Wow!!! That's super rare and cool! Probably from his personal collection. I had no idea what he even looked like. Love the way this video was staged, with him in character telling the story. Feels like he honors his time on the show considering how he gets into it! If only the clips were longer. His acting is great. I'll need to re-read the SOD recaps. I don't remember reading about a scene with a bear, or him finding religion although I know he was trying to prove he was a fit parent.

Thanks so much

Thanks for finding that. Dick DeCoit....that would have been a perfect 70's porn name.

.

But seriously that was a great clip of him staying in character while showing the vintage clips. If I'm not mistaken, didn't Carolyn Conwell also play Ron's mother before she reappeared as Mary Williams ?

DeCoit also appeared several times in bit roles on Maude during his Y&R stint. They were both filmed at CBS Television City.

Not really an old article but also not current discussion.

McGarry, M., & Hinsey, C. (Eds.). (2024, October 14). The Ultimate Young & Restless Guide: Soap Opera Digest Collector’s Edition. Soap Opera Digest Ultimate Y&R Guide.
pg. 24 About Terry Lester, Lauralee Bell
Digest asks: At the time, Terry Lester, the original Jack Abbott, was vocal that your stories were taking over the show. How did you feel about that?
She replies: "He had a point. His arguments were sometimes the kind of arguments that I would have about a storyline that is on too much. I don't know if this is common knowledge, but he came to the set before he passed away. He knew he wasn't going to be around much longer & he came up to me & said, 'I feel terrible for the things I said.' Of course, I got my job because of my parents & I knew that. Even though it was a little hurtful when he said Y&R was suddenly becoming a teenage show, I understood where he was coming from, so I could never hold a grudge. He didn't have to say this but he told me, 'I want you to know that it was nothing personal toward you. I was really struggling with a lot of things in my life & I never should have done that.' We hugged & it felt like we came full circle."

McGarry, M., & Hinsey, C. (Eds.). (2024, October 14). The Ultimate Young & Restless Guide: Soap Opera Digest Collector’s Edition. Soap Opera Digest Ultimate Y&R Guide.
Pg. 24 again & Lauralee Bell again also, This time about her dad.
Digest asks: Your father was not only the show's co-creator but its Headwriter, hammering out stories in your home in Chicago. What do you remember about that time in your childhood?
She replies: "If we were to walk in (while he was working at his typewriter) he'd stop what he was doing or come in to dinner. So he was always there. The fact that he was in the house never made it seem like he was a busy father. Other writers would be working with him. There would be conference calls going on & the Xerox machine had its own room that would be going off all day long, copying scripts. FedEx would come multiple times a day & he would be constantly editing, then have to reFedEx everything back. For all of the stress, he was such a calm, positive, happy guy. Ratings day was like putting in a new battery for him because it was the acknowledgement of busting his ass & how people are responding. And, despite all of this, it was a very normal childhood to me, because to me my mom was the 'famous one' because of her talk show (The Lee Phillip Show) so we wouldn't walk anywhere without being stopped.

She's very level-headed and honest about it. I like that she said even she thought she was on too much at times. In 1989, the year Terry left, she had three big stories: finding her father in spring, her date rape and the trial that summer, and her mother dying of AIDS that fall. The rape story was one of the best I've seen - she was outstanding and I could honestly argue she deserved a nomination for it. The other two stories I didn't care for as much and could take it or leave it, and all combined it was a lot (though arguably more interesting than the storylines from 1988 about her love life and her having four different guys in love with her). Someone had posted a comment she made at the time of Terry's comment that she was very proud of the stories they did during the teen scene because they covered a number of important social issues. Terry had some legitimate issues with his material (other than the excellent Jabot takeover storyline) but his comments about Lauralee were probably more about hitting the Bell family where it hurts. Sure, she had a lot of airtime but you could also argue a newish character like Cassandra ate the show.

I'm glad they made up and I vaguely remember Jerry Douglas also talking about that visit Terry made to the set when he was ill and saying similar things. It's very sad. It was the perfect role for him and he wish he could have worked it out and stayed.

This is so heartwarming!

I really got a lot out of it. Her attention to detail & anticipating what other people might find interesting shows a pretty good level of acumen, if you ask me. This woman is definitely self-aware & has an excellent eye about her parents, something some people never achieve. I am often quite interested in BTS info about people like Bell Sr & his wonderful wife, Lee. This fits that bill. Glad you also enjoyed.
