Right, there was a bit of "testing out" John and Gina, but never (to my knowledge) Stuart and Gina.

William J. Bell had an annoying habit of simply dropping characters (even important, beloved, core characters) from the canvas without any on-screen justification. I mean, Peggy ceased to exist (for all intents and purposes) and went unmentioned by everyone three separate times. Stuart, Liz, Tommy Horton on DAYS. the list goes on.

Yep... I think maybe Bill B had good intentions, to keep a character around on recurring, but then that robs the character of a proper goodbye.

A perfect example is Marla Adams. She was taken off contract in fall '85, and was put to good recurring use in spring '86 during John and Jill's divorce. But then, poof - the mother of Jack, Ashley and Traci just disappeared.

Tom Hallick who played Brad Elliott said rival networks would scout around and see who was popular on soaps and try to lure them over with the promise of more money, Primetime TV deals etc....He said he left Y&R in 1978 because NBC signed him to an exclusive TV deal which never amounted to anything. He said it was the biggest mistake he had ever made and wished he had stayed on Y&R. He said he was unhappy on Days when they put him on there as a consolation for his crappy contract. He left Days eventually.

IIRCI there was a scene at Jonas’ where Stuart was in the process of selling it to Gina. Kay contacted Jill (Deborah Adair) to meet her there to discuss bringing Stuart and Elizabeth back together. Jill spotted Gina and referred to her as a cute dish.

Patty Weaver who had been popular on Days was lured to Y&R by Wes Kenney and Bill Bell when she left that show. On Y&R she had very few storylines that amounted to much and then pretty much faded into the background. She was mainly used during scenes at her place saying " Table for two" and letting people stay or have sex in that room upstairs. After they foolishly burned her place to the ground, she soon disappeared from the show. At one point they were toying with a Brock/Gina pairing and later a John/Gina pairing, but that was quickly scrapped.

After the aborted romance with Neil Fenmore, Gina was backburnered. She was there to hostess at Gina's and be a talk to, support Danny and Rex etc.

She got a bit of story through her marriage to sleazy Clint, but it wasn't given an A story treatment.

I believe in latter years Patty had some health problems which limited her appearances.

Also she married Jerry Birn, part of Bill Bell's old guard so was pretty much guaranteed a place on the show, i guess.

Here is an interesting photo from 1976 featuring Jeanne Cooper and her soap actress lunch group. The photo includes Rachel Ames (GH), Judy Lewis (GH), Emily McLaughlin (GH), Dorothy Green (Y&R), and Patty Weaver (Days and later Y&R).

Yes she was pretty much recurring most of her run. Birn's daughter played Paul's secretary Lynn for years.

Gina climbing over the prison visitor wall to strangle and punch Clint when she went to visit him in prison earned her a memorable place in Y & R history.. I think I recall Gina crediting Leanna Love's 'I hate men' chant she started for the inspiration to give it but good to Clint.

Neil Fenmore was also one of those "gone characters", I think. He disappeared sometime in 1985 and was never heard of again. Until Jim Storm showed up on B&B as Bill Spencer Sr. and Lauren got news in GC that Neil died and left her Fenmore Department Stores. Therefore, in 1987 Neil's fate was resolved.

Wasn't Carl Williams another Unneeded Father Figure who just vanished like Stuart Brooks and Neil Fenmore?    (In about 1999, Bell & Alden went through that whole agonizing harangue of Cricket running into Carl in the Norfolk airport, and Paul and Mary revealed that they'd been "grieving" over Carl's "death" for many, many years.   But I don't remember Carl Williams ever dying or any grieving.  I was thinking he just vanished in a puff of smoke sometime after the Cassandra Rawlins storyline ended and wasn't mentioned again until the Norfolk storyline.)

How was Patty shooting Jack addressed? That was a pretty crazy thing to do, but then the next episodes I saw were her hanging out with the teen scene (Danny, Lauren, Traci). How did they gloss over the shooting, and how was she written off the show at that point? And wasn't there originally a third Williams brother?

Patty accidentally caused Traci's miscarriage after a jealous fueled argument..and seeing that Danny blamed her..she decided to leave town and start a new.  She was not in perfect mental health when she left.

She also was the one against Paul/Lauren being a couple..more so than mary was...I think after Patty left in late 1984...Bell made Mary into the busybody we all loved and remembered lol

Patty had total amnesia of the entire shooting. I know she had some therapy sessions in the 2nd half of 1983... not sure if she ever did recall the shooting. There used to be YT scenes of Jack and Patty negotiating their divorce, and they both admitted to "making mistakes".

Honestly, I have a feeling the story kinda petered out when Andrea Evans proved to be a "lesser Patty" than Lilibet Stern.

