If the writers took Val's "brain virus" seriously, it could have been interesting to have David play her doctor/teased love interest. Have the first Gary Ewing be the very last obstacle before the "real" Gary Ewing and Val can finally reunite.
And now, a few stray thoughts on the first two-thirds of Season 9 (up through "In Too Deep"):
-- I don't hate the new opening sequence, but man, is it slow, even when there's more people in the credits. I wonder if the sequence would be more fondly remembered if the background was more of a mural rather than just some pretty, ice creamesque art.
-- Abby and Charles' recap conversation includes her mentioning having a business with Jeff. Did they ever say what this business was? Anyway, I guess that explains where she got her bookeeping skills from. The business must have did okay and allowed for networking-socializing; I vaguely remember a line from Season Three where Abby and/or Jeff reminisced about a party (his birthday? their anniversary?) "at the club."
-- I liked the bond Greg had with Jason Avery. If Knots wanted to do one more "Greg's protégé" storyline, Jason would have been a natural.
-- Eileen Barnett was the MVP of the Abby and Charles story. While I wish that Judith realized she's better off without her husband, I can also understand her mentality and I did like the twist that love for Charles was the primary reason for sharing Abby's private conversations.
-- Michael, you dodged a bullet not getting too deep with Jody. Talk about your overly attached girlfriends!
-- I'm in the midst of the Williams family fretting over trying to stay incognito, which is interesting to watch from a modern perspective. I think it's easier now; Pat or Frank would just have to tell Julie's school that they aren't going to sign a release letting her be photographed.
-- The great Tommy Krasker essays remind me that CBS considered doing a spinoff featuring KL's younger characters. Olivia speaking with some affection about Johnny makes me wonder why they bothered introducing Harold. They could have cut the middleman and still did the Olivia with a bad boy storyline. I guess it boiled down to keeping Peter Reckell in reserve just in case they weren't going to pull the trigger on Paige-Greg, but still needing to move forward with Olivia as part of the Lotus Point/drugs drama. Plus, Peter was 16 years older than Tonya Crowe (although I don't think he looked it).
-- Ah, my beloved "pan up from a tree to see the cul de sac" establishing shot! I missed you.
