I swear in 1996 and 1997 80% of Days commercials were the same variation of these John/Marlena/Kristen promos.  "Will this be the week Kristen is exposed?"  It was never the week lol.

I actually completely forgot Franco was a spoiler for Bo/Hope.  JER really gave Bo/Hope some bad material.

I never liked John Aniston saying CaroLYN, since CaroLINE was the love of Victor's life (so you think Victor would know how to pronounce the love of his life's name). But it was never John's fault. No one told him in 1985 to say it CaroLINE. Just like no one today tells people how to correctly pronounce DiMera. I forget which was which, but in the same scene last week I think Amy pronounced it the correct way (DiMAIRa), while her daughter Sophia pronounced it like Lauren Koslow does (DiMEERa), the incorrect way.

That's funny. At least Kate and Maggie were easy enough to say.

Franco is one of those characters who only got interesting not long before he left.

You aren't kidding. I do love this promo, which underlines what you said. Of course, this wasn't the end either, although the last few months of the story, with Marlena and Kristen eating snacks and forced to watch Susan and John via CCTV, are funny enough to me where the further drag out doesn't bother me.

I didn't mean to dump so many promos in here, but that channel has a few others I haven't posted.

Take it from me the Caroline/Carolyn thing is real and someone says it to me probably once a week maybe more.  I will quickly repeat my name out of habit and I will still be called Carolyn.   I just don't know why through all the years someone didn't quietly tell both actors to right the pronunciation and move on like they always said it correctly.

Oh, I loved the promos and the story.  I laughed because they were all vaguely the same like this time Kristen would get caught.  This one you just posted was at least near the end lol.

The story was very well-paced but I think the humor is what helped with the length. Carrie/Austin/Sami ran as long and dragged (I suppose it also helped that Drake Hogestyn was not Austin Peck). JER tried to replicate the formula later on with various Passions stories being stalled out by campy villainesses and comedy sidekicks (namely Beth and her mother), but I don't think it worked as well (frankly I just found Beth creepy, but that's for a whole other thread). Kristen and Susan were the roles of a lifetime for Eileen and she played every moment to the hilt, but it helps that John and Marlena were also worth rooting for.

I think both Austin and John were severely dumbed down to try to make it work, although I am not sure how smart Austin was to begin with lol.

I think Drake/John sold the dimness better because you could see where he was coming from.  He thought he ruined Marlena's family and was trying to move on from her, he and Marlena had a great friendship that he didn't want to ruin, generally thought the best about people, and was probably lying to himself as much as Kristen was lying to him. And while John/Marlena/Kristen/Stefano hit the right amount of pacing (a lot due to Marlena being kidnapped to drag it out), I think Austin/Sami/Carrie lasted too long.

Austin's belief that Sami wasn't lying THIS time and that he had to do everything because Will was his son was just weirdly outdated.  By the time Sami was exposed a lot of the audience had moved on the Carrie/Mike.

I can easily see how it failed on Passions when he was already teetering on the edge on Days near the end of his run.  He wasn't going to have the audience backing he had on Days with legacy characters.

May 2002

Buys of our lives

You're watching Days of Our Lives one afternoon, and you say to yourself, "That Phillip is certainly a hunk, and his computer is kinda sexy, too. I wish I had one just like it." Well, now you can. Starting this summer, fans of NBC's Days and Passions can purchase computers, apparel, jewelry and other products through ShopNBC, the home -shopping network 40% owned by NBC and parent GE. The products will be written into the soaps, then, starting in mid July, sold every other Saturday afternoon on ShopNBC's Soap Style. The show will feature interviews with soap stars, behind- the -scenes footage, bloopers, previews, trivia and contests. Wait! There's more! Viewers will also be able to purchase the items at ShopNBC.com and NBC.com

I'd never heard of this. I guess it didn't take off. Does anyone know more? How long was ShopNBC around?

It looks like the company was around until last week under the name ShopHQ lol.  If I am reading it right it was under the QVC, HSN umbrella.

ShopNbc existed until 2009.  I don't know how long the buy "Belle's eyeliner" phase lasted, but I do vaguely remember this.

There are a few links to the Days-specific portion of the site on Internet Archive.

Here is another link from 2003. The Passions store had a few unique items, such as a MarTimmy glass, but Days doesn't seem to have tried to personalize it in any way. Most show merchandise falls in between. Mostly T-shirts, few really interesting things.

Doing this in 2002 was too early - no social media yet - and the market was quite saturated with everyone and their brother trying to set up online stores, or be an online marketplace dealing in everything.

