According to the book, Rita noticed that her appearances on the show during her first stint were growing fewer and farther between. Apparently, the writers at the time didn't know what to do with Carol. She stopped watching the show after being let go, because it was too painful. However, Rita's mom continued to watch and noticed that Carol's name was being mentioned a lot. This was after Irna Phillips had returned to ATWT. Rita then got a call from the show, stating that they were indeed bringing Carol back and wanted her to reprise the role. She did and stayed for nearly a decade. Then she retired from show biz to raise a family and help her minister husband in his church work. Today, Rita and Norm are still married after over 40 years, have three grown kids and several grandchildren. They live in New Jersey, where Norm is the senior pastor of a Baptist Church.

Thanks for the reply. Obviously the writers who replaced Irna had no interest in Carol.Tom got involved with Meredith the heiress and then they seemed to be moving towards Tom and Barbara Ryan (Donna Wandrey). Would love to see synopses of that time to see how that all played out.

Oh my Lord- thank you for posting that!!  It's so frustrating trying to piece together what happens in-between the available episodes on YouTube. Although I have the 40th anniversary book with a detailed synopses, there's no particular order to each year in it. Weekly synopses from SOD will be a GIANT help in me keeping track as I go through the show!!!

So Rita was off ATWT late 69? Maybe she was recurring at that time so free to audition for AMC? Did she mention in the book anything about the first time she was dropped and the circumstances of her return?

I thought when Irna came back in Jan 72 she brought Carol back and had Tom wed Carol by June of that year.

Unless I am having a senior moment, LOL, I think she only began working on ATWT in 1970, so she could have auditioned for AMC and ATWT the same year.

Well, she mentioned that she had already been on ATWT for a few months before AMC was mentioned. So, she must have started on ATWT earlier than 1970. Dates weren't mentioned.

I checked various soap-history books and they do list her debut year on ATWT as 1970. Maybe she auditioned for both soaps around the same time, got hired quickly by ATWT, and then only heard back from AMC again after she had already been cast as Carol? I guess it's impossible to verify if no dates are mentioned in her book.

Yes!! I've just started at 1985 and I'm mid-way through 1986 now, so this will be super helpful!

Yes, I looked online and most sources have Rita starting May 1970, but as we have found with The Doctors reruns, dates can be off.

I believe Irna left in early 1970 as she was working on A World Apart. She was listed as headwriter on a Jan 30 script posted online.

Pretty sure Carol was her creation as it seems odd she would bring her back in 72 if she hadnt created the character.

So most likely Rita/Carol began mid 1969. That would fit in with her auditioning for AMC Nov/Dec of that year.

That sounds accurate.

Interesting perspective from TW. I think I remember about him writing. Ironic he at one point is talking about Diego /Umberto, and the murder is later (badly) pinned on him.

Kinda weird that he's also talking about the Snyders being pushed out in part because they were so closely identified with Marland.
