I think they could have had Adam as being homophobic - not in a fire-and-brimstone way, but more just in a "man's man" way and being concerned about the "right" world for his son. These days you see so many corrupt and morally depraved business titans who clearly have this view. I think David Canary being so charismatic and such a matinee idol helped hide how depraved Adam was.
@EricMontreal22 I never could remember if it was the people who took over for Culliton who dropped the Tim story, but you are right. And I agree killing Frankie was a mistake, which even they realized.
@bongobong The late '90s/early '00s being a hybrid of AW or P&G soaps makes sense now that you mention it. Whatever was going on...2001 may have been one of the strangest years in the show's history.
I do think McTavish properly re-centered the show when she returned. She will always fascinate me as she did understand AMC and loved AMC yet she was like a child with a toy - she loved it so much she repeatedly smashed it to pieces.
I have to admit I am more critical of FMB than some (and I also think that while AMC improved under FMB/Broderick there were key errors which didn't help ratings, like the teens), but I know she had a very tough task during her run. AMC ran into a lot of problems in the late '80s and it took much hard work to turn the show around. In some ways they were lucky that the show kept a prime position for as long into the '90s as it did. Then you had OJ, DAYS, McTavish going off the rails, etc.