It's very 2002. You can buy the first series of Friends on DVD for $60, or on VHS for $45. You could buy online, or order by phone.

    • The Dallas finale was the highest-rated episode since October 9, 1987 (Gone with the Wind). Prior to the finale, the last Dallas episode to finish ahead of a new episode of Murder, She Wrote was October 23, 1987 (Tough Love). Prior to the finale, the last Dallas episode to finish ahead of a new episode of The Cosby Show was February 22, 1985 (Shattered Dreams).
    • 40 years ago this month, the best and most pivotal television season of the 1980s came to an end. Here’s how the rookie breakout and the four soaps wrapped up the season. The Cosby Show – Cliff’s Birthday (season 1 finale, May 9): Clair and the children surprise Cliff by planning a birthday celebration around a Lena Horne concert. Dallas – Deliverance (May 10): Bobby seeks evidence to free Jenna. The Ewings go confidently to court. Mitch asks Lucy to move in. J.R. wants Sue Ellen hospitalized. Dynasty - The Heiress (May 8): Krystle learns Daniel is dead. King Galen courts Alexis. Amanda sees Michael with Elena. Sammy Jo learns Krystle will handle her money and is furious about the decision. Knots Landing – One Day in a Row (May 9): Ben aids in Karen's search for Val's babies. Mack replies to the governor's offer. Ruth uses Abby to break up Laura and Greg. Falcon Crest – Cold Comfort (May 10): Fugitive Lance desperately searches for Lorraine, who lies comatose in a San Francisco hospital. Robin returns with startling news.   Dallas – Swan Song (season 8 finale, May 17): Jenna's release from jail depresses Pam. Sue Ellen thinks she saw Dusty. Donna tells Ray about her pregnancy. Cliff consults an attorney about an annulment. Lucy and Mitch remarry. Sudden tragedy strikes Bobby. Dynasty – Royal Wedding (season 5 finale, May 15): Sammy Jo makes her roommate look like Krystle. Elena reassures Amanda about her upcoming marriage. Terrorists come for the royal wedding of Prince Michael and Amanda. Falcon Crest – Confessions (May 17): Melissa confesses to framing Lance. Pamela gives Maggie proof that Richard bribed Judge Holder. Connie reveals her love for Chase. Knots Landing – Vulnerable (May 16): Ruth wants Abby to break up Greg and Laura. Karen makes a breakthrough in her hunt for Val's babies. Joshua hampers Val's recovery. Knots Landing – The Long and Winding Road (season 6 finale, May 23): Abby fears being linked to the disappearance of Val's babies. Laura leaves Greg. The Fishers are determined to keep Val's babies. Falcon Crest – The Avenging Angel (season 4 finale, May 24): Lorraine dies. Angela throws a victory party. Cassandra's mother arrives. An explosion rips through Richard's house. 1984/85 was the season the primetime soaps pulled out all the stops to out-do each other and everything culminated in the spring. May 1985 was the zenith of primetime soaps as a genre.

    • Charles Grant first appeared as Evan in September 1988. I was surprised to come across this item from December 1985, almost 3 years earlier: "Lots of action behind the scenes at Another World . . . I have bad news for fans of Christopher Holder (Peter Love). He will be leaving the show in the new year. I have heard that the producers are recasting the part and are also seeing actors for new roles. One of the main characters this spring will be Marlee [sic] and Victoria's father. The producers have been talking to Charles Flohe (John "Preacher" Emerson, Edge Of Night) about another new character to be featured. I will fill you in on the results as soon as I know." It seems obviously too early for anyone to have been planning to introduce Evan Frame. Based on the context he's not being considered as a recast of Peter. Maybe they were considering him for the character that turned out to be Neal, who started around the same time as Marcus Smythe as Peter?

    • That was my point really. These anniversary party scenes are the first ones, and now they won't be able to use them (meaning these actual scenes, as aired, with OG Ted). They can recreate them but I doubt they will spring for all the extras to come back and film and recreate everything, so it will be more like tight closed in shots of Ted with one or two other actors, or snippets of Leslie's original speech where Ted wasn't visible. It would be hard to recapture the original energy of the scenes are as they were filmed in their full context. I just think that's too bad, but maybe they will prove me wrong. I never really saw what was so off in his portrayal to warrant a recast, anyway, so that colors my perception as well.
    • Yeah, and quite honestly, are there really that many scenes that are flashback-worthy at this point in the run?
