Did anyone ever read the YR novelizations published by Pioneer Books in 1986?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/bookseries/B01LT3QU9Q/ref=sr_bookseries_null_B01LT3QU9Q

I bought a few at the time, as a teen, but didn't save them 😕 Besides YR, they also published Days and Knots Landing, and I was obsessed :)

They are very cool, because they aren't fan-fiction... there's adapted novels based on the actual show scripts themselves. So reading them would be a great way to get a detailed description of the show's plots, starting at '73 through '76 or '77.  I don't have time to read them now... someday...

I was reminded of these books when I saw this guy's website - he read all 14 of Pioneer's Days novelizations! How amazing would it be if there was a similar page detailing all the YR books

That’s actually very cool! I think I heard of the books but always thought it was all a fan fiction type of series maybe based on the characters.

I know, the book cover make it look like fanfic, but here's an explanation that it's based on the actual show...

"The Pioneer Communications series of books began publication in 1986, ten years later. Like the Bantam Books that came before, this second series of novellas offered consumers an expanded glimpse into past events. By then, The Young & the Restless had been on the air for thirteen years, and had aired approximately 2,470 hours of brand new, non-repeating storytelling. Numerous characters had come and gone, and, with such changes,  the  show’s  core-families evolved (the Brooks and Fosters were phased out in favor of the Newmans and Abbotts). For many viewers, the various couplings and un- couplings that came with this evolution made it hard to keep up. For instance, audiences may have forgotten (or never known) that before the Nikki Newman character was firmly ensconced in a love-quadrangle  with  the  show’s  two  leading  men  of  the  1980s,  she  actually spent two years married into a different core-family (the Fosters). Columbia Pictures and Pioneer Communications sought to bridge this gap in the only way open to them in the pre-Internet days: print-media.

I found this January 1982 Role Call from Daytime TV on Facebook. I'm assuming it would be approximately September of 1981.  Does anyone know who Violet, Klute, Decker, and Maggie are?

I haven't read these ones but do have some others--I have the three AMC ones from 1980 that covered 1970s storylines by romance novelist Rosemarie Santini: Tara and Philip, The Lovers, and Erica.  Apparently these started the trend.  Santini isn't a great writer but she's not bad either and they're a fun, quick read that seem to stick closely to the original scripts.  (They go for 20 or so bucks even used so I better make sure I still have my copies as I haven't seen them since I moved in the Summer :P   https://www.amazon.com/Agnes-Nixons-Children-Book-Philip/dp/0515048925/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1544916269&sr=1-2

In the mid 80s/late 80s Pioneer Books launched their Soaps and Serials label (they were a romance book publisher too) I have one of their Y&R books and that seemed to be their most successful with 7 or 8 volumes, but they did a LOT of soaps.  I have their OLTL one, and I think in the back it advertises ones for GL, etc...

Good find! None of those names ring a bell. I went and looked through all the SOD synopses from that time period, but none of those names popped up, so I guess they were all very minor characters.

Very cool! For the YR Soaps/Serials book you have, what name/number is it?

I'm surprised to see that the YR soap/serials cover stories as late as '80/'81!

Here's #12 "Paradise Found", which has this description, which is definitely from Kay's story in late 1980: "Kay had cover to love the simple way of life on this lush, deserted island: no games, no pretenses, no pressures. Just days spent swimming and gathering tropical fruit...and nights spent in the powerful arms of Felipe. At last, Kay had found her own paradise."

https://www.amazon.com/Paradise-Found-Young-Restless-12/dp/1557262519/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1544925439&sr=8-1&keywords=young+and+the+restless+pioneer

#13 "Passion's Pride" has this description, which would be the Victor/Michael/Julia triangle from the first half of 1981 ""What do you want?: Michael demanded. "I'll tell you what I want, man to man." Victor learned forward, a fierce intensity burning in his eyes. "I want my pride and dignity restored-- even if it costs you your life!"

And here is #14 "Free Spirit", which doesn't have a description, but from the cover image, it is clearly the beginning of Victor and Nikki from late 1981

@yrfan1983 I'm thinking possibly secretaries or strippers for the ladies, maybe strip club regulars or bartenders for the men?

haha... Violet, Klute and Decker all sound like people who would hang out with Nikki at the Bayou :)

Hi everyone - I made it back to Paley Center NYC again. I'm running out of old YR eps to watch, but found a couple more. This one is titled "Nikki, Rose, and Vince dump the dead body".  No date given, but I'm pretty sure it's from very late in 1979, right before the show expanded to an hour.  There is a cast listing in the credits, but it's not the full cast, only the cast appearing in this episode.

YRfan23 - the other one I watched was Danny and Cricket's wedding... recap coming soon :)

Here's my summary:

Derek at the Chancellor mansion - he has a flashback to his conversation with Jill, where he tells Jill that her plan to have him sleep with Katherine backfired.  Jill says she is worse off than he is - stuck living at home with her mother, unsure if Liz will kick her out. Derek asks her - do you want me to stop pretending I want to be married to Katherine?

Derek then has another flashback, to his conversation in the mansion with Katherine, in which he asks her to burn the audiotape. He says - if she will burn the tape, it will prove he trusts her.  Katherine says she does trust him - but that she's keeping the tape. It's a symbol to her, of her love and trust.

Leslie asks Jonas if he is satisfied with the type of music she is playing. He said sure. She is annoyed that he isn't more communicative. Jonas says she is more lively since he told her to dye her hair blonde. She says she doesn't feel like a blonde. He calls her "Chris". She can't remember anything about her past. But she likes the "new woman" Jonas is molding her into.

Lucas with Vanessa and Casey. Lucas can't believe Leslie called Vanessa. Vanessa said Leslie called to reassure Lucas, that she's all right, and to say how much she misses Lucas.  Vanessa walks out. Lucas is mad that Leslie didn't say when she's coming home or where she is, and doesnt think his marriage has much hope. Casey thinks Lucas is too fatalistic.

Rose pulls up with her car outside the hotel employee entrance.  Nikki and Vince carry the "john" out to the car. Nikki wants to go home but Rose pulls her in. They drive off.

Derek and Jill at dinner. He tells her that their last meeting was audiotaped. He doesn't know who taped them... it wasn't Katherine, but Katherine does have the tape (but hasn't listened to it). Derek's plan is to make a new tape, and replace it with the first tape. She is skeptical but needs her help. She agrees. Derek almost knocks over a water glass (don't think that was in the script :)

Nikki and Vince in backseat with corpse, Rose driving. Rose has the heat blasting to keep the corpse warm, so cops can't figure out the time of death. Rose tells Nikki this is all her fault.  They dump the corpse in an alley (this is filmed on location).  Car pulls away. A young man walks up to the corpse and steals his wallet. Right then, cops pulls up and chase the young man. END.

Cast:

Derek Thurston: Joe LaDue

Kay Chancellor: Jeanne Cooper

Dennis Cole was SO not Lance Prentiss.

Victoria Mallory was not as good as Janice Lynde in the role of Leslie, but at least she sang like and angel. :)

If Ashley Abbott is gone forever, let's have Jaime Lyn Bauer return as Lorie Brooks.

Does anyone have episodes or clips of Joan Van Ark as Gloria from 2004? I can only find scenes in French or recordings of TV screens.

I wish! I’ve been wanting to relive her time as Gloria as well but I can’t find anything beyond her first scene. She was *so* good as Gloria I hate she left. She brought such depth to the role, she was darker and despite being very humorous I loved that she wasn’t a joke like Judith Chapman’s cartoonish take. Letting Joan go was one of the biggest mistakes they ever made. She was so good with Christian LeBlanc and Greg Rikaart.
