I've known some older people who become much angrier as they age, for various reasons (it's also what leads to radicalization in some older people), and which soaps rarely delved into. I can see why they did want to focus more on the kinder side of Alice, as Frances played this well and it was a tonic for viewers with all the upheaval on the rest of the canvas starting in the late '70s. Still, I hope we get to see more of this type of material for her in more '60s or '70s episodes that pop up.

I would love a character that is older and based off someone like Jane Fonda or Joan Baez. Someone who is still out there getting arrested for what they believe in. Even if people do or don't agree with her politics or idealogies, the Jane Fonda's of the world are fascinating to me.

However I also loved having Grandma Alice on my tv too and I think there is a place for both types of people. Even in the 80's Alice was still mixing it up here and there.

Another factor that I think played a part in this is the fact that soaps doesn't really seem to do a lot of storylines based in generational conflicts anymore, which seemed to be the bread and butter of the 60s/70s. Maybe it's because of what someone said - the conflict between boomers and the generation before it was so big because of the differences in growing up while the following generations have mostly gone on to having more wealth and comfort. So the same conflict just doesn't exist in the same way it did in the 60s when it was literally ingrained in Alice's personality as opposed to some on-going storyline that was set to be resolved at one point.

That's very true. It's also down to soaps losing interest in generational dynamics or writing age-appropriate material. That's how you end up with Belle and Marlena, mother and daughter, being written and performed in a way that would at times make you think there is not much difference between them.

Let's face it, Alice probably gave up after the traumas her  kids went through. Her parenting approach was obviously not working. Brother impregnating brother's wife, shootings, breakdowns, amnesia, illegitimate children etc

She decided with the grandkids, she'd just ride the wave and provide the donuts!

It's definitely surprising when you read some of the old recaps and hear how Alice got sometimes. Blaming Mike for Mickey's heart attack and trying to get him banned from visiting Mickey in the hospital, kicking Tom out of their bedroom after Mickey's breakdown, basically cutting Julie out of her life for a while because she thought Doug and Julie had an affair behind Addie's back.

It did all seem to come from a place of love though, and that stubborn determination to protect her children at all costs.

Lisa Trusel and David Wallace interviewed with Darby Hinton (who played Ian Griffith, Melissa's parole officer and the hospital rapist, on Days).  Some 80s flashbacks included in this one.

Late to the discussion on Alice and how generation differences are written and portrayed and I'd like to say that anyone in modern TV who doesn't want to touch this stuff is a fool. It's so relatable, whether you only approach it with one-two shades ("Oh, Grandma's so old-fashioned, isn't that hilarious/overbearing?") or a whole bunch ("Oh, Grandma has some regrets about how things went down in her day, or just can't quite feel like a part of today's world, and I don't quite have the skill or patience to get her there, which frustrates me, so I'm going to get mad easily.")

Thank you for finding these interviews. It's a shame they don't ever bring Melissa back now. Not that I'd necessarily want to see how it would go but I'd think Ron Carlivati would find the histories of Mary, Linda, and Brooke to be catnip, and Melissa is tied to all of those.

It would have been great to keep Melissa around, just as a recurring player to be a friend to Hope and daughter/grandaughter  and maybe have some mini stories along the way, to keep the sense of family and history alive.

I'm sure Lisa would have been happy to work once in a while.

In my ideal soap world, the Hortos would be more prominent but there would also be references and appearances from family members not front burner.I'm sure many actors would be happy to keep appearing.

That would set up the next generations.

If we had have seen Melissa and others throughout the years, then any children she had would have been known to the audience and accepted, rather than pop up children we'd never heard about.

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