    • There was a scene in the past week or two with Leslie looking at some papers and mementos, which included an invitation or souvenir from Alan's memorial service or funeral -- it was dated as November 2024. Me just guessing but it seems to me that Martin's nightmares about the accident are from something longer ago than November.
    • ah thanks! do you know who the third one was in the blonde? the fifth one i know ive seen before in the brown wig but i forgot, and then ive never seen the psychic one before lol
    • I felt for Ted early on but as the story unfolded it has changed my opinion on him. To know he was cheating while his wife was struggling to give him a baby is a lot to deal with. Plus, this happened ages ago and still he's paying Leslie off and threatening her to leave town.  What really caused me to lose him in this episode was how even though he was busted, he still refused to take responsibility and come clean and the way he talked to Martin and Eva was terrible. To tell Smitty he better get Martin away from him when that is his SON who he used to cover up his affair? That is true dog behavior. Ted seems upset he got caught but I'm not seeing the remorse I would need to want Nicole to forgive him. I'm curious how I'll feel after Ted gets to talk to Nicole but I need him to fix it with the rest of the family as well.
    • I'm sorry. I well remember Jake doing Doris but I have no independent memory of the story around it.  Krystle with a K Lake, sure, both Tony the Tuna stories & NOT.  And, Jake also impersonated a woman named Bunny Eberhardt but he didn't know she was a woman so there was no drag. This weekend I re-watched Kevin & Mac, GH, and my strong impression is exactly what it was when I watched it in real time: They did not let them look very pretty. Of course, I think the best ever drag on GH was Alexis posing as the Q butler.  In a different use of drag at AW one Halloween, Jensen Buchanan went as Charlie Chaplin & Judi Evans went as, I think, a male gypsy.

    • I'm not sure who wanted them to dump REUNION & instead do a "Dallas-like daytime show" but it seems that it def came from NBC to AW through Rauch, so, yes, it absolutely could have been his (cough-another-stupid?) decision!!!! I've just begun the new Lisanti book so maybe I will find out. (I waited for the kindle version to come out.) I would apologize for being so critical & so sarcastic, too, but, well, I'm not actually sorry!  Silverman was NOT a friend to AW.  And, I believe the critique is on point & deserved! I wanted to explain why I think the timing is off for the 90 minute show to be a reaction to the GH Luke & Laura story & its hype. Because, for sure, networks & production companies did react to it! The first 90 minute show was Monday, March 5, 1979.  And, there was some unknown amount of time ahead of that with people arguing about it & then, planning it.  The Luke & Laura wedding was mid-November 1981.  They were on the run from Frank Smith & stayed overnight in Wyndham's Dept. Store early August 1980.
    • terrible at using forums and inserting photos, but jake in another world had a drag persona named doris, anyone know the episode or year? http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/ffad19.jpg
    • Yes, I am familiar with Fred Silverman. Agree, the 90 minute AW a very poor decision by Silverman. I think Silverman was behind the decision to go with Texas.
    • Thanks -- you're doing God's work The Gio reveal was everything I hoped for and more. GH got it right. Head to toe, GM is a stunning physical specimen.
    • I really wonder how they'll handle Netflix's usual long breaks between seasons. That girl is going to grow up fast... makes me wonder if this wouldn't have been a better fit for HBO Max considering they're leaning into a more broadcast style of production model with The Pitt.
    • I agree -- I didn't suspect Ted, either. I think a lot of people are giving themselves way too much credit in predicting Ted's problems

And can I have a different take on Ted here? Yes, he's made a huge mistake with this Leslie debacle, and yes, he has to suffer and pay for it. But does that make Ted a terrible human being? I don't think it does. He made a horrific mistake over 2 decades ago, and as far as we know, he's been a good husband and father since. As far as we know, he hasn't strayed or violated his marriage since. He didn't know that he fathered another child, and thought he "removed" Leslie from his life. I won't blame Nicole if she doesn't forgive him, but I also won't blame her if she decides what they have and what they've had more than makes up for what he did. Ted is getting dragged far more than Bill is on these boards, and I think Bill is MUCH worse as a husband and father. How many times did he cheat on Dani during their marriage? How many times did he do vile things in his role as fixer? How much did he hurt his daughters by screwing their friend and marrying her? With Keith Robinson coming in as Ted, maybe we'll see a character change in direction and we'll discover that Ted has many flaws and always had a dark side. For now, though, I'm inclined to both be angry with Ted for hurting his family while also sympathizing with him. I know what you mean, but I do think that was intentional. So much was going on in that episode, and I think they decided not to let Nicole's reaction be lost in all that. Nicole will get those scenes that you're asking for.
