’s body, filled with blank paper but addressed to Paul, Sarah and Johnny. Claudia tells the police that Peggy left the house for a while on the afternoon that Marty was killed. Although Peggy is somewhat uncomfortable with Bert due to what happened with Maggie and Bill, Bert tries to get to know Peggy better and starts to see how unhappy she is. The two start to bond. Papa, Bill, Bert, Mike, Ed, Hope, Leslie and Peggy celebrate Christmas. Everyone is grateful Bill’s heart transplant was a success and he has a new lease on life. Mike is trying to fight his feelings for Leslie. Johnny and Tracy celebrate Christmas. Steve Jackson is having a party for the single people at the hospital and Joe expresses interest in Sarah when Steve tells him Paul and Sara are just friends. Joe goes to lunch with Sarah and asks her out on a date for New Year’s Eve. Johnny starts to notice Tracy’s edginess and odd behavior. Joe and Sarah’s date is interrupted as they are called to work at the hospital as Ed can’t be found.
