Daytime drama gives songwriter a boost

The scene was a "Cinderella Fantasy" contest, taking place on the popular daytime drama "As the World Turns." In the story, pop stars Jermaine Jackson and Whitney Houston were singing a beautiful ballad especially for the lucky winner, the guest of honor at their concert. - The stuff that fictional dreams are made -of but in real life it was a dream come true for one member of the concert audience, songwriter James Patrick Dunne, who was hearing his song, "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do," sung by one of the renowned Jacksons. and about to become a hit record almost before his eyes.

It all began when the Kentucky-born Dunne made his way to Hollywood with dreams of being a songwriter. Finding the climate difficult for a newcomer, he found work instead at Paramount, composing original music " for the hit comedy series "Happy Days." When the spin-off series "Joanie Loves Chachi" was conceived, Dunne was called on to write material for the two young leads to perform on the series. "I think between the two shows," Dunne recalls, "I wrote 40 original songs. I was super-lucky to wind up working there." But the luckiest thing about Dunne's time at Paramount was meeting Millee Taggart, now principal writer (with Tom King) of "As the World Turns."

Dunne and Miss Taggart worked together writing "Joanie Loves Chachi," and when the shortlived series came to an end. Miss Taggart returned to New York to begin work for "As the World Turns," bringing with her a tape of Dunne's songs. Executive producer Mary-Ellis Bunim took the tape with her to Greece when "As the World Turns" taped there earlier this year, and decided that Dunne's music could be used to highlight a very special upcoming event the wedding in June of long-time lovers Steve and Betsy on the serial. Dunne joined series regular Tonya Pinkins (who plays Heather Dalton) to sing "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" during the touching ceremony, and requests from viewers for copies of the song have been arriving ever since. , "The ironic thing about that," reports Dunne, "is that I originally wrote that song (with lyricist Pamela Phillips) for the wedding of a friend of mine. Bill Allen (Steve Allen's son). So, Steve and Betsy's was actually the second wedding I'd sung it for. "Meanwhile, record producer Clive Davis had heard a tape of my songs. He suggested the song to Jermaine Jackson and Whitney Houston as a possible duet to record, and he suggested they premier it on 'As the World Turns." The chance of exposing their recording to the serial's giant audience was one of the main reasons for Jackson's appearance." The superstar's guest appearance was Aug. 1 and 2, and he and Miss Houston performed the song to an appreciative audience that included James Patrick Dunne.

When Tonya Pinkins appeared on that reunion livestream, this was barely mentioned. Perhaps she might not have known the creative process of the son, or its full production history, but a host who had done a modicum of research could have expanded the discussion of this topic.
Such a missed opportunity.

I loved Jessica and Duncan. She grounded him and he opened up her world. And then of course, their being one of Daytime's first interracial marriages was an important milestone as well. Kudos to Doug Marland for seeing their potential and exploring such social themes.

I don't see it reported on this board yet, but I just heard that Marnie Schulenburg (Alison) has passed.

https://www.soapoperadigest.com/content/as-the-world-turns-alum-passes-away-at-37/

She shared her story in 2020 about battling stage 4 breast cancer.

Marnie arrived at a time when the show was going downhill fast, but I always thought she brought some light in those years. She is way too young to have passed. I'm very saddened by this news.

It's been a tough year for ATWT fans. Losing so many of our greats.

Agim Kaba (Aaron) posted a brief tribute on Twitter:

Oh, that's sad. I found her pretty poor and horribly miscast on ATWT, but I have to blame the writing - because when she turned up on OLTL 2.0 as a very different character she was a firecracker, and a lot of fun. RIP.

    • The thing with Martin (for me) is that he should have been Anita and Vernon's kid. I honestly think he would have been fine being an older or younger brother to Dani and Nicole. It also would have made his relationship and kids feel more realistic. A handsome salt and pepper late 40s/early 50s congressman who settled down and adopted kids to fit an image for politics. Not that he didn't want this lifestyle but it is what he needed to do to get ahead. Also, we don't often get older characters playing LGBT roles not just on daytime but across most media. It would have been a refreshing take. As an alternative, Sam and Ty could have been Martin's kids from an earlier marriage a la the NJ governor that was outed. We could have also seen parallels between Vernon and Anita thinking back to how they handled Martin coming out compared to the way they accepted Chelsea.  As for Martin being Nicole and Ted's kid, I do wish in this case he was not tied to a marriage and kids, so that he could date and sleep around like any other character on a soap.  Yeah, I didn't get it...but what I did get is that girl is a bit crazy like her mama.  Vanessa and Joey talking about the poker table...get these people off my screen.

    • Unpopular opinion, but I didn't think the show should have reunited Billy/Vanessa at all until the final stretch of the show. When watching the 1989 episodes when both Vanessa and Billy return after being off the show... I liked that Vanessa had moved on from him and that the show was hinting at her wanting to reunite with her first love Ross while looking down at Nadine for being the one Ross was dating.  And I loved the twist where Billy and Nadine teamed up to keep Vanessa/Ross apart.   This was an interesting concept that sadly the writers dropped with the show deciding to make Vanessa pine over Billy between 1990 and 1993 when they finally reunited.   To me, Vanessa pining over Billy seemed out of character. At least once Billy was carted off to prison in 1994... she and Billy divorced and stayed divorced until the final months when they finally found their way back together.  During the years when they were divorced, I liked that they had maintained a friendship and connection.. with viewers (like my late mom) wondering if they would ever decide to make it work again. I wish the show had tried that with Josh/Reva because by the time of the final episode when they rode off into the sunset, I didn't care because we'd been through the make up and break ups between them for over 10+ years by that point.
    • I break down the primetime soap era (start of Dallas to end of Knots Landing) as  Up to Spring 1982: Building the foundation. Fall 1982-Spring 1985: Peak. Fall 1985-Spring 1988: Tanking. Fall 1988 onward: Off the rails plus budget mode. Of course individual shows vary and I've broken down each show in their threads.
    • I’m ready for Portia and Curtis to divorce and get it over with. Portia cheating with Isaiah would make for a fun love quadrangle with Jordan.

    • They didn't need to have some slutty gay dude as their representation. Just a 'normal' guy getting involved with another guy or two (or three). Just like the straight characters. Thinking about it, they missed the boat by not having a few other single charcters at the beginning. Maybe Naomi or Ashley could be shown meeting Derek/Jacob and  we could follow their romance. Too many characters were coupled up at the start. As a tattoo hater I was surprised to see Tomas so inked. Don't find it attractive or sexy. I'm surprised an actor would do that as it's definitely a statement and may not be appropriate for some roles. Suppose they can cover if necessary. I didn't buy Kat being all girly and then paying off Darius to get into Eva's room. Way too cliche. She should have just come along when the housekeeping was leaving and breezed in saying it was her room. And her smug looks in the hotel room and 'Now I've got you!!' talks to herself at Orphey Gene's...no.
    • Omg I was so annoyed. Like girl calm down. Coming on way too strong. Omg I forgot about this
